In the broader spectrum of Protestant ethics Reinhold Niebuhr’s Christian realism still appears to be an important and useful concept. This paper explains several major aspects of the concept which made Niebuhr a very influential figure in the Christian and political context of American life in his days. This would include acknowledging the sinfulness of human nature and its impact on society while stressing the responsibility both of the individual and of the nation, particularly of the US in the postwar world. Niebuhr himself was active in the public debates and political life. His ideas have been recently revived among some American presidents and politicians who claimed to have been influenced by them. Several parallels can also be drawn between Protestant Christian realism and Catholic social teaching.

W XX-wiecznej amerykańskiej etyce protestanckiej, wewnętrznie bardzo zróżnicowanej, ukształtowała się wpływowa koncepcja chrześcijańskiego realizmu, której autorem był Reinhold Niebuhr (zm. 1971). Akcentowała ona konieczność realistycznego spojrzenia zwłaszcza na rzeczywistość społeczną, by uniknąć idealistycznego błędu teologii liberalnej. Oznaczało to m.in. potrzebę uznania ludzkiej grzeszności i jej skutków w różnych wymiarach życia społecznego. Postawa realistyczna zawiera też w sobie wezwanie do odpowiedzialności zarówno wżyciu osobistym, jak i w relacjach społecznych. W kontekście sytuacji międzynarodowej po II wojnie światowej Niebuhr wskazywał również na taką odpowiedzialność Stanów Zjednoczonych za kształtowanie sprawiedliwego i pokojowego ładu w świecie. Koncepcja Niebuhra, choć niekiedy krytykowana, w swoisty sposób odrodziła się w kontekście amerykańskiej sytuacji politycznej po zamachach z 11 września 2001r. Nie tylko prezydenci i politycy, ale także analitycy i komentatorzy polityczni przyznawali się do zależności od myśli Niebuhra. Koncepcja realizmu chrześcijańskiego zawiera też w sobie pewne podobieństwa do niektórych zagadnień z zakresu katolickiej myśli społecznej.

In diesem Artikel wurden die ethischen Dokumente der Synoden der Evangelischen Kirchen in Polen aus letzen 20 Jahren dargestellt. Diese Aussagen der Kirche sind die ethischen und seelsorgerlichen Antworten auf die Situation nach der politischen Wende. Es wurde die Rolle der Ethik in Fragestellung und Existenz der heutigen Kirchen, akzentuiert. In der Tradition der Evangelisch-Lutherischen (Augsburger Konfession) Kirche in Polen hat die Synode die besondere Funktion in der Formulierung der offiziellen Stellungnahmen. Nach der politischen Wende im Jahre 1989 versuchte auch die Evangelische Kirche ihre ethischen Positionen in die allgemeine Diskussion einzubringen. Zu den wichtigsten Dokumenten gehören die Stellungnahmen der Kirchen zur Abtreibungsdebatte und weiter zum Thema des polnischen EU-Beitritts. Diese Dokumente wurden jedoch von dem weiteren sozialen Publikum kaum in die Beachtung genommen. Der Verfasser betont, dass in den österreichischen oder tschechischen Kontext solche ethische Stellungnahmen im ökumenischen Gespräch formuliert wurden. Diese Erfahrung sollte man auf den polnischen kirchlichen Grund genommen werden.

The text is an attempt to read the Leo XIII’s encyclical “Rerum Novarum” (1891) in the context of Catholic entrepreneurship. The author proposes three theses in the article. Firstly, Max Weber’s view that Protestant ethics promotes the development of entrepreneurship better than the Catholic one was popularized in the literature. Secondly, the doctrine of the Catholic Church provides a lot of inspirations for carrying out an effective social and economic activity. Thirdly, the encyclical “Rerum Novarum” was the reference point for the Catholic entrepreneurship already at the end of the 19th century. The considerations are supplemented by some references to the history of social and economic thought and German economic history in the 20th century.
