W artykule zaprezentowane zostały wyniki analizy porównawczej wybranych sondaży nad poczuciem przynależności cywilizacyjnej Polaków oraz stereotypami Polaka i Europejczyka. Głównym kryterium wyboru sondaży był kontekst zachodnioeuropejski oraz europejskość traktowane jako podstawowy punkt odniesienia dla wyrażanego przez respondentów poczucia tożsamości narodowej. Analiza w warstwie teoretycznej odnosi się do modelu opinii publicznej w badaniu tożsamości narodowej w ujęciu Zbigniewa Bokszańskiego. Przeprowadzona analiza zawiera odpowiedzi na pytania o strukturę polskości, jej granice względem europejskości, poczucie swojskości i obcości z mieszkańcami Europy Zachodniej oraz tego, jak zjawiska te zmieniały się w ostatnich 20 latach.

The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of selected polls regarding the civilisational identity of Poles as well as the stereotypes of Poles and Europeans. The main criterion for the selection of the polls is the context of Western Europe and Europeanness treated as a basic point of reference for the sense of national identity expressed by the respondents. The theoretical analysis is based on the model of the public opinion in the study of national identity presented by Zbigniew Bokszański. The analysis provides answers to the questions regarding the structure of Polishness, its borders in relation to Europeanness, the sense of homeliness and strangeness towards the residents of Western Europe, and how these phenomena have changed in the last twenty years.

Przedmiotem recenzji jest książka „Antyczne techniki perswazyjne” (2019), piąty tom „Szkiców o antyku”, zredagowany przez Edytę Gryksę i Patrycję Matusiak. Recenzent przedstawia funkcjonowanie technik perswazyjnych w świecie grecko-rzymskim, wskazując na silne powiązania retoryki z życiem codziennym antyku – od sali sądowej po obóz wojenny. Opisany został związek współczesnych praktyk interpretacyjnych, przekonywania w świecie mediów, polityki oraz sztuk plastycznych i inscenizacyjnych, ze starożytnymi źródłami kultury europejskiej. Wreszcie autor omawia ważne dla humanistyki pojęcia interpretacji, mediatyzacji i tożsamości europejskiej.

“Antyczne techniki perswazyjne” (“Antique Persuasion Techniques,” 2019), volume five of “Szkice o antyku” (“Essays on the Antiquity”), edited by Edyta Gryksa and Patrycja Matusiak, is made subject of the review. The reviewer presents the functioning of persuasive techniques in the Greco-Roman world, pointing at strong connections of rhetoric with everyday life, from courtroom to military camp. The connection between the contemporary interpretive practices, convincing in the world of media, politics, arts, staging and the antique sources of culture is also communicated. Ultimately, the author examines the crucial terms of the humanities, such as interpretation, mediation, and European identity.

Przedmiotem tego eseju jest użycie metafory „miłości do Europy” w polskim dyskursie publicznym ostatnich dwóch dekad. Staram się odpowiedzieć na pytania, jakie funkcje ta metafora pełni, jakie nadaje rozumienia pojęciu Europa, jakie przypada jej miejsce w kontekście historycznym i politycznym. Aby ukazać wielość konkretyzacji „miłości do Europy”, przeprowadzam analizę semiotyczną, zwracając uwagę na opozycje „męskie/żeńskie”, „bogate/biedne”, „rozwinięte/zacofane”, „centralne/peryferyjne”. Esej ma na celu prezentację wybranych kulturowych rozumień pojęć „Europa” i „europejskość” w polskim dyskursie publicznym.

The meanings and functions of the “love of Europe” metaphor in Polish public discourse of the last two decades is the central subject of this essay. They are discerned by placing this metaphor in political and historical context. The author uses semiotic analysis especially the oppositions “male/female”, “rich/poor”, “developed/backward” and “central/peripheral” in order to expose the multiple levels of the “love of Europe” figure. The essay aims at demonstrating the selected cultural meanings of the notions “Europe” and “Europeanness” in Polish public discourse.

The basic thesis of the article is the conviction that the condition for an effective implementation of the formative function of humanistic education is reflection on the contemporary world, and especially on such disturbing and current problems as, for example, intercultural tensions, migrations and connected with them the refugee crisis. The analysis of texts addressing this topic in the Polish school may be a response to the ethical crisis of isolation from other people’s suffering and passivity towards evil, especially if the victims are people belonging to a different cultural or national community. Inspiration for such considerations can be found in reportages devoted to refugees and their situation.

Podstawową tezą artykułu jest przekonanie, że warunkiem skutecznego realizowania formacyjnej funkcji edukacji humanistycznej jest refleksja nad współczesnym światem, a szczególnie nad tak niepokojącymi i aktualnymi problemami, jak np. napięcia międzykulturowe, migracje i związany z nimi kryzys uchodźczy. Analiza w polskiej szkole tekstów podejmujących tę tematykę może być odpowiedzią na kryzys etyczny polegający na izolowaniu się od cudzego cierpienia i na bierności wobec zła, zwłaszcza jeśli ofiarami są ludzie należący do innej niż nasza wspólnoty kulturowej czy narodowej. Inspirację do takich rozważań można odnaleźć w reportażach poświęconych uchodźcom i ich sytuacji.
