This discussion paper deals with equal opportunities for women and men policy in the Czech Republic financed by the European Social Fund. It presents findings of a case study focused on the position of the “gender expert” which was introduced as obligatory within call no. 76 OP HRE, area of support 3.4 “Equal Opportunities of Women and Men on the Labour Market and Reconciliation of Family and Working Life,” in order to increase the quality of equal opportunities projects. The evaluative case study concludes that the position was not defined sufficiently which lowered the potential quality improvement of the projects. Further policy steps are suggested and a broader context is discussed where the position of the “gender expert” may surprisingly be seen as a contribution to the financial stability of some NGOs focused on equal opportunities. The paper also aims to provide those who work as gender experts with an opportunity for a much needed self-reflection.

The report “Poland 2030 – Development Challenges” shows that improving the situation of women in the labour market is a key challenge, as doing so will allow Poland to ride the fast track of modernisation. A number of problems women have on the labour market are caused by the traditional perception of woman as mother and wife. The article first presents the disparities between men and women in employment during the period of Polish accession to the European Union. Furthermore, the main stereotypes of Polish women: Polish Mother, businesswoman and the ideal woman, are presented as the cause of the phenomenon called occupational segregation, “the glass ceiling”, “the sticky floor”, the predominance of unemployed women over men, and unequal treatment in the recruitment process. The key finding of this article is that companies must combat the stereotypical grouping of men and women as two categories of workers with different predispositions. To achieve this goal it is important to promote the implementation of equal employment opportunity policies in Polish companies.

Currently we are witnessing the clash of two trends in social policy towards people with intellectual disabilities. The first stems from the idea of equality, it is predominant and is well rooted in the public consciousness. The second, due to the diversity of ideas, is an announcement non-heterosexual people or former prisoners. of the upcoming changes. The idea of diversity has already had an impact on social policy towards. I deal with questions relating to the first stream – the policy of equal opportunities. The article is empirical. I analyze the practice of professional activation of people with intellectual disabilities in the context of equal opportunities policy, which is an exemplification of symbolic violence contained in the way of understanding the concept of “a person with intellectual disabilities”. I try to show that the theoretical constructs, promoted by the experts of the dominant public discourse, impose ways of working within the framework of social policy. The construct “mentally retarded” harnesses the essence of being a handicap, and construct “a person with intellectual disabilities” throws out intellectual disability, making handicapped Normals harder educated. In this way, the language allows the operation of a discriminatory nature in the name of noble ideas.
