W artykule zaprezentowano badania dotyczące kolokacji łaskawy czytelnik oraz formuły pożegnalnej bądź łaskaw w przedmowach do dzieł z okresu 2. poł. XVII i 1. poł. XVIII w. Na podstawie m.in. kwerend słownikowych poszukiwano genezy obu wyrażeń, natomiast badania korpusowe (na materiale z ogólnego korpusu historycznego oraz korpusu specjalistycznego utworzonego z 152 przedmów do dzieł z lat 1650–1750) wsparte metodami statystycznymi posłużyły do wskazania funkcji pełnionych w tekście przez te formuły. Wykazano, że oba wyrażenia odznaczają się wysokim stopniem skonwencjonalizowania i funkcjonują na zasadzie szablonu, a kolokacja łaskawy czytelnik jest słowem kluczowym w ujęciu statystycznym dla tekstów wstępnych kierowanych do anonimowego odbiorcy w dojrzałym i późnym baroku oraz epoce saskiej.

The article presents research on the collocation łaskawy czytelniku (‘kind reader’) and the farewell formula bądź łaskaw (‘will you be so kind as to’) in Polish literature from 1650–1750. Based on, inter alia, dictionary queries, the origin of both expressions was searched for, while corpus research (using the material of the general historical corpus and the specialized corpus consisting of 152 prefaces to works from 1650–1750) supported by statistical methods was used to indicate the functions performed by these formulas in the text. It has been shown that both expressions are highly conventionalized and function as templates, and the collocation łaskawy czytelniku is a statistical key word for introductory texts to an anonymous recipient in the ripe and late Baroque and the Saxon era.

The article discusses the metatextual and intertextual dimension of one of the mottos for The Emperor by Ryszard Kapuściński, which is a quote from The New Athens by Benedykt Chmielowski. The latter was the first Polish encyclopaedia, which was highly undervalued by traditional authorities in the field of literary history, for it failed to meet the intellectual standards of the Enlightenment and was marked with the anachronistic mentality of the Saxon times. The analysis relates to the way in which Chmielowski’s motto provides an interpretative frame for the controversial book by Kapuściński, devoted to the decline and fall of the oldest African Empire – Ethiopia – in the 1960s and 1970s. The author of the paper’s main focus falls on the relationship between the meaning of the source text and the semantics of modern reportage, the role played by the popular image of Benedykt Chmielowski in the process of interpretation, the relationship between the quote and the archaic style of The Emperor, and the ways in which the quote from The New Athens interacts with the other mottos of the book – the multiplicity of which signals a new narrative strategy used by the reporter and writer.
