Communication in an unequal relationship (lecturer – student) is conditioned by an officialcommunicative situation. The interchange of information in such a communicative space (situation, place and time) requires the sender and the addressee of a message to use a definite code and to observe, among others, the rules of linguistic etiquette and verbal aesthetics. In unequal relationships, it is the lecturers who in their e-mails observe the rules of linguistic etiquette and aesthetics. Students, in turn, not always can adjust their utterances to a communicative situation and consequently their linguistic behaviours are considered as unsuitable and inadequate with regard to the addressee, the situation and the act of communication. A characteristic feature of students’ letters is the use of linguistic strategies characteristic for the spoken Polish (language) in unofficial situations, and also combining the norms of linguistic polite behaviours typical for an unequal relationship as well as equal relationship.

The article is an attempt at analyzing — from both theoretical and empirical perspectives — the email as a nowadays particularly popular form of communication, as well as at exploring the options to use it in foreign language classes. The study is based on the e-mail correspondence generated within the framework of a pilot study focused on creative writing skills in German-Polish Internet tandems.

Corpus analyses conducted with the help of special tools have become more widely used in all areas of linguistics, including discourse analysis, genre analysis and pragmatics. The paper presents a pragmalinguistic research study of verbs, carried out on a specialized corpus of authentic correspondence of (chains of) Slovene business e-mails, Posle-pis. The corpus tools Oxford Wordsmith Tools 5.0 and Sketch Engine were used for analysis, and the research was followed by a comparison of language use with two Slovene reference corpora FidaPLUS and Gigafida. The study confirms the hypothesis that business discourse via e-mail has inherent characteristics that are shown through the frequency of use of certain verbs and verb forms. Certain forms were also identified which prove the conventionalized language use of business e-mail discourse.

The aim of the article has been to bring attention to the instability of the Polish pattern of electronic correspondence by using a distinct comparative background, i.e., the practice of teaching the Polish language to foreigners outside the territory of Poland (in this particular case – the Italians). The efficiency of the modern didactic methods in combination with a high degree of conventionality of the rules of language etiquette are conducive for a quick mastery of correct (expected) linguistic behaviours by the students of the Polish language learning it outside Poland. It turns out, however, that in the Internet reality, the standards of linguistic politeness – generally accepted by a given language community – undergo negative reevaluation due to which the native users of both the Polish language as well as other languages, encounter problems with a dynamic and chaotically changing formula of contacting by means of e-mail.

In the commented judgment, the Supreme Administrative Court (hereinafter: the Supreme Administrative Court) made a significant confirmation of the effectiveness of sending applications by electronic means (ordinary e-mail) to entities obliged under the provisions of the Act on Access to Public Information, even when such an application (e-mail) does not go directly to the mailbox address or to the e-mail address of a specific person indicated as competent to accept them on behalf of the obligated party, but to spam, or other various defined folders in the IT system used by the obligated party. The author emphasizes the legitimacy of not only the ruling of the Supreme Administrative Court, but also its substantive justification.

Celem prowadzonych badań była wstępna empiryczna weryfikacja hipotetycznych związków pomiędzy zaangażowaniem w pracę a charakterystykami komunikacji mailowej. Wykazano, iż postrzeganie maila jako zasobu (ß = 0,36) wyjaśnia ok. 13% zmienności w zakresie zaangażowania w pracę. Poczucie przeciążenia mailami nie wykazało związku z zaangażowaniem w pracę. Wzajemne oddziaływanie zaangażowania (ß = 0,44) i poczucia przeciążenia mailami (ß = 0,41) pozwalało przewidywać ok. 36% zmienności w zakresie dostępności do maila poza pracą.

The paper introduces the results of research on contact formulas in contemporary correspondence in Czech. The motivation for the research was the authors’ language consulting practice and it resulted in the major research question of whether the greeting Dobrý den (‘Hello’) is suitable at the beginning of formal correspondence and what is the relationship between this contact formula and the addressing composed of the attribute Vážený (‘Dear’) and the nominal expression. There were two phases of the research: the first consisted of semi-structured interviews with eight participants. The findings of this phase were used for the preparation of the questionnaire, which was the second phase of the research. The information obtained shows contemporary usage and perception of contact formulas in the frame of the representative sample of 367 respondents. The findings show that although there is a noticeable shift in the perception of contact formulas starting with the greeting Dobrý den, the more formal the communication situation, the more frequently the formula starts with the attribute Vážený. The greeting is often used in cases when the partners in communication are on an equal level, or when the writer is in the superior position, and it is ordinarily used in communication with an unknown addressee.
