The author discusses relations between the original and translation in terms of imaginary spaces. Target text is understood here as one of the possible images of the source text, from the perspective which could not be accessible to the original. In accordance with the concept presented here, artistic translation can be not so much reconstructed, as conceptually constructed, in the manner of a cubist object. Acts of creative reading are commented on by the author with examples of his own experimental translations from contemporary French poetry.

The article is devoted to meta-theoretical problems concerning the possibilities of an integrated description of experimental translation in various domains of artistic creation. A generał framework for discussion is provided by the latest meth- odological tendencies in the western European cultural transłation studies incłuding the creative turn” and the “outward turn” in the English-language “post-translation studies” of recent years. The material for analysis includes Clive Scott’s conceptual translations, Elise Aru’s translational assemblages, as well as Ewa Partum’s metapoetic installations and performances.

The article presents various forms of intersemiotic and intrasemiotic translations which use emoji signs, i.e. iconic characters employed in digital communication by users of popular Internet applications and platforms (e.g. Twitter, Facebook and Messenger). The use of emojis is becoming more and more widespread, as evidenced by the increasing number of text messages and works of art which consist exclusively of these characters. At the same time, attempts are being made to translate more extensive verbal texts (including literary works) into the nonverbal system of emojis. One of the feats such efforts have so far accomplished is an experimental translation of Carlo Collodi’s "Pinocchio" ("La storia di un burattino"), a classic of children’s literature, from Italian to emojitaliano (a system codified by the participants of the experiment), which was developed on Twitter and appeared in print in 2017. Emoji-based works of art have also found their way to art galleries. "The Garden of Emoji Delights", a triptych by Carla Gannis, is a conspicuous example of intrasemiotic translation (from a non-verbal code to another non-verbal code) involving Hieronymus Bosch’s celebrated painting. Such applications of emoji are associated with paradigmatic changes in the humanities, which are related to the digital, iconic and performative turns and to today’s remix culture (Lawrence Lessig, Lev Manovich).

The article presents a case study of the conceptual book Paint the Rock by Shiv Kotecha, which was translated into Polish using conceptual localizaton. The orig- inal is an unconventional “coloring book” that invites the reader to paint American male celebrities from memory. The Polish localization, Namaluj Popka, replaces these global household names with figures from the local popular imaginary. The authors describe the context of the original literary work, the translation process, the new context for reception in Poland, with a special focus on the role of the translator as the ambassador of new trends in literature and the creative aspects of experimental translation.

The article discusses the experimental translation of the classic of chil- dren’s literature — the Pinocchio (La storia di un burattino) by Carlo Collodi — from Italian into the artificially created language of the emoji signs. The translation was initially created on the Internet (Twitter platform), and then published in print in 2017. The issue of the translation was presented in the context of other translations of literature into emoji sings and experimental translation in general. This originally new-media translation illustrates the cultural transformations of modernity and can be understood as the expression of iconic (visual) and performative turn in humanities..
