The article presents a philosophical conceptualization of multilingualism. Philosophy’s general task is to subject human experience to reflective scrutiny and the experience of present day society has changed drastically. Multilingualism, as the vehicle of a new linguistic dispensation, plays a central role in it. We apply the metaphor ‘edge’ to explore the way multiple languages are deployed in, and intensively shape, the postmodern world. We also demonstrate how multilingualism is an edge, not only metaphorically, but involving true and real boundaries of various kinds, and all of them are essential for its nature.

Are emotions internal episodes – psychical or neurological – as is often claimed? Some certainly are; but I maintain that an important class of emotions are “peripheral”; by this I mean that they consist in what we pick up from others’ expressions of their emotions in words, gestures, or actions – or from surrounding circumstances of various sorts. These expressions and circumstances contain affect clusters that manifest themselves to us exophanously, literally “showings-forth.” I explore both of these basic situations of “the transmission of affect” (Brennan). I also present an abbreviated periphenomenological description of various ways in which emotions have their own peculiar edges, thereby correcting and supplementing the common conception that edges inhere only in physical objects.

Obszary krawędziowe poprzemysłowych zespołów urbanistycznych są obszarami zlokalizowanymi w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie kompleksów postindustrialnych rozumianych jako zbiór obiektów poprzemysłowych służących dawniej procesom produkcji lub wydobycia wraz z towarzyszącą im niezbędną infrastrukturą przestrzenną. Zespoły postindustrialne w fazie upadku i odłogowania negatywnie oddziałują na otaczającą je tkankę urbanistyczną, generując nawarstwiające się problemy na płaszczyźnie przestrzennej, społecznej i ekonomicznej. Artykuł podejmuje próbę zdefiniowania kryteriów delimitacji tego typu terenów, uwzględniając wymienione aspekty. Poprawna diagnoza stanu istniejącego oraz wyznaczenie granic obszarów krawędziowych może stać się podstawą opracowania strategii ich przekształceń

Brownfields border areas are areas located in the immediate vicinity of the post-industrial complexes defining as a group of post-industrial buildings formerly used for production and exploitation processes with all the necessary space infrastructures. Post-industrial complexes in the phase of decline and abandonment have a negative influence on border areas causing increasing spatial, social and economic problems. Article tries to define the criteria for the delimitation of these types of spaces taking into consider these aspects. The correct diagnosis of the existing situation and the delimitation of the brownfields border areas may become the basis for developing strategies for their transformations.

A wall, an inner wall, a fence: elements that are between the inside and the outside, often seen on plans as linear elements with a protective force, are nevertheless zones that crown and frame the work, i.e. the designed space. Properly designed, with a tangible thickness, they can stratify and become on their own spaces of recesses, niches, hollows and even corridors or passages. Solid, thick and heavy or, on the contrary, light, openwork and filled with air, they frame the interiors of buildings and the urban space. They operate bi-directionally, although they belong to a single object. They speak of the interiority and exteriority of an architectural object at the same time. On a plan and in a large scale they are perceived as boundaries, barriers, but in closer perspective and deeper understanding they can become soft edges enclosing the delicate matter of a building or a part of a city. The article deals with the theme of edges and verges in the context of the architecture of buildings and the city, the issues of the framework of parts of urban space. In relation to both buildings and city districts, they appear to be important spatial elements, yet which are often treated with insufficient attention. The article considers several examples of urban frameworks to illustrate their role in creating places.

Mur, ściana, ogrodzenie – elementy będące pomiędzy wnętrzem i zewnętrzem, często postrzegane na planach jako liniowe elementy o sile ochrony, są jednak strefami zwieńczającymi i obramowującymi dzieło, jakim jest zaprojektowana przestrzeń. Odpowiednio zaprojektowane, o namacalnej miąższości, mogą rozwarstwiać się i stawać same w sobie przestrzenią wnęk, nisz, zagłębień, a nawet korytarzy i przejść. Solidne, grube i ciężkie lub też wręcz przeciwnie – lekkie, ażurowe, wypełnione powietrzem ujmują w ramy wnętrza budynków i miejską przestrzeń. Działają dwukierunkowo, choć przynależą do jednego obiektu. Mówią jednocześnie o wewnętrzności i zewnętrzności obiektu architektonicznego. Na planie i w wielkiej skali odbierane jako granice, bariery, po bliższym przyjrzeniu się i zrozumieniu – mogą stać się miękkimi obrzeżami stanowiącymi obszycie delikatnej materii budynku lub fragmentu miasta. Artykuł podejmuje temat krawędzi i skrajów w kontekście architektury budynków i miasta, zagadnień ram fragmentów miejskiej przestrzeni. Zarówno w odniesieniu do budynków, jak i rejonów miasta wydają się istotnymi elementami przestrzennymi, a często traktowane są niedostatecznie uważnie. W artykule rozpatrzono kilka przykładów miejskich ram, by zilustrować ich rolę w kreowaniu miejsc.

Women in the plays of Marina Carr have always been on the edge of something. The Mai suffers from the loss of selfhood and tries to escape the limitations imposed by her family, Portia fights for her right to be a mother who does not love her children, Hester cannot live outside the geographical limits of the bog that is killing her and Catherine will struggle to live in a dream. The edge in Marina Carr’s theatre is a space that can be defined as a space of the mind, a space of resistance that her characters fight to inhabit. Edges constitute marginalized sites where women find a space of their own. In her latest plays the concept of the edge has been transferred to modern life and mythological rural landscapes have receded. Spaces of urban tension and conflict create edges that are now more visible on the stage through the dramatic space, and transformations occur in the form of provocative dialogues and behaviors that hint at a reinvented edge where women continue to search for their own spaces.

Pojęcie krawędzi w sztukach Mariny Carr Kobiety w sztukach Mariny Carr zawsze są na krawędzi. Mai cierpi z powodu braku indywidualności i próbuje odrzucić ograniczenia narzucone przez rodzinę, Portia walczy o prawo do bycia matką która nie kocha swoich dzieci, Hester nie potrafi żyć poza trzęsawiskiem, które ją zabija, a Catherine próbuje żyć we śnie. Krawędź w sztukach Mariny Carr można zdefiniować jako przestrzeń umysłu, przestrzeń oporu w której bohaterki próbują zamieszkać. Krawędź oznacza margines na którym kobiety odnajdują własną przestrzeń. W późniejszych sztukach Mariny Carr mitologiczne, wiejskie krajobrazy ustępują miejsca współczesności. Przestrzenie miejskich napięć i konfliktów tworzą krawędzie, które są bardziej widoczne w przestrzeni dramatu, a transformacje dokonują się poprzez prowokacyjne dialogi i zachowania, wskazujące na nowe pojęcie krawędzi na której kobiety nadal poszukują swojego miejsca.
