Józef Bocheński was born on 30th August 1902. He graduated from the Secondary School in 1920 and immediately after the final exam (matura) he joined the 8th Ulhan (light cavalry) Regiment and took part in a final part of a Polish-Bolshevik war. After the war, in 1922, he joined studies in law at the University of Lwów and after two years he attended the University in Poznań in order to study political economy. These studies were interrupted in 1926 when Bocheński joined the Seminary in Poznań which he left when moving to the Dominican novitiate in Cracow. There he adopted names Innocenty Maria. After one year of a novitiate he was sent to philosophical studies at the University in Fribourg in Swizerland, he graduated in 1934 . Two years earlier however, he was ordained a priest and in 1936, along with Jan Salamucha, Franciszek Drewnowski and Bolesław Sobociński, he organised the so called Cracow Circle. After receiving a doctorate in theology he was appointed a professor of logic at Angelicum, and he officially remained there until 1940. In 1938 he got habilitation in philosophy at the Faculty of Theology at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Along with the Polish Corpus of Gen. Władysław Anders he took part in the Italian campaigne. He fought in the battle at Monte Cassino (May 1944). After the end of the Second World War he became a professor of philosophy at Fribourg University and remained at that position until the retirement (1945-1972). He occupied a position of a Dean of Faculty of Philosophy (1950-1952) and a Rector. There he initiated soviet studies which brought him recognition and political significance. He visited Poland in 1987 for the first time since he left in 1939. In the next year he was awarded doctorates honoris causa at the Jagiellonian University and at the Academy of Catholic Theology (ATK) in Warsaw. Moreover, during his emigration he co-operated regularly with the Polish University Abroad established in Londyn. He died in Fribourg on 8th February 1995. During his lifetime Józef Bocheński was changing philosopical schools and views. In his youth he was a Kantian, next, he „converted” to neo-Thomism in its most traditional (handbook and essential) version, which actually was more Aristotelian than Thomistic. The next step was an attempt to „modernise” this sort of Thomism by tools of mathematical logic in order to make Thomas - as Bocheński said himself - no longer his „guru”. In the result, Bocheński ceased to explore the problems and style of classical philosophy in favour of analytical mode of philosophying. He himself divided his scientific work into four periods distinguished as follows, according to interest and passions (and views as well) dominated in particular time: 1) neo-Thomistic (1934–1940), 2) historical- logical (1945–1955) 3) sovietological (1955–1970) 4) systematical- logical (1970–1995).
Najważniejsze argumenty krytyczne wobec neopozytywizmu miały miejsce ze strony dwóch wielkich nurtów filozofii XX wieku: realizmu krytycznego (K.R. Popper) i filozofii analitycznej (G.E. Moore, B. Russel, L. Wittgenstein).
An extensive Polish anthology Logic and Language, for which Jerzy Pelc selected and translated a number of papers, has been for many years an invaluable resource in teaching and research. It has provided a helpful and instructive picture of some essential debates within analytic philosophy. However, in addition to several crucial essays, which firmly belong to the core texts of this tradition, the anthology includes also marginal and insignificant papers. And what is even more surprising, Pelc has passed over contributions of a few hugely influential philosophers (G. E. Moore, L. Wittgenstein, W. V. Quine, J. L. Austin, and H. P. Grice), and the justification of his selection given in the preface to the collection is incomplete and far from convincing.

The paper is a critical analysis of fundamental assumptions for the empirical research methodology in the jurisprudence field. It is aimed to compare the profile of empirical methodology with jurisprudence-dominant analytic philosophy. This is archived through a) examining the basic profile of the positivist attitude of a researcher along with assumptions integrating empiricism, which derives from the positivist methodology, into different philosophies of the law which specifically appeal to the naturalism of the legal phenomenon; next b) detailing characteristic features of empirical methods which take jurisprudence specifics into account; and finally c) coming to a set of conclusions concerning the success of research conducted this way in the jurisprudence field.
The aim of this article was the reconstruction and critical analysis of the concept of religion, faith and theology that can be extracted from selected works of Bochenski, coming mainly from an analytical period of his activity. Religion is a complex phenomenon for Bochenski. There are the pre-analytical (relation to the Absolute, the virtue of justice, or the form of answers to existential questions) and the analytical concept of religion (system of statements, analyzed for logical correctness, meaning and communication capabilities). The reference point is Christianity as a religion based on the dogmatic and ethical statements. Faith is primarily an act of reason, recognizing sentence as true under the pressure of the will. The object of faith is the system of sentences revealed by God and given by a religious institution. There is no evidence in faith, but only the respective reason. The main challenge becomes the justification of the basic dogma on the road of reductive inference (hypothesis religious). Faith, religious experience and reasoning are a way to know God. He revised his concept of faith, which has two levels: the base (minimum and consistent set of basic statements with the literal sense) and the superstructure (symbolic representation of basic sentences). The task of theology is axiomatization of sentences, which are the subject of faith. Theology must be linked to the logic, because it is possible then to avoid the errors of reasoning and precise its practice. Theology is therefore a rationalization of faith, studying the sources of revelation, fixing set of revealed sentences, clarification and explanation of the truths of faith. Bochenski rejected the so-called negative theology and stressed a critical role of philosophy in theology. He also advocated the creation of a national theology.

The article is a metaphilosophical and metatheoretical discussion relating to the theory of law pursued in the mainstream of the classical project of analysis. The purpose of these remarks is to show the challenges which philosophical pragmatism, and especially analytical pragmatism, poses to classical analysis. The first part of the text is devoted to the presentation of the mainstream of postwar Polish law theory as the implementation of the analysis program, with the conception of Z. Ziembinski serving as an example. The next part characterizes analytical pragmatism of R. Brandom and the challenges addressed to such research programs as classical analysis. The last part examines philosophical benefits that classical analysis could obtain by embracing the challenges of analytical pragmatism. These include the ability to overcome the cognitive dualism, better justification of rationality and extending the anthropological perspective.

The following paper deals with the Polish discussion of the principle of non-contradiction from the perspective of the lack of official participation of Jan Łukasiewicz and Stanisław Jaśkowski. These philosophers were representatives of the analytic tradition, and their pioneering works on the concept of (non-)contradiction are nowadays considered foundational to this field of research. The aim of this paper is to point out those features of the Polish discussion (as well as its later summaries) that contributed to this exclusion. The conclusions reached are not only local in nature, but also provide more important metaphilosophical remarks.

The article presents the conception of analytical hermeneutics as a theory and methodology of text interpretation developed on the grounds of analytical philosophy. In the first part, the author recalls selected definitions of hermeneutics and its most important postulates, as well as the method of creative interpretation formulated by Tadeusz Kotarbiński. The second section presents examples of interpretations taken from Marian Przełęcki’s Lektury platońskie [Readings in Plato], which were used to describe selected interpretative tools of analytical hermeneutics. The third part contains a comparison of analytical hermeneutics with logical and philological hermeneutics defined by Bogusław Wolniewicz. The summary discusses selected aspects of analytical hermeneutics as a philosophical, methodological, social and didactic program.
The notion of ethics has been developed by Bocheński in four areas: 1. Ethics is a normative science regarding human behaviour. Its scientific character means a „systematic research on a particular part of reality”. In the result of its normativity it „not only describes object but also indicates what this object should be like”. When speaks of human behaviour it „makes research on this set of acts who derive consciously (voluntarily) from human free will”. 2. Ethics as a normative science makes research and establishes general goal of human activity and then it considers, from the psychological point of view, a nature of human act which should be an act of realisation of a goal. In this way ethics works out the problem of ethical norm, a principle which should be followed to fulfill human act in order to achieve a goal proper to human being. Additionally, when ethics is grounded in Christian Revelation we may apply the matter of grace as supernatural support from God in fulfilling ethically good human act. 3. „There are two areas of each properly constructed ethics”. The first, in a theoretical way considers five sets of problems: the general goal of human act, the structure of human act, the problem of moral norms, the theory of character and the subject of God’s grace. The aim of the second area is practical analysis of particular features of human character, we understand them as „steady dispo-sition toward proceeding human act easily and energetic” according to a moral norm. 4. Ethics understood in that way can be atrributed to each human being. Hence, each men should adopt and cultivate in himself all properties and ethical norms. „Each human being should posses entirely human and Christian character”. 5. Individual human life shows that a teacher suppose to be equippped in some properties more than a merchant. For that reason, even there exists unity in ethics in general, we may speak of particular ethics. They consists of general ethics and on that ground they develop further principles in particular domains. In the result there may exist business ethics, academic ethics, ethics of prie-sthood, political ethics and military one.
Karol Frenkel took as the object of his research the inner need to come to terms with the tradition in which he had been brought up. He developed an original conception of independent ethics. In his doctoral thesis, he analysed two competing ethical systems formulated by David Hume and Arthur Schopenhauer, which sought ethical determinants in the affective sphere. These proposals proved unsatisfactory to him, which is why he proposed his own solution, derived from his understanding of the concept of morality. From today’s perspective, it was the first attempt to formulate a concept of analytic ethics, which chronologically speaking preceded the analogous solutions proposed by George Moore in Principia Ethica.

The article is diverse on two parts. In the first part, the author refers assumptions of Bohdan Chwedeńczuk book, “Przekonania religijne” [Religious Beliefs] that was devoted to justify the thesis according to which religious statements are meaningless. He emphasizes a role of so called Hume Requirement that was postulated as a demarcation line between meaningful and meaningless words in Chwedeńczuk argumentation chain. Next he indicates main objections against the Requirement which were considered by Chweden czuk. The second part of the article is a discussion with critiques that were emerging after publishing of “Przekonania”. Such philosophers as J. J. Jadacki, M. Przełęcki, K. Kondrat, M. Pawliszyn, W. Wolan czyk and I. Ziemin ski formulated a number of arguments against the thesis about meaninglessness of religious statements. Author shows that Jadacki, Przełęcki and Ziemin ski presented compelling arguments which cannot be undermine basing on the “Przekonania” text, thus these objections must be included if the Chweden czuk’s theory could be considered as justified. Arguments formulated by Kondrat and Wolan czyk are possible to refute and Pawliszyn’s critique is pointless.
The aim of this article is to present a characterization of Christian philosophy in terms of the notion of a research tradition. Since the work of Larry Laudan, it has been thought that the latter notion could prove useful for shedding light on the idea of Christian philosophy. To this end, the author first introduces the key concept of a ‘research tradition,’ and then proceeds to analyse the notion of an ‘image of the world,’ understood as something invariably associated with specific research traditions. The next step is the construction of a definition of Christian philosophy as a research tradition in project-based terms. The author sets out to demonstrate that Christian philosophy, as such a tradition, is both pluralistic and democratized. In conclusion, several higher-order proposals are formulated with respect to the right method for pursuing Christian philosophy. In particular, the approach adopted should be one oriented towards possibilities of discussion: i.e. a non-dictatorial game unfolding with the participation of representatives from various research traditions who endorse different images of the world.

Jest on swoistym testamentem filozoficznym autora Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy, w którym przedstawia swoją wizję filozofii jako dziedziny humanistycznej.

This text was delivered by Williams as a lecture to The Royal Institute of Philosophy on 23 February 2000, three years before Williams` passing. It can be understood as a philosophical testament of the author of Ethics and The Limits of Philosophy, in which he presents his vision of philosophy as a humanistic discipline. According to Williams there are serious reasons supporting the rejection of extreme metaphilosophical positions such as scientism, relativism or pragmatism. Advocates of those standpoints misconceive the essential differences between philosophy and science, and as a consequence they are unable to formulate an outlook that would allow us to acquire a meaningful understanding of ourselves and of our various intellectual and practical activities. The basic mistake here is to ignore the fact that science has a theory of error, which allows us to interpret its historical development as a process motivated by epistemic reasons, while philosophical concepts also undergo various non-epistemic determinations, especially determination by history and culture. Williams does not think that it is a sufficient reason to reject philosophy. Science may be superior to philosophy in cognitive aspects; however, it is unable to provide us with a rich self-understanding, a task that can and should be the aim of philosophy, if only we abandon attempts to liken it to science and focus on the most important facts about human beings—mainly, that we are not purely rational intelligences, but flesh-and-blood beings shaped by our biology, psychology, history and culture, beings that have many complex needs that can`t be reduced to purely cognitive ones.

This is a review article of a recently published guide to the philosophy of language, Przewodnik po filozofii języka (J. Odrowąż-Sypniewska (ed.), Wydawnictwo WAM, Kraków 2016). The article presents this publication against a background of other monographs and guides devoted to the topic of the contemporary philosophy of language which have been published in English. It aims at highlighting the main issues discussed by this philosophy, as well as its relation to linguistics.
The article discusses the characteristics of a philosophical and cultural dispute with metaphysics and about metaphysics itself. The criticism of metaphysics and its revival in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is discussed here. In the first part, the most important philosophical directions dealing with issues of metaphysics are presented: metaphysical idealism, anti-metaphysical positivism and neo-positivism, analytic philosophy versus metaphysics on the example of L. Wittgenstein, the revision of the metaphysical tradition and new investigations in metaphysics. The second part of the article concerns the picture of natural metaphysics including the mathematical-empirical method of researching the world. In the conclusion of the article, a thesis is put forward on searching for new metaphysics which will include a wider sphere of rationality and existential and spiritual experience.
