In the years 2004 and 2005 a survey was conducted that focused on recording of authentic testimonies about the everyday lives of women in the country predominantly in the second half of the 20th century. Correspondents of the Czech Ethnographical Society, students and female seniors from different parts of the Czech Republic took part in the survey. this report reveals the results including characteristic quotations. The information was obtained from different localities on an uneven basis. There is a compact set of records from four villages in eastern Moravia and four authentic testimonies from Těšín region in the foothills of Beskydy Mountains. The information was either handwritten by the respondents, or their narration was recorded by the Czech Ethnographical Society correspondents, students of Silesian University or by a local chronicler. The outline of the research was available to everyone. We were above all interested in the changes which rural families had to go through in the second half of the 20th century due to collectivization of land and changes in social and economic conditions.
The study is focused territorially on the region of Moravian Gate that covers the foothills of the Beskids, the Hostýnské and the Oderské Hills. In this region, only few examples of wooden vernacular architecture have survived to date, among them timbered barns are the most remarkable buildings. Dendrochronological dating proved that the preserved buildings had been built mainly at the turn of the 19th century. The timbered barn in Skalička near Hranice comes from the second half of the 16th century. As early as from the second half of the 19th century, these originally wooden buildings were rebuilt to the bricked ones, as the entire farmstead was. Another reason for disappearing of wooden barn was that private farming began to vanish in the mid-20th century. The discovered wooden barns are usually used as storage rooms for different materials. Many of them have survived in fragments and their owners are not interested in safeguarding them. Contemplations about the preservation of some of these ancient buildings are justified.
The lack of respect for nature resulting from anthropocentric axiology and manifesting itself in the exploitation of natural resources is considered the root cause of the ecological crisis. In this context, on the basis of the author’s ethnographic studies conducted in the area of Słowiński National Park, the author addresses the question of defining what that protection is and how it should be carried out. The author presents the analysis of shaping the local space of identification of the residents of Smołdzino municipality. The strict protection plan has turned out to be destructive in terms of the local infrastructure, social relations, tourism, and it has also proved to be totally inadequate for the protection of virgin land.
Celem eseju jest omówienie badań Alice Goffman, opublikowanych w książce On the Run. Fugitive Life in an American City (2014) w kontekście innych badań oraz aktualnych debat na temat wykluczenia i przemocy w miastach amerykańskich. W pierwszej części przedstawiony został kontekst społeczny i badawczy omawianej problematyki.

The aim of the essay is to discuss Alice Goffman’s research, published in the book On the Run. Fugitive Life in an American City (2014), set against the backdrop of other research and current debates on social exclusion and violence in the cities of the USA. The first part of the text focuses on the social and scholarly context of the problems discussed. The second part relates the main critical arguments to the ethnographic research and the response thereto by the authors involved in this type of research. The last part of the essay presents the way of conducting her study by Goffman and offers a critical discussion.
In the article the author shares her experience in research on counselling practices of virtual communities. The aim of the study was to understand the world of online communities, especially in relation to the advisory aspects. The author is interested in counselling, which in the age of the Internet has become public and personal experience. This text is not a presentation of research results. The author focused her attention on the research process, not on the final result. The specificity of the research was to agree with the perspective of the participant engaged in the virtual community and ethnographic description of the observed situation. Methodological inspiration for the author became the “emic” strategy by Kenneth Lee Pike. The “emic” studies emphasize the inner aspect of culture, the language, the participant’s perspective of culture. The adoption of such a research perspective has led the author to reflect on the difference between ethnography in the traditional sense and ethnography in the “emic” strategy. “Emic” strategy introduces some changes – the researcher is a member of the culture, his presence does not affect the others, he knows a lot more about the test culture, researcher is emotionally involved. The text ends with two diagrams showing the differences in the stages of research processes. The classical ethnographic research includes the following steps: 1) research plan, 2) entry into the research community, 3) observation, analysis, interpretation, description, 4) output from the research community. The author draws attention to the differences that are introduced by the “emic” strategy: 1) being a member of the community, 2) inspiration event, 3) the emergence of a research plan, 4) observation, analysis, interpretation, description, 5) will remain in the community.
This article is based on research on the life of the blind which has been conducted since 2011. The main group of ethnographic consultants consists of seventeen blind people at the age of 18-40, part of whom live, work or study in Wroclaw. The attention of the researcher is generally focused on problems related to entering adulthood, building one’s own independence and – most importantly – on the diversity of strategies and tactics, which help blind individuals organise their relations with material environment, groups of the blind, the sighted, public institutions, etc. In this article the author describes the basic ethical and moral dilemmas which appeared during the research and tries to find their reasons in the specificity of the studied group, chosen methodology, as well as in the nature of ethnography in a wider sense. The article touches several important, specific issues: ethnographic intimacy and trust; instability of the borderline between the professional and private identity of the researcher; tension arising due to bringing up questions difficult for the subjects; the complexity of lying and loyalty matters during the research process. Seeing a great chance for ethnography in practising an extensive collaboration with the people who participated in the research, the author has attached a commentary on the article made by one of his ethnographic consultants.
Właściwe sformułowanie consumer insight wymaga odrębnego podejścia do realizacji badań marketingowych.

An objective of the publication is to point out to the premises constituting the strategic role of consumer research as well as methods and techniques useful in creation of the brand image. There is emphasised that definition of the basic elements of brand identity (irrespective of the adopted development model) requires an insight in values, attitudes and needs of the target group. Those values, attitudes and needs are denoted as the co-called consumer insight. The proper formulation of consumer insight requires a discrete approach to marketing research accomplishment. There is growing the importance of triangulation at the level of research types and techniques, in order to recognise as wide spectre of consumers' behaviour motives as possible. The author also indicates the usefulness of ethnographic research in definition of the brand identity. That research is a valuable source of information, which, considering the way of their acquisition, raise the level of brand credibility.
The presented research is a microethnographic report from a visual ethnography undertaken in May 2016, in 6 Japanese schools and 1 adult support center with disabilities located on island Kyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture. The study deals with a issues of the educational material culture and refers to the study of space and school artifacts designed in schools for students with special educational needs – understood as intellectual disabilities and for adults with such potential as well. The research was grounded in E. Schein’s organizational culture, furthermore on the concept of private space and public space described by T. Tamura and my author’s concept developed at the reinterreted role of the handicapped human in stationary institution published by W. Wolfensberger’s (1969).

This article is a retrospective look at the research experiences of the two authors, who began their study of ethnic issues in Poland at the beginning of the 1990s. They discuss the place and role of the anthropologist in the research process, the social and political context of activities in the field, the researcher’s position in relation to the research subjects, power relations, positioning, and the prevailing forms of discourse. Their aim is to show the challenges and dilemmas facing a researcher of ethnic minorities, with the necessity of choosing a strategy of engagement or distance and the consequences of that choice.

The article is an etnographic study on coping by the means of constructing myths as a strategy used by men who attempt to improve their situation perceived as non-satisfactory or difficult. The opportunity to build practices of coping with the feeling of senselessness of one’s own actions, threatening changes, negative perception of oneself and the world can be, amongst others, fishing. What was discussed and analysed in the text is the meaning of difficult situations and practices of coping with them, as well as coping practices based on constructing the myth about fishing as a story about a constant and meaningful world.

The purpose of the work is to examine whether the implementation of the controlling system can affect the shape of the company’s organizational culture. The research was carried out among small, medium and large companies from the automotive industry, finance sector and industrial production. An ethnographic approach was adopted here, which means that the research was mainly of a qualitative nature in the form of an unstructured anthropological interview. The ethnographic text obtained in this way was the key to understanding the cultures of the studied enterprises. Participant observation was also an important research method, which enabled the author to access the so-called tacit knowledge. As a result of the research, a picture emerged of companies with a strong organizational culture for which controlling was an important part of their identity. In the summary of the work, the author presents a list of identified controlling artifacts and the cultural values.
The aim of the article is to identify and introduce divisions/typologies of contemporary managerial competences. The main research problem is to understand the processes taking place in business universities and their impact on shaping the next generations of managers. The article is based on the results of qualitative research inspired by the ethnography of the organization. 5-year research in the area of managerial education was conducted. The article presents competences important for various groups of the managerial education process. Specific breakdowns of these competences have been proposed. Reflections on the shaping of these competences in future managers as well as methods and ways of education are presented. The basis of empirical inquiry is qualitative material that cannot be generalized to the entire population. It is also inadvisable to draw sharp distinctions between the proposed concepts and typologies, as they are inherently fluid and ambiguous. The research was conducted over a period of 5 years, which is a unique advantage in the era of digitization and the ubiquitous domination of capitalist values. The research group is extremely broad and includes all participants / actors in the management education process.

The article contains information about people's notions about angels and the role they play in human life. Starting from the presentation of the heavenly forces hierarchy by Pseudo-Dionysius, the authors focus their attention on how people pictured angels as God's emissaries. Much space is devoted to contemporary relations, confirming the presence of the angels on earth also today. The texts of folk songs are also analysed, in which the angels accompany not only people, but also the Mother of God and the saints. Folk images of angels and the angel's features are also represented by the idiomatic expressions and anthroponyms, both secular and religious.

The most interesting social phenomena are usually difficult to access for a researcher. Different problems in such research projects appear every step a researcher take: reliability and credibility of informants, choosing a right research method, having insufficient knowledge about the subject. All these factors can cause that a researcher has not enough control over research process. Sometimes a researcher might not even be able to conduct everything he/she planned (e.g. he/she will be refused to conduct research in a total institution or the informants will not be willing to share pieces of information which are harmful for themselves). Quantitative methods are usually of no use in exploring such phenomena. Their complexity, specifics cause that researchers use qualitative methods. Choosing these methods does not mean that a researcher can avoid difficult decisions whilst doing the field work – it can happen that the last source of reference is researcher’s intuition and experience in field work. What are the ways of conducting research on closed or excluded groups, total institutions, specific professional groups, local communities or the phenomena that cause ethical doubts: actions ‘behind the scenes’ or other covert activity involving corruption or conflict of interest? What are the difficulties and problems we can expect? In my paper I present examples of different research on phenomena that are difficult to investigate.
This article is an ethnographic case studies report of daily activities undertaken by 4 homeless males aged 52–72 living in the shelter. The research question posed in this research report was: what daily activities do homeless males undertake? Data collection was carried out by phone in May 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic in Poland. Data was analyzed by coding and categorization [Gibbs 2011]. The results of the research allowed to establish the main category - everyday activities and 3 subcategories: the structure of everyday activities, activities giving pleasure and activities related to duties in the shelter. In addition, the results of the study also indicated a certain disproportionate amount of daily activities (activities, work) in relation to free time, which is the cause of monotony experienced by homeless male.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi etnograficzne studia przypadków aktywności codziennych podejmowanych przez 4 bezdomnych mężczyzn w wieku 52–72 lat, zamieszkujących w schronisku. Pytaniem badawczym, postawionym w niniejszym raporcie z badań, było: jakie aktywności codzienne podejmują bezdomni mężczyźni? Gromadzenie danych odbywało się telefonicznie w maju 2020 roku w czasie pandemii Covid-19 w Polsce. Dane analizowano techniką kodowania i kategoryzacji [Gibbs 2011].
The aim of the text is to reflect on the conceptualisation and status of research, which involves children. The article consists of two parts. The first one includes a comparative analysis of the specifics and conditions of research conducted with children and adults. The second part presents research results, where children were involved (interview and ethnographic observation) that bring the researcher closer to discover the school image from their own perspective. The conclusion indicates the necessity of reflective location of children research on a continuum – from the very similar to those which are carried out with adults.

Celem tekstu jest namysł nad konceptualizacją i statusem badań z dziećmi. Artykuł składa się z dwóch części. Pierwsza z nich zawiera analizę komparatywną specyfiki i uwarunkowań badań prowadzonych z dziećmi i z osobami dorosłymi. Część druga prezentuje rezultaty badań z udziałem dzieci (wywiad i obserwacja etnograficzna) przybliżających badacza do odkrycia obrazu szkoły z ich perspektywy.
The article discusses the preliminary conclusions of the ethnographic research, carried out in Wrocław at the turn of June and July 2019, regarding the perception of Wrocław Jews by young city residents. The research was aimed at verifying the state of knowledge about the history of Jews in Wrocław, their contemporary social, cultural and religious activities as well as the Jewish culture itself. An important aspect was to check how this community functions in the minds of young city residents, what is the impact of stereotypes on its perception, and what are the sources of knowledge about it. It was also important to determine which places in space are identified as Jewish and to find out if young residents of Wrocław participate in events organized by the Jewish community, how they evaluate them and whether they consider them necessary.
