The aim of this article is to discuss the “multimedia encyclopedia” genre launched in the 1980s, the era of “the multimedia revolution.” Encyclopedias of this kind were released on CD-ROM by several well-respected encyclopedia publishers and were widely discussed as an innovation which would lead to information and communication technologies extending rather than replacing the Gutenberg Galaxy. While discussing the launch of multimedia encyclopedias I aim to show how the culture of the printed word was perceived in “the information revolution” discourse of the time by relevant cultural intermediaries.

The presentation of the first and the second volume of the Encyclopedia took place on July 11th 2017 in Lvov. This unique publication offers a comprehensive information about the first scientific organisation in Ukraine. Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society was established in 1892, long before Ukrainian Academy of Sciences has been founded (1918). In 1940 Shevchenko Scientific Society was banned by the Soviet regime, although it continued to function underground. In 1947 it renew its operations abroad. It was fully reactivated on October 21st 1989. Currently Shevchenko Scientific Society has ca. 1700 members. In the past, among its members were influential foreign scientists like Albert Einstein, Aleksander Brückner, Tomáš Masaryk, Max Planck and others. On June 12th 2017 during a meeting in Kiev with the President of Shevchenko Scientific Society in America, prof. George Grabovich, were discussed the perspectives of future cooperation between Shevchenko Scientific Society and its regional offices.

The aim of this paper is to examine intertextual relations between Olga Tokarczuk’s The Books of Jacob and New Athens by Benedykt Chmielowski which are interesting due to the ongoing debate about (un)encyclopedic and (un)scientific nature of „the oldest polish encyclopedia”. Both the author of New Athens and the book itself are used by Polish Nobel Laureate as symbols of the soon-to-be gone pre-Enlightenment era, and they are contrasted with the work of Johann Heinrich Zeler or Denis Diderot. It is worth noting that this particular image of New Athens is determined by edition used by Tokarczuk. Author of Flights was familiar with and influenced by the famous edition of New Athens made by Maria and Jan Józef Lipscy. Interferences in the structure of the original text, highly subjective and tendencious selection of included material and addition of satirical images by Szymon Kobyliński shaped perception of New Athens as curious and bizarre work, alien to ideals of 18th century encyclopedists. This edition perpetuated the „black legend” of the so-called „first polish encyclopedia”. Polish Nobel Prize laureate – by using this particular edition – unwillingly and unknowingly took part in a centuries long debate about the work of Chmielowski. This entanglement leads to interesting problems and asks serious questions: how choice of sources can influence one’s perception of text? How different would be usage of this encyclopedia and its role in the novel if Tokarczuk would not be familiar with Lipscy edition? In this paper the author compares three different New Athens: the original ones, written by Benedykt Chmielowski, famous edition made by Józef and Maria Lipscy and fictional New Athens described in The Books of Jacob.

There’s always been a question, whether reportage is literature or not, but nobody has ever asked, whether there is any connection between this genre and science. The main purpose of this thesis is to prove that reportage is a literary genre closely related to the humanities and social sciences. By analyzing two multi-genred works, which contain elements typical both of reportage and dictionary: Egzamin na świra, czyli mały i niepraktyczny słownik slangu hipisowskiego… by Jacek Hugo -Bader and Jakuck. Słownik miejsca by Michał Książek, I will try to find out what kind of impact is created by mixing those genres. The thesis will be started by discussion concerning main features of both kinds of works and their styles and after that, precise reading will prove, if the main idea of the article was reasonable or not.

The article is a reflection on the dictionary as an ideological battleground illustrated with the example of thematic dictionaries or encyclopedias of the Age of Enlightenment. The perspective of the study is philosophical and religious, centred on the ideas of natural and universal religion as elements of conflicting worldviews. We will discuss the controversy surrounding the Philosophical Dictionary by Voltaire, who was attacked by Catholic clergymen such as Chaudon, Paulian, François or Nonnotte.

Artykuł dotyczy gatunkowych i stylistycznych związków między powieścią Faraon Bolesława Prusa a dziewiętnastowiecznym piśmiennictwem poświęconym starożytnemu Egiptowi Monografie, podręczniki, reportaże, artykuły gazetowe występują tu nie tyle jako źródła wiedzy, ile jako gatunkowa matryca wypracowana przez i dla człowieka Zachodu, umożliwiająca mu pisanie i czytanie o staroegipskiej cywilizacji. Szczególną uwagę poświęca autor roli prasy, zwłaszcza „Tygodnika Ilustrowanego”, gdzie Prus publikował swą powieść. Dziewiętnastowieczne czasopismo, zdaniem autora, nie jest wyłącznie miejscem publikacji utworu literackiego. Zawarte w nim teksty wchodzą z nim w rozmaite relacje stylistyczne, gatunkowe i poznawcze. „Tygodnik Ilustrowany” pośredniczył między Faraonem a piśmiennictwem egiptologicznym poprzez szereg artykułów popularyzujących.

The paper examines generic and stylistic relations between the novel Pharaoh by Bolesław Prus and the 19th century writings devoted to the ancient Egypt. Monographs, handbooks, reportages, newspaper articles are considered not so much the sources of the knowledge as the sort of generic matrix elaborated for people of the West to write and read on the Egyptian civilisation. The author discusses several connections between Pharaoh and the content of “Tygodnik Ilustrowany”, a weekly where the novel was published. The 19th century press is considered here not a merely medium for a novel in serial nor even a simple source of ideology, but also a network of generic and thus cognitive instruments necessary for a novelist.
