This review of Monika Sznajderman’s autobiographical essay endeavours to show the techniques and the ethical value of reconstructing Polish and Jewish fates entangled in the history of the author’s family and her own dualistic identity. The review retells a story of Jewish and Polish relations during the war, and demonstrates how Sznajderman manages to avoid stereotypes in her work. Finally, it is emphasised that it is not the historical processes that interest Sznajderman the most, but rather the interpersonal relations.

Recenzja autobiograficznego eseju Moniki Sznajderman koncentruje się na technikach i etycznym wymiarze rekonstrukcji żydowskiego oraz polskiego losu w historii rodziny i własnej dwojakiej tożsamości pisarki. Autorka recenzji przedstawia opowieść o Żydach i Polakach w czasie wojny, pokazuje także, w jaki sposób Sznajderman unika, konstruując swoją wypowiedź, stereotypów. W recenzji podkreśla się również, że nie tło historyczne, ale międzyludzkie więzi najmocniej interesują eseistkę.

Artykuł jest poświęcony książce Ewy Bieńkowskiej Dom na Rozdrożu i dotyczy problematyki współczesnej kobiecej autobiografii pisanej „w rodzinie”. W interpretacji tej narracji wspomnieniowej, która jest właściwie esejem autobiograficznym, autorka artykułu podejmuje przede wszystkim takie kwestie, jak relacje rodzinne – ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kulturowych i społecznych dyskursów dotyczących kobiecych rodzinnych więzi – a także indywidualizm, podmiotowość, emancypacja oraz wiążące się z nimi doświadczenia funkcjonowania członków rodziny zarówno w przestrzeni społeczno-politycznej, jak i prywatnej.

The article is about Dom na Rozdrożu by Ewa Bieńkowska and concerns problems with contemporary female autobiography written ‘inside family.’ The author of the article interprets this flashback narration, which is actually autobiographical essay, by posing questions about such issues as: family relations – especially cultural and social discourses of female family connections – also individualism, subjectivity, emancipation and experiences of performing family members as well as in private space.

The aim of this paper is to analyze bell hooks’s selected autobiographical essays, gathered in the collection Talking Back. Feminist Thinking. Thinking Black (1989) in terms of women’s autobiographical practices. I am interested in the question of how the reflection on a personal/biographical experience can contribute to the validation of woman’s own voice, and ultimately to self-empowerment. The answer I propose refers to the strategies described by bell hooks. In her opinion the autobiographical narrative and speaking one’s own voice – which means the appreciation of personal experience – is a political gesture, a symbol of giving oneself the status of the subject.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza wybranych esejów autobiograficznych bell hooks, zebranych w zbiorze pt. Talking Back. Thinking Feminist. Thinking Black (1989) pod kątem kobiecych praktyk autobiograficznych. Interesuje mnie, jak refleksja nad doświadczeniem osobistym/biograficznym może przyczynić się do uprawomocnienia własnego głosu, a ostatecznie do samoupodmiotowienia. Odpowiedź, jaką proponuję, odnosi się do strategii opisanych przez bell hooks, dla której autobiograficzna narracja, mówienie własnym głosem, a więc dowartościowanie doświadczenia osobistego, jest gestem politycznym, symbolem nadania sobie statusu podmiotu.
