The purpose of the paper is to present a description of the meaning of the Polish verb [ktośi] podpowiedział [komuśj], że p. In dictionaries of contemporary Polish language, the verb podpowiedzieć (advise) is described as an ambiguous word. The author claims that there is only one meaning of the verb podpowiedzieć. It refers to such a speech act, in which the speaker has to assume that the addressee is about to do something, but he lacks sufficient knowledge to perform that action. The speaker thinks that someone can manage the addressee's problem if one knows about a certain set of sentences, with particular expressions belonging to it, and that they are true. One of these sentences becomes the content of the speech act described.
