Corpus Theognideum constitutes the largest anthology of poetry composed in the archaic or classical period as well as the only elegiac text that has been transmitted by medieval manuscripts. Nevertheless, the form in which we know this collection is provided an important basis for the discussion about its authenticity. The present article is the result of the examination of the problem both about the history of disputes concerning that subject, and about the reception of the Theognidean poems, traced in Byzantine, early modern and modern period. Special focus has been given to the manuscript tradition, e.g. the most ancient codex Paris suppl. gr. 388 and Vaticanus, gr. 915, which bears witness to the popularity of the Theognidean elegies in the Byzantine age. The very raising of the subject in the form presented above was inspired by Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutic method: based on this methodological proposal, the author sought to understand the evidence of the past in the proper historical context and to revise some dogmatic interpretations of other researchers; in this manner the author notes that the transmission of Corpus Theognideum is not really a solid foundation on which to build an argument about the falseness of the whole collection.

Man, curious about the world, learns about the surrounding reality in various ways. In exploring knowledge of reality, he uses his senses and intellect. For centuries, it was believed that all data that the intellect possesses is delivered to him through the senses. It is obvious that we receive most news from the world around us through the sense of sight and hearing. However, this does not change the fact that the other senses, that is, smell, touch and taste, play a significant role in our everyday lives and in exploring the reality around us. Following this thinking and focusing on the sense of smell, it can be concluded that we can try to learn about the world by smelling it. In the following article I describe the role of fragrances in the poetry of Propercius. For the sake of maintaining a certain methodological order, at the beginning I introduce the figure of a Roman poet. Then, I briefly comment the translation into Polish, which is my direct source for work. Next, I point to individual examples of the functioning of the fragrance category in the work of the said author. After analyzing the mentioned fragments, I allow myself to make a certain synthesis and draw conclusions.
The article concentrates on the lofty representation of the protagonist of the collection of lyrical works. "Pieśni o księciu Józefie" make a reference, in their historical and axiological aspects, to the biography by Szymon Askenazy, "Książę Józef Poniatowski 1763-1813" [Prince Józef Poniatowski 1763-1813]. That biography presents the central figure as an exemplary patriot and citizen, who does not hesitate to give his life for the fatherland. The poet, however, goes much further than Askenazy in elevating his hero, as he sacralises the figure of prince Poniatowski by making him the main martyr of the national cause, who pleads for Poland with God.
The paper analyses the themes of mourning, literature and people-animals relationship in The Friend by Sigrid Nunez. It also discusses how the novel conforms to and diverges from certain elegiac conventions. The argument put forward is that by preserving some of these conventions and distorting others the novel becomes a modern elegy in prose, which is characterised by preoccupation with loss. The loss, however, is not only personal but has a more general, all-encompassing character

Artykuł analizuje motywy żałoby, twórczości literackiej i relacji pomiędzy zwierzętami i ludźmi w powieści Przyjaciel Sigrid Nunez.
“The Book of Traveling Elegies” by Jan Rybiński is not just a description of the author's journey especially to foreign universities, in order to gain extensive humanistic knowledge, but, and this is probably the most interesting, is also a kind of „visiting card” for the Renaissance intellectual member of the respublica litterarum community. The article presents the methods that Rybiński used to present his person in a subtle and clear way to a new, but also demanding environment of intellectuals gathered in Toruń. The article presents both the pragmatic aspect of this self- -presentation, related to the work undertaken by the poet, as well as the purely artistic one, addressed directly to local Toruń humanists.
The paper includes two Polish translations of two Latin elegies of Jan Kochanowski. Their author is a Late-Renaissance poet Jan Daniecki (died after 1611), known for his passion for the antique tradition since he also translates some works of Lucian of Samosata. The first work tells the heroic deeds and tragic death of the legendary princess Wanda; the second one presents the story of two lovers, Odatis and Zariadres, overcoming all odds to unite and live happily ever after.
Recenzenci i czytelnicy dostrzegali jednak w niektórych wierszach nawiązania do socrealistycznej twórczości autora „Mostu Poniatowskiego”.

In 1965 Władysław Broniewski published a collection “Anka” (“Annie”) that includes poems devoted to his deceased daughter. Linking the date with the time of political breakthrough led to believe that the elegy’s personal overtone is a declaration made by “the Polish People’s Republic leading poet” to depart from committed poetry. However, critics and reviewers discerned in some poems references to his socialist realist creativity. Feliksa Lichodziejewska, the main editor of Broniewski’s pieces, discerned in the poems traces supporting the view that the poet eliminated or changed fragments of the initial version of the poems that later shaped this elegiac cycle. In such actions undertaken by Broniewski, the editor and also other critics disclosed the will to hide emotions and a plan to preserve the image of an unshaken poet-revolutionist. Presenting “Anka” (“Annie”) as a token of resigning from “formal optimism” characteristic of socialist realist literature, Lichodziejewska attempted to eradicate or to invalidate the proofs of Broniewski’s involvement into politically and historically compromised reality. Reading the elegiac cycle as an attempt to cut off from the past creativity effected in disregarding the poet’s past achievements and deprived the title character—a young director and documentary filmmaker Joanna Broniewska-Kozicka—of her voice. The fragments that the editor regarded as an expression of complete breaking up with the socialist realist convention were indeed allusions to the previous poems or conversations with the daughter. Kozicka’s premature death a while before the Polish October 1956 resulted in her “getting stuck” in time.

In Memory of W. B. Yeats by W. H. Auden and Elegy Before the War by A. Ostriker are two “pre-war” elegies, in which the personal element is confronted with the political. The Auden’s poem portrays the death of a known figure with the background of the unsteady 30s of the 20th century, when the fear of fascism and its repercussions was common. In the long, 7-pieces work of Ostriker framework is the portrait of the poet’s dead mother, and the inlay is the ardent and ironic anti-war manifesto, in which the author not only attacks the American imperialism obvious during the Iraqi war, but she also meditates on the sense of war and violence. The elegy of the poet born in Great Britain, and especially the phrase “poetry makes nothing happen”, is the starting point and a pretext for Ostriker to initiate a dialogue regarding the role of poetry and its relationship to the politics. The analysis of both poems in regard to the essays of both authors discussing the sense of poetry, their other works, and also the “post-war elegies” (The Shield of Achilles and The Eight and Thirteenth) reveals that the stance of both of the poets regarding the role of poetry is ambiguous and unstable. Also interesting are their poetical considerations in the context of the dilemma indicated in the Ostriker’s Poem 60 Years after Auschwitz, in which the poet wonders, what should be the shape of poetry and its overtone after the holocaust.
Cztery polskojęzyczne epigramaty poświęcone „pszczołom budziwiskim” (Fraszki, „Księgi wtóre”, 83-86), dwie łacińskie miniatury z tomu Foricoenia (44, 45) oraz Elegia IX z „Księgi III” Elegiarum libri quattuor Jana Kochanowskiego dokumentują jego związki z Mikołajem Radziwiłłem Czarnym (1515-1565), kanclerzem wielkim litewskim i wojewodą wileńskim, przywódcą protestantów w państwie polsko-litewskim.

Four Polish language epigrams on the “Budziwiszki bees” (Epigrams, Second Books, 83-86), two Latin miniatures from the volume Foricoenia (44, 45) and Elegy IX of Book III Elegiarum libri quattuor by Jan Kochanowski document his relationship with Nikolai Radziwill the Black (1515-1565), the great Lithuanian chancellor and voivode of Vilnius, the leader of the Protestants in the Polish-Lithuanian State. The poetic miniatures were probably written between June 10 and October 19, 1563 in Budziwiszki aka Bujwidiszki (now Buivydiškės) near Vilnius, and Kochanowski wrote Elegy IX in autumn 1563. While in Elegy IX the poet creates the image of Radziwill as a statesman, a servant of the state of King Zygmunt August, in the unpretentious epigrams the magnate is presented as a patron surrounded by the humanists who promote reformation. Kochanowski described lexicographer John Mączyński, poet Andrew Trzecieski junior and most probably Cyprian Bazylik, poet, musician, and printer, as the Radziwill “bees” – hard-working, charitable, bringing the truth to the God's earth (a reference to a Platonic topos). In his epigrams, the author showed Nikolai Radziwill the Black as a patron of culture of the new format promoting Protestantism, and the creators gathered around him as a coherent literary milieu. Although it was presented in an affirmative way, Kochanowski maintained an attitude of the benevolent outsider. It is reflected by the skeptical tone of foricoenium 45 and biographical circumstances of the poet who was the then secretary of Bishop Piotr Myszkowski.
Attempts to imitate the metric verse of classical antiquity in Polish literature involved the need to use an oxytonic accent in the clausula. A dispute broke out in the 18th century in connection with that problem. Polemicists discussed possible ways of transferring to Polish poetry the structure of the standard elegy, as well as the function of masculine rhyme, which was linked to that particular genre. Masculine rhyme, perceived as frivolous and light, was felt by the Enlightenment poets and theorists to be unsuitable for emotional, melancholy lyric poetry.

The article describes the undertaken semiotic analysis of space in elegy II 26a of Properius both at the level of textual events (narrative) and at the level of poem composition. Referring to the Propertian inspiration by visual arts (M. Hubbard), the author uses the concept of an ekphrastic technique of space composition to show the function of the “border” motif in a liminal and transgressive space model as well as interpersonal relations. In result the author concludes that the above-mentioned levels of poetic images and the composition of the text are connected by a transgressive figure of the subject, able to cross the boundary created between the “story of a dream” and the narrator–reader (or listener) relationship. This leads to the argument that elegy II 26a is a form of monodrama with the central figure of the subject–actor, who, like a angellos in the drama, simultaneously operates in the “stage” space of the narrator–recipient relation and the space of textual fiction.

Elegia żałośna, scil[icet], Tryumf francmasonów z wygnania jezuitów z Petersburga, signed by Wincenty Wierzbiłowicz, was composed in the circle of freemasons, soon after the expulsion of the members of the Society of Jesus from the then capital of the Russian Empire. The poem, which refers to the events that were painful to the Jesuits, is saturated with irony and derision. Even its title is ambiguous as in an ‘elegy’ the reader should be presented with poetry expressing grief and lamenting some loss. Yet the author of this composition proclaims his joy over the misfortune that befell the Jesuits. He discredits the value of their teaching and casts serious doubt upon the special bond with Christ that the Jesuits claimed to have. Also, he is sure that the removal of the followers of St Ignatius from Saint Petersburg will wipe out their sense of superiority over the “commoners” and put an end to their infamous equivocation. Wierzbiłowicz describes the Jesuits as “villains”, and the principles and ideas they expounded are associated by him with “filth”. At the end of the poem, its tone changes. The author applauds the designs of Alexander I. Initially, the tsar intended to unite all religions as one and to revive spiritual life beyond the confines of particular denominations. He planned to establish a universal Church. The idea of freedom of religion, propagated by freemasons, concurred with his venture. Freemasons supported Alexander’s initiative and voiced their conviction that, as the Jesuits had been expelled from the Russian capital city, no one could hinder the implementation of the project. It is not known if the Jesuits prepared any direct response to Elegia żałośna, but the reputation and respectability of the order were definitely defended by Józef Morelowski, a Jesuit poet from Połock (now Polatsk, Belarus). In his works, he attacked freemasonry, arguing that members of masonic lodges spread lies about the Society of Jesus.
Štúdia sa zameriava na kontrastívnu komparáciu elegických básní R. M. Rilkeho a J. Silana. Rainer Maria Rilke a Janko Silan predstavujú vo viacerých poetologických charakteristikách opačné básnické typy (charakterizujú ich také zásadné protiklady ako intelektuálnosť / emocionálnosť, osobnosť / nadosobnosť, individualizmus / sociatívnosť, hatenie detenzie / hatenie tenzie). Rainer Maria Rilke predstavuje jednu z najviac kanonizovaných postáv európskeho modernizmu, Janko Silan je reprezentantom katolíckeho modernizmu a patrí medzi literatúry malých národov (slovenská literatúra). Janko Silan v básnickej skladbe Slávme to spoločne tematizuje život a smrť svojej matky. Hodnotovo naplená existencia podľa nich spočíva v prehĺbenom a otvorenom postoji k životu, do ktorého človek prijme a integruje aj tenzívne skúsenosti.

The study focuses on the contrastive comparative analysis of the elegiac poems of R. M. Rilke and J. Silan. In several poetological characteristics, Rainer Maria Rilke and Janko Silan present opposite poetic types (characterized by such fundamental contradictions as intellectuality / emotionality, personality / metapersonality, individualism / sociativity, blocking of tension / blocking of a lack of tension. Rainer Maria Rilke is one of the most canonized figures of European modernism, Janko Silan is a representative of Catholic modernism and belongs to the literature of small nations (Slovak literature). The contrastive comparative analysis allows the perception such connections in the poetic texts of both authors that would stay unnoticed without contrastive literary context. The basic interpretive line is to identify the sources of tension and lack of tension elements in both poets. The interpretation of elegies of both authors has uncovered new knowledge of the fundamental principles of the poetic world of both authors. The tension of The Duino elegies does not lie in personal loss, it is meta-personal philosophizing, intellectual poetry. The lyrical subject experiences a value deficit created by the problematization of life based on traditional values, religious ideas and ideologies. However, the answer does not bring the relief of a lack of tension to the lyrical subject; 134 quite the contrary, the accumulation of questions and answers increases the tension. The problem of the lyrical subject concentrates in the area of the »head«. The sequence of tension motifs has the nature of intellectual problematization. Janko Silan in the poem Slávme to spoločne (Let's Celebrate it Together) discusses the life and death of his mother. The poem is thus marked by the author's biographical context. The discursivity is characterized by dialogue and emotionality that are caused by the autobiographical nature of the topic. The problem of the lyrical subject is concentrated in the area of the »heart«. The Christian ideological framework makes that author initially block the tension (sadness) and focuses more on the celebration. Although Janko Silan does not find a problem in the traditional Christian religious framework, he subjectivizes it by creating a personal spiritual world where the focus is on a connection with the dead ancestors (with his mother). The common ground in the approach of both authors is that through an elegiac genre framework they have expressed views on major literary themes: life, death, love (personal or meta-personal). Although in different ways, both of them achieved the problematization of life based on a simple possession of values. The existence filled with values according to them lies in a deep and open attitude to life, to which a human being accepts and integrates the tension experience.

Niniejsze studium koncentruje się na kontrastywnym porównaniu elegijnych wierszy R.M.Rilkego i J. Silana. Twórczość analizowanych przeze mnie przedstawicieli zaliczanych do nurtu modernistycznego, czyli Rainera Marii Rilkego i Janko Silana ukazuje ich poetyckość w zupełnie różnym świetle, bo charakteryzuje ich całkowita różnorodność i odmienność, skupiająca się na zagadnieniach, które dotyczą np.: intelektualności i emocjonalności, osobowości i indywidualności, niszczenia spokoju i burzenia napięcia. Rainer Maria Rilke to jedna z najbardziej wiodących osobowości modernizmu europejskiego, natomiast Janko Silan to przedstawiciel modernizmu katolickiego należący do literatury małych 135 narodów (por. literatura słowacka). Janko Silan w utworze poetyckim Slávme to spoločne [dosł. pol. Świętujmy to razem] opisuje życie i śmierć swojej matki. Przedstawiony wiersz zawiera kontekst biograficzny.
