The aim of this article is to analyse the scope of formal and dynamic equivalence in three press releases published by the European Commission in April 2020. The discussed press releases refer to the issue of the coronavirus pandemic and various measures taken by the Commission as a response to the crisis caused by the pandemic. Simultaneously, a particular attention is placed on the influence of the above-mentioned types of equivalence on the message covered by the press releases. Moreover, the study is based on three languages English, German and Polish. As the research shows, the two types of equivalence may apply to various aspects of texts introducing a wide range of effects to the translation. Whereas formal equivalence is usually present in shorter forms, dynamic equivalence corresponds to larger units of text. Additionally, it has been proved that the two types of equivalence are not applied in both translations to an equal extent.
The paper zooms in on the problem of equivalence with regard to translating philosophical texts which have so far been marginalized in translation theory. Drawing on Nida’s equivalence theory, the author of this paper prioritizes formal equivalence over dynamic one, basing this approach on the specific nature of philosophical discourse. To this end, pertinent extracts from David Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature with a special focus on philosophical terminology have been compared with their published Slovak, Czech and German translations. The paper provides an account of how and why the form is bound up with the meaning in the ambit of philosophy. The comparative analysis suggests that the form and function of philosophical discourse is connected to such a degree that the form even constitutes a part of the text’s function.

This article outlines two types of translations of the Bible, i.e. the traditional one (philological) and the modern one (communicative). It also outlines their characteristics and possible uses. It should be pointed out that the analysis of the translations does not aim at determining which version is better. Firstly, the article presents the theory of translations and outlines their different types. It then presents factors which need to be considered during the translation process. Translations of the Bible differ with regards to solving problems which concern relationships not only between the content and the form but also the cultural differences. This was shown in two translations of the Bible: the Luther Bible and Gute Nachricht Bibel. These two versions differ as there are different reasons underlying the process of translation, e.g. having the target reader in mind. It can be claimed that the Luther’s revised translation with the commentary (Erklärungsbibel) requires more effort from the reader as it is a more difficult biblical text with elaborate commentaries. However, it allows the reader to focus on the content more. The communicative translation in Gute Nachricht Bibel is more accessible, and thus it required simplification of the content. Its target readers are “elementary” readers of the Bible. The fact that there exist different types of translations of the Bible should be appreciated as this allows people who do not know the biblical language, Hebrew (and Aramaic) or Greek, to learn and better understand what the Bible is about, and helps them notice many possible interpretations.
