Erotetic Epistemic Logic

100%
EN
This paper presents a logic of questions developed as an extension of (S5) epistemic logic. We discuss many features that are important for erotetic logic (formalization and semantics of questions, answerhood conditions, and inferential structures with questions). The aim is to introduce an erotetic system which corresponds well with epistemic terms and can form an appropriate background for dynamic approaches in epistemic logic.

IEL-based Formal Dialogue System for Tutorials

88%
EN
FFormal dialogue system for tutorials DL(IEL)T is introduced. The system allows for modelling certain behaviours related to questioning agendas observed in tutorial dialogues. Inferential Erotetic Logic is the underlying logic of questions used here. Tutorial dialogues retrieved from the Basic Electricity and Electronics Corpus are presented and analysed with the use of DL(IEL)T.

The dependency relation between questions is discussed in terms of compliance (developed within inquisitive semantics – INQ) and erotetic implication (developed within Inferential Erotetic Logic – IEL). I show that INQ approach to questions’ dependency is more narrow and strict than the one offered by IEL.

Our research provides formal tools for analyses of reasoning involved in solutions to a specific class of abductive problems. We present two models of this reasoning. The first one is grounded in the logic of questions and employs a weak version of erotetic implication. The second one is construed in terms of relations of sifting and funneling. Definitions of these relations involve the logic of questions, situational semantics, and the concept of topic relevance. As we show on the basis of a Mind Maze gameplay case study, these models account well for empirical data.
