Family notes made by Jakob Lubbe and Martin Rössler belong to the category of personal self-testimonies – sources which were partly written in the first person. They allow us to learn how various social roles (of a spouse, father, merchant, a member of a parish and the city community) played by both these stall-holders were perceived by them. The sources preserved in the chronicle of a Dominican Martin Gruneweg are of unique value for the examination of the history of Gdańsk at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Gruneweg, copying the notes made by Lubbe and Rössler, omitted all records which referred to accounting since they were incomprehensible to him. That is why for a long time Lubbe’s notes were wrongly referred to as a family chronicle. The analysis of the notes revealed that the fragments of the book copied by Gruneweg came from the so-called Geschäftsbuch – a trade book. The records made by Martin Rössler have not been thoroughly examined so far. Comparing the notes of both stall-holders allows us to associate their origin with contracting a marriage, which made it possible for them to join the town community, the guild and the neighbourhood. The writing of these records was halted by the death of a close relative or the death of the writer himself. The notes of both stall-holders constitute a kind of pragmatic self-testimony for the writers’ own use. They represent everyday worries and emotions of both citizens of Gdańsk along with the world of their values.
