With its specific way of functioning and network of interweaving interactions of various character and emotional intensity, the family is an environment where the process of a child’s socialization takes place, social personality develops and patterns of social roles are acquired. A family that malfunctions can trigger deviation mechanisms, thus considerably contributing to a child’s social maladjustment. Due to that, in case the criteria described by law are met, it is necessary to use specific assistance measures and interfere in a family’s autonomy, limit its parental authority and support it in fulfilling educational and socialization functions. Appointing a family assistant is one of the measures of limiting parental authority aimed at helping a family.

The study discusses models of social work and family assistance from the perspective of the liberal cultural paradigm. It opens the debate about the consequences of employing this paradigm for an individual, family, social work and family assistance, and the society as a whole. In this perspective, it discusses the issue of the place and importance of pedagogy in education, social work, and family assistance.

W literaturze przedmiotu wskazuje się̨, że najskuteczniejszą formą pomocy osobom marginalizowanym społecznie jest podejście aktywizujące z indywidualizacją świadczenia usług. Dlatego też zasadniczym celem asysty rodzinnej jest m.in. udzielanie pomocy w uruchamianiu odpowiednich sił i umiejętności w darzeniu do zmiany funkcjonowania rodziców, a tym samym do poprawy jakości ich rodzicielstwa i (re)integracji społecznej wszystkich członków rodziny. Przywracanie zdolności jednostek i grup społecznych do pełnego uczestnictwa w życiu społecznym jest zgodnie z ideą empowerment - kluczowego warunku efektywności pracy z rodziną. W artykule zaprezentowano standard pracy asystenta rodziny (przykład „dobrych praktyk”) oraz najważniejsze wnioski i rekomendacje wynikające z ewaluacji systemu pracy z rodziną z wieloma problemami w ramach asysty rodzinnej.

The relevant source literature shows that the activating approach combined with customized provision of services ensures the most effective form of assistance for socially marginalized persons. Therefore, one of the primary aims of family assistance is to provide help in activating appropriate resources and skills while striving to change the functioning of parents with a view of improving the quality of their parenthood and fostering social (re)integration of all family members. Restoring the ability of individuals and social groups to participate fully in social life is consistent with the idea of empowerment - the key requirement for an effective work with families. This article presents the working standards of the family assistant (an example of “good practices”) as well as key conclusions and recommendations from the evaluation of the system of working with multi-problem families under the family assistance scheme.
