Emotions, stepping stones or pitfalls in learning a foreign language?

The article is centered on the role emotions play while a foreign language is learnt. Which of the following factors prevail on the learner: the enchantment of words, the magic of sounds or the anxiety linked to linguistic uncertainty and frustration due to lack of comprehension? After revising the place of emotions in the languages'didactics history, we are going to show both the universality of emotions and their cultural component. The examples provided during this lecture have been taken from three foreign authors who studied French with a different degree of joy or suffering.

Dans le travail, l’attention est focalisée sur le rôle des émotions dans l’apprentissage d’une langue étrangère. Quelle émotion prédomine chez celui lui apprend : le charme des mots, la magie des sons ou l’anxiété liée à l’insécurité linguistique, la peur au ridicule ou la frustration rattachée à l’incompréhension ? Après un bref rappel du rôle accordé aux émotions dans l’histoire de la didactique des langues, on se penche sur la part d’universalité et de façonnage culturel dans les émotions. Les exemples fournis proviennent de trois auteurs étrangers polyglottes ayant appris le français avec un degré de joie ou de souffrance variable.

W artykule autorka skupiła uwagę na roli emocji w nauczaniu języka obcego. Pyta, jakie uczucia towarzyszą procesowi dydaktycznemu: urok słów, magia dźwięków lub brak pewności w posługiwaniu się językiem, obawa przed ośmieszeniem czy frustracja związana z niezrozumieniem? Po zarysowaniu zagadnienia roli emocji w dydaktyce języków obcych autorka zastanawia się nad zakresem uniwersaliów w modelowaniu przeżywania i wyrażania emocji. Analiza obejmuje relacje trzech obcokrajowców uczących się języka francuskiego.
