Współpraca między Francją i Niemcami ma kluczowe znaczenie dla przyszłości Unii Europejskiej. Osłabiona po wyborach w 2017 r. długotrwałymi negocjacjami koalicyjnymi kanclerz Merkel spóźniła się z udzieleniem odpowiedzi na propozycje reform w UE prezydenta E. Macrona. Wprowadzono zaledwie kilka poprawek dotyczących europejskiej polityki obronnej i dyrektywy w sprawie delegowania pracowników. Ważniejsze tematy, w tym europejska polityka finansowa, są wciąż żywo debatowane. W obliczu obecnych trudności i silnych zastrzeżeń ze strony konserwatywnej części CDU i CSU dla polityki europejskiej rządu, wydaje się, że Merkel jest na dobrej drodze do osiągnięcia pragmatycznego kompromisu z Francją.

Cooperation between France and Germany is crucial for the future of the European Union. Slowed down by lengthy coalition negotiations in the aftermath of German elections, chancellor Merkel has been late to give an answer to reform proposals from president Macron. There have been a few improvements concerning European defence policy and the Posting of Workers Directive. More important topics, including European financial policy, are still being vividly debated. Aside from current difficulties and strong reservations from within Merkel’s conservative party, the way for a practicable compromise seems to be paved.
