Autor przedstawia koncepcję filtra eksplanacyjnego, sformułowaną przez zwolennika teorii inteligentnego projektu - Williama A. Dembskiego. Filtr ma służyć jako uniwersalne narzędzie wykrywania projektu, będącego nie tylko dziełem istot ludzkich, ale także wszelkich innych istot inteligentnych. Filtr ma mieć zastosowanie nawet na gruncie takich nauk przyrodniczych, jak biologia czy kosmologia. Autor odpowiada również na niektóre zarzuty skierowane pod adresem koncepcji Dembskiego.

Author presents the explanatory filter concept formulated by intelligent design theory proponent William A. Dembski. The filter is intended to be an universal instrument for detecting design that is not only the work of human beings but also of other intelligent entities. The filter is supposed to be applicable even to such fields of natural science as biology and cosmology. Author replies also to some objections to Dembski’s concept.

Artykuł stanowi analizę krytyczną koncepcji filtra eksplanacyjnego, zaprezentowanej przez Williama Dembskiego w książce The Design Inference. Filtr jest rozumiany jako formalizacja procedury prowadzącej do wykrycia, czy dane zdarzenie jest zaprojektowane poprzez zastosowanie reguł rządzących wyborem wzajemnie się wykluczających hipotez: regularności, przypadku i projektu. Autorzy odnoszą się do pojęcia szansy hipotezy rozumianej jako prawdopodobieństwo, jakie ta hipoteza nadaje zdarzeniom ,i argumentują, że w odróżnieniu od hipotez przypadku i regularności, szansa hipotezy projektu nigdy nie jest brana przez Dembskiego pod uwagę. Autorzy krytykują również klasyfikację wymienionych hipotez zaproponowaną w The Design Inference.

The article is a critical analysis of the explanatory filter concept presented by William Dembski in his book The Design Inference. The filter is understood as formalization of the procedure leading to detection whether a given event is designed. The procedure is based on application of the rules that determine the choice between mutually exclusive hypotheses: Regularity, Chance and Design. Authors refer to the notion of likelihood of a hypothesis understood as the probability that hypothesis confers on observations. They argue that, in contrast to the likelihood of Chance and Regularity hypotheses, Dembski never takes the likelihood of Design hypothesis into consideration. Authors also criticize classification of above mentioned hypotheses proposed in The Design Inference.

Autor, podając przykłady ze świata zwierząt i analizując domniemane świadectwa istnienia istot pozaziemskich, dowodzi, że teoria inteligentnego projektu nie jest odrzucana współcześnie przez wzgląd na światopoglądowe uprzedzenia społeczności naukowców (jak twierdzą zwolennicy tej teorii), lecz dlatego, że istnieją przekonujące wyjaśnienia alternatywne.

Invoking examples from the animal world and analyzing purported evidence of existence of extraterrestrials, author argues that intelligent design theory is not presently rejected because of the scientific community prejudices (as proponents of this theory claim), but because there exist plausible alternative explanations.
