Children’s Magazines as Tools for (Not Only) Reading Education

Głównym celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, w jaki sposób czasopisma dla dzieci mogą być narzędziem edukacji medialnej, rozumianej jako wychowanie do odbioru środków przekazu, ale również jako budowanie nawyku czytelnictwa prasy i książek. Hipoteza: W literaturze przedmiotu powszechnie przyjmuje się, że prasa dla dzieci może być efektywnym narzędziem budowania nawyku czytelnictwa. Jednak ten segment rynku prasowego, podobnie jak pozostałe, musi zmagać się z tendencjami do spadku czytelnictwa prasy i książki w zderzeniu z ekspansją mediów cyfrowych. Metodologia: Autor analizuje dane zastane (m.in. raporty z badań) oraz opracowania naukowe z zakresu wpływu mediów, pedagogiki, edukacji medialnej oraz psychologii mediów. Artykuł ma charakter teoretyczny. Jest osadzony w dyscyplinie „nauki o komunikacji społecznej i mediach”, ale ma charakter interdyscyplinarny z uwagi na odniesienia do pedagogiki, edukacji i zagadnień technologicznych.

The main aim of the article is to answer the question of how children’s magazines may be used as tools for media education understood as educating children on how to process media, and also as instilling the habit of reading periodicals and books. Hypothesis: It is generally assumed in the scholarly literature that periodicals for children may be an effective tool in encouraging a reading habit. Unfortunately, this segment of the press market, just as all other segments, faces declining readership due to the expansion of the digital media. Methodology: An analysis the existing data (e.g. study reports) and academic analyses in terms of the impact of the media, pedagogy, media education, and media psychology. The article is theoretical in nature. It stems from the discipline of the “science of social communication and the media”, yet it offers an interdisciplinary approach, due to its references to pedagogy, education, and technology.

This article outlines the changes taking place in modern libraries. Libraries are presented as up-to-date places, centres of culture, care and upbringing. The article discusses the value of creative, communicative and empathic librarians and describes the dedication, innovation, training and ingenuity that librarians should have in order to engage society in cultural life. The article indicates the level of commitment librarians demonstrate in spreading literary education among the youngest, so that it could bring benefits in the future.

Praca opisuje zmiany, jakie występują we współczesnych bibliotekach. Biblioteka przedstawiona jest jako współczesne miejsce, centrum kultury, opieki i wychowania. Ukazuje, jak ogromną wartość ma kreatywny, komunikatywny oraz empatyczny bibliotekarz. Jak wiele poświęcenia, innowacji, dokształcania, pracy własnej oraz pomysłowości powinni mieć bibliotekarze, aby zaangażować społeczeństwo w życie kulturalne. Jak wiele zaangażowania wykazują w szerzeniu edukacji czytelniczej wśród najmłodszych, tak aby przyniosła korzyści w przyszłości.

Abstract The paper presents the theoretical findings regarding children's critical reading skills. The articlecle also presents the Four Resources Model (Peter Freebody, Allan Luke) as a proposal to work with the text as part of critical literacy. Referring to the results of international research on progress in reading PIRLS, it reveals dilemmas related to the teaching of critical reading of the youngest recipients of literary content. Material and methods The article uses the analysis of documents concerning the level of reading skills, learning critical reading and the four resources model four resources Results The text presents the results of international PIRLS 2016 reading progress research and the theoretical findings regarding the critical reading model by Freebody and Luke. Conclusions Today's education can not ignore the critical literacy of children who are recipients of not only verbal but also (and perhaps above all) visual content

Streszczenie Artykuł prezentuje teoretyczne ustalenia dotyczące dziecięcej umiejętności krytycznego czytania. Przedstawia Four Resources Model (Peter Freebody, Allan Luke) jako propozycję do pracy z tekstem w ramach krytycznej alfabetyzacji. Nawiązując do wyników międzynarodowych badań postępów w czytaniu PIRLS, ukazuje dylematy związane z uczeniem krytycznego czytania najmłodszych odbiorców treści literackich. Materiał i metody W pracy wykorzystano analizę dokumentów dotyczących poziomu umiejętności czytania, nauki krytycznego czytania oraz modelu czterech zasobów Wyniki Tekst prezentuje wyniki międzynarodowych badań postępów czytelniczych PIRLS 2016 oraz teoretyczne ustalenia dotyczące modelu krytycznego czytania autorstwa Freebody i Luke. Wnioski Współczesna edukacja nie może pominąć krytycznej alfabetyzacji dzieci, które są odbiorcami nie tylko słownych, ale także (a może przede wszystkim) wizualnych treści.

The article is devoted to bibliotherapy as a method of promoting reading and having therapeutic value. It consists of two parts. The first part is a theoretical introduction, which defines the basic concepts for the content of the article, presents a model of bibliotherapeutic procedure and the assumptions of reading classes bibliotherapy elements. The second part is an overview of bibliotherapeutic activities in various areas in the pedagogical library, it is a form of good practice examples. Considerations on the subject of bibliotherapy classes allowed for the formulation of basic research conclusions.

Artykuł poświęcono biblioterapii jako metodzie terapeutycznej promującej czytelnictwo. Tekst składa się z dwóch części. Pierwsza z nich to wprowadzenie teoretyczne, w którym zdefiniowano podstawowe dla treści artykułu pojęcia, przedstawiono model postępowania biblioterapeutycznego oraz założenia zajęć czytelniczych z elementami biblioterapii. Druga część stanowi omówienie działalności biblioterapeutycznej w różnych obszarach w bibliotece pedagogicznej jako przykładów dobrej praktyki. Rozważania na temat zajęć biblioterapeutycznych pozwoliły na sformułowanie podstawowych wniosków badawczych.

The presented publication is a critical edition of the article by the poet and pedagogue Józef Czechowicz (1903 – 1939) entitled Liryka i młodzi (Poetry and the young) published in the third issue of the „Ogniwo” (“Link”) journal from 1933. This article was not included in the volumes with journalistic writings by Czechowicz. However, it deserves interest partially due to its always current contents. The author’s view on the necessity to adjust the programme of literary education and the book collections of public and school libraries to the reading interests of the youth should be shared by teachers and librarians at contemporary times similarly to the times when Czechowicz published his statement.
