Ten krótki artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, co znaczy, że podmiot cierpienia jest współobecny sensowi tegoż cierpienia. Kiedy chcemy wyeksponować problematykę cierpienia, powinniśmy zwrócić uwagę na dwie jego płaszczyzny. Pierwszą jest sytuacja, w której cierpienie się ukazuje. Wówczas jego sens wiąże się z pytaniami: „kto”, „co” i „kiedy”. Taką płaszczyznę nazwaliśmy horyzontalną. Jednak rzeczywisty sens cierpienia odsłania się w płaszczyźnie wertykalnej. Tu podmiot cierpienia związany jest z pytaniami: „jak głęboko”, „jak bardzo”, „na ile”. W planie tym zatem nie okoliczności determinują podmiotowość, lecz wartości. Stają się one tłem działania. Tło to z kolei odsłania współobecność podmiotu względem wartości wówczas, kiedy sytuacja związana z cierpieniem poddaje w wątpliwość (bycie) istnienie tegoż podmiotu.

This short article is an attempt to answer the question: what does it mean that the self as subject of suffering participates in the sense of this suffering? Two plains should be indicated when problem of suffering is expressed. The first one is the situation when suffering came out. At that time anguish’s meaning can allude to questions about ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘why’. This level is called horizontal. But the real sense of suffering is complemented in the vertical level. It means that the subject of suffering is more conditioned by the problems of ‘how deep’, ‘how much’, ‘what degree’. Here, the subject is determined not by circumstances but by values. Values are the background of subject’s actions. These are a fundamental horizon for the analyzed problem of suffering. When suffering’s situation undermine being of the subject, the background of values reveals subject’s co-presence.
