The frequency of anxiety and mood disorders is appr. 17% in the population all over the world leading to huge costs in mental health care. Effective prevention and treatment of depression was set up as a priority by the WHO. According to efficacy investigations in the field of clinical psychology, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) proved to be very effective in the treatment and relapse prevention of these mental disorders. On behalf of the British government Lord Layard health care economist developed a program called “improved access to psychotherapies (IAPT)” to improve the treatment of the most frequent mental disorders and decrease national health care costs. The Layard program emphasizes the adaptation of cost effective CBT in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression as well as better access to them. In order to achieve this goal 5000 psychologists and psychotherapists were trained in CBT as well as 200 community based mental health centers were set up in the United Kingdom. Introduction of the Layard model in Hungary could be very effective in the resolution of mental health care problems.
