Mimo iż hiszpański i portugalski należą do wspólnej grupy języków romańskich, nauka każdego z nich przysparza sporo problemów dla rodzimych użytkowników drugiego. Podobieństwa natury leksykalnej i gramatycznej ułatwiają rozumienie drugiego języka, będąc jednocześnie przeszkodą w momencie tworzenia wypowiedzi, z uwagi na popełniane kalki semantyczne i gramatyczne. Problem ten można zaobserwować w rejonach przygranicznych, których mieszkańcy posługują się językiem rodzimym i językiem sąsiada, oraz wśród studentów uczących się kilku języków romańskich. Fakt, iż żaden z uczonych języków nie jest dla nich językiem ojczystym tym bardziej utrudnia proces nauki. Najczęściej popełniane błędy wynikają z niewłaściwego zastosowania zasad gramatycznych, złego doboru słownictwa, stosowania false friends – słów, które istnieją w obu językach, ale mają odmienne znaczenie.

Aunque el español y el portugués son unas de las más parecidas entre las lenguas románicas, causan cierta confusión a la hora de estudiarlas para los hablantes de una u otra lengua. Las similitudes entre ambas en el campo lexical y gramatical facilitan la comprensión, siendo al mismo tiempo un obstáculo que complica expresarse correctamente, sin que los aprendices cometan calcos semánticos o errores gramaticales. Es un problema común tanto en las zonas de alto bilingüísmo como entre los estudiantes de filología, que estudian al mismo tiempo más que una lengua románica. El hecho de no ser hablante nativo de ninguna de dichas lenguas dificulta todavía más el proceso de aprendizaje. Los errores más frecuentes se deben a la inadecuada aplicación de reglas gramaticales o uso erróneo de palabras, así llamados falsos amigos, que existen en ambas lenguas, sin embargo tienen distinto significado.

In spite of the fact that the Spanish and Portuguese languages belong to the same group of the Romance languages, it is not easy to learn them for those who have already known one of them. The similarities in the lexical and grammatical nature of both languages facilitate the understanding the other one. At the same time, however, they can be a hindrance to express correctly in speech, due to the use of semantic and grammatical calques. This problem can be observed in border regions, where residents are usually bilingual using their native language as well as the language of the neighbouring country in which some grammar rules and expressions derived from their own language are applied incorrectly. The same phenomenon occurs when students study more than one Romance language. The fact that none of the languages is native to them makes the learning process even more difficult. The most common mistakes are made not only as a result of grammar misuse but also false friends-words that exist in both languages but have different meanings.
