Opracowanie dotyczy konkurencyjności i innowacyjności przedsiębiorstw jako podstawowych determinant ich rozwoju, a tym samym rozwoju gospodarek w ogóle. Wychodząc z założenia, że konkurencyjność firm zależy w dużym stopniu od ich innowacyjności, w opracowaniu dużo miejsca poświęcono uwarunkowaniom innowacyjności i metodom oceny innowacyjności firm i gospodarek. Analizowano czynniki wewnętrzne przedsiębiorstwa, sprzyjające powstawaniu innowacji, jak też czynniki zewnętrzne, takie jak kondycja gospodarki, wolność gospodarcza oraz uwarunkowania instytucjonalne. Przedstawiono różne podejścia i definicje innowacyjności i przedsiębiorczości w historii ekonomii, a także odniesiono się do warunków, które musi spełnić całe społeczeństwo, aby następował rozwój innowacji. Jest to związane z koniecznością przeprowadzenia reformy kulturowej, całkowitego i bezwarunkowego nastawienia na innowacje. Jest to zadanie bardzo trudne z powodu niekorzystnych zmian demograficznych społeczeństwa polskiego. Przeciwwagą niekorzystnych zmian w starzejącym się społeczeństwie może stać się wysoki, specjalistyczny poziom wykształcenia młodego pokolenia.

The study concerns enterprises’ competitiveness and innovativeness as the basic determinants of their development and, thus, development of economies in general. Assuming that firm’s competitiveness largely depends on their innovativeness, in her study, the author devoted much of room to the determinants of innovativeness and methods of assessment of innovativeness of firms and economies. She analysed the enterprise’s internal factors conducive to emergence of innovation as well as external factors such as the economy’s condition, economic freedom and institutional determinants. She presented various approaches to and definitions of innovativeness and entrepreneurship in the history of economics as well as referred to the conditions that must be met the entire society to achieve development of innovation. This is connected with the necessity to carry out a cultural reform, the complete and unconditional attitude towards innovation. This is a very difficult task due to the unfavourable demographic changes of the Polish society. A counterbalance for the unfavourable changes in the ageing society may be a high, specialist level of education of the young generation.
