Given their potential for direct and individual identification of people, fingerprints are recognised as powerful evidence with unquestionable identification value. Fingerprints are developed using physical, chemical, physicochemical and biological methods. Application of a method and its effectiveness depend, e.g. on the kind of substance forming the print, surface type and features, development conditions and time span. Under laboratory conditions, the fingerprint examiner attempts to detect prints on various surfaces, using chemical methods. Very often, fingerprints are recovered from absorbent surfaces, called (with good reason) ‘difficult surfaces’, such as anonymous letters, invoices, bills, bank cheques. These surfaces have a loose, porous, capillary internal structure, which allows liquid components of eccrine and sebaceous gland secretions to be gradually absorbed. To detect fingerprints on absorbent surfaces, used are chemical methods based on solutions of DFO, 1,2‑IND, ninhydrin, RTX or zinc chloride. Especially noteworthy is 1,2‑IND, which has this advantage over comparable methods that its application does not leave the surface permanently stained or contaminated and prevents the writing substance from being washed away. Currently investigated for fingerprint visualisation is a plant reagent called genipin. This method involves genipin solution reacting with amino acids contained in eccrine and sebaceous gland secretions depositing finger marks. The developed blue and purple images are not only visible in daylight, but are also highly fluorescent. Although the genipin‑based method is not totally new, it still has not been introduced into the Polish laboratory practice.
A reliable dating of forensic traces revealed at the crime scenes is still one of the most challenging issues of forensic science. While there are lot of proprietary research and development methods being promoted and applied within various fields of forensic research, the issue in question remains largely unresolved and as such justifies an evaluation. As fingerprints and bloodstains are nowadays one of the most important types of forensic traces often revealed at crime scenes worldwide and utilized in practice for human identification purposes, a descriptive method has been applied to present current research paths and a potential to provide long awaited resolution of the issue in question. A review of research approaches undertaken by various forensic scientists and joint research teams leads to the conclusion a progress has been achieved through utilization of both new research concepts and application of fast evolving and advancing technologies, yet no scientifically proven ultimate solutions have been presented. This issue remains controversial and still unresolved despite numerous attempts to establish both commonly agreed and reliable markers or characteristics corresponding to a complex issue of ageing of forensic traces, as there are various internal and external factors impacting the process in question.
The paper deals with the problem of usability of traces of fingerprints in the practice of law enforcement organs. The author pays particular attention to this type of traces as individually typical of each human being, reminding that they are traces which each offender leaves on the scene of crime. Their usability does not only allow channeling the identification of the offender who has left the trace, but also offers the possibility of identification of the corpse that cannot be identified upon external examination for different reasons (e.g. dismemberment of the corpse). Moreover, the author draws attention to the diminishing of the possibility of taking advantage of dactyloscopy in fighting crime, which followed as a result of changes to the Act of Police in the part relating to systematic enriching the collections of fingerprint files with copies of individual fingers (fingertips) used in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). The paper is complemented with an illustration of the external appearance of a deceased person’s face, which excludes any possibility of identification of the corpse, and instances of positive dactyloscopic experts’ assessment.
The EURODAC Regulation establishes the database of the fingerprints of asylum seekers. In 2015, the new EURODAC Regulation came in force and some basic concepts that were not in the previous regulation have been changed. The article analyzes the responses to the new EURODAC Regulation from UNHCR and the Commission and the threats that this new regulation is creating. This article aims to find out whether the changes introduced in the new EURODAC will bring potential discrimination concerns and whether asylum seekers are treated as potential criminals and therefore causing stigmatization of those groups of people in society. The article gives an overview of the EURODAC database, fingerprinting and biometric systems, and comparison of old and new EURODAC regulation. The full assessment of the application of the regulation can be done after it has been in force for some time
1,8-diazafluoren-9-one (DFO) is a sensitive luminescent probe targeting α-amino acids. The study described herein exploited its physicochemical properties to form DFO/PVA polymer films. As a result, materials with stable and reactive DFO were obtained. Spectroscopic analysis of the formed films showed that the films with the highest concentration of DFO exhibited the highest reactivity. Novel materials in the form of thin DFO/PVA films with potential applications for revealing fingerprints on non-porous surfaces were obtained.

1,8-diazafluoren-9-on (DFO) to czuła sonda luminescencyjna ukierunkowana na α-aminokwasy.
The continuous development of methods of trace visualization entailed the development of new, specialized trace registration devices. In recent years, the TrasoScan System for registration and processing of forensic traces: traseological traces, fingerprints or documents has appeared on the forensic market. Currently, this device is most often applied to traseological examinations. Notwithstanding the above, it can be successfully used to register fingerprints on dactyloscopic films, silicone casts, those secured together with a surface, or traces revealed by chemical methods. This article presents the broad spectrum of TrasoScan’s capabilities for registering fingerprints of various types.

Fingerprints disclosed by cyanoacrylate on non-absorbent substrates, in order to improve readability, require additional contrasting fluorescent dyes. Nile Red is one of them. Its effectiveness was tested under conditions similar to those of daily laboratory practice. The highest Nile Red fluorescence occurred in an excitation light of blue-green and a wavelength of 505nm. Spectral analysis showed that the emission of light oscillates in the wavelength of about 630nm. In order to cut off the light, longpass edge filters of the colours yellow, orange or red can be used. Filter selection depends on the characteristics of the substrate and can be chosen empirically. Nile Red fluorescence does not change over a longer period of time, which allows for the registration of fingerprints to be performed within a time convenient for the testing, without fear of losing their ąuality. Nile Red may be an alternative to other fluorescent dyes used for visualization in fingerprint testing.
Lumicyano is a new reagent used to reveal fingermarks on non-porous and semi-porous surfaces. It can be applied in trace visualization process instead of cyanoacrylate and fluorescent dyes (in the case of nonabsorbent surfaces) or cyanoacrylate and dactyloscopic powders (in the case of semi-porous surfaces). Fingerprints are revealed in the traditional cyanoacrylate fuming chambers. The present work, the effectiveness of Lumicyano was investigated, in comparison to previously used sequences of laboratory techniques, i.e. cyanoacrylate + Basic Yellow 40 and cyanoacrylate + Black Ruby dactyloscopic powder.

Lumicyano jest nowym środkiem do ujawniania śladów linii papilarnych na podłożach niechłonnych i semiporowatych. Można go stosować w procesie wizualizacji śladów – zamiast cyjanoakrylanu i barwników fluorescencyjnych (w przypadku podłoży niechłonnych) lub cyjanoakrylanu i proszków daktyloskopijnych (w przypadku podłoży semiporowatych). Podczas ujawniania śladów linii papilarnych wykorzystuje się tradycyjne komory cyjanoakrylowe. W niniejszej pracy sprawdzono efektywność działania Lumicyano w odniesieniu do dotychczas stosowanych w praktyce laboratoryjnej sekwencji technik badawczych: cyjanoakrylanu i Basic Yellow 40 oraz cyjanoakrylanu i proszku daktyloskopijnego Black Ruby.
Dactyloscopy as a method of human identification has, at the end of the second decade of the 21st century, an established, strong position, demonstrating itself in the whole range of tools available to law enforcement authorities to support investigations. Thanks to the development and popularization of modern biometric technologies, dactyloscopy is increasingly entering the sphere of non-police applications, used by millions of people every day, e.g. logging into electronic banking or unlocking access to smartphones with a finger. In many cultures, the interest in finger and hand skin ridges goes back thousands of years. Initially, it concerned an intentional creative process in the form of rock drawings, but with time, features were noticed in fingerprints that allow to distinguish and identify people. This process began in China more than two thousand years ago, while Europeans did not pay attention to fingerprints until the 17th century. However, it was not until the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that a real revolution has begun, which changed the ability to verify human identity.

Zainteresowanie człowieka listewkami skórnymi palców i dłoni w wielu kulturach sięga przeszłości odległej o tysiące lat.
The article presents the results of research aimed at determining the extent to which ozone used for disinfecting rooms affects the possibility of developing fingerprints on paper using the DFO method. A sudden increase in COVID-19 cases has placed the focus on disinfection techniques for user safety. It is also becoming important to ensure the safety of parcels addressed to various recipients by inactivating pathogens, while maintaining the possibility of examination that can identify the sender, which is important from the point of view of forensics. Ozonation is a disinfection technique that has been used for many years, in particular for water treatment or in the food industry. The experiments were carried out in rooms with a cubature of approx. 20 m3 using an ozone generator available on the market. The obtained ozone gas concentration did not exceed 10 ppm. The conducted research confirmed that the traces of fingerprints left on xerographic paper placed in a room subjected to ozonation in a concentration not exceeding 10 ppm are not damaged and can be successfully developed with the DFO method.

Police Teams Dealing with Undetected Crime, commonly referred to as the X Archives, operate within the voivodship police headquarters. They accumulate the most experienced officers and deal with the most serious crimes from the past, mainly the murders whose perpetrators have not been detected so far. The teams of several people make a thorough analysis of the acts of undetected crimes, they reach sources of information and use the latest achievements of forensic science. Two databases are particularly useful, i.e. AFIS and DNA. For this reason, the most attention has been given to them.

Kilkuosobowe zespoły dokonują wnikliwej analizy akt niewykrytych przestępstw, docierają do źródeł informacji i wykorzystują najnowsze osiągnięcia kryminalistyki.
Biometric data are typically used for the purposes of unique identification of a person. However, recent research suggests that biometric data gathered for the purpose of identification can be analysed for extraction of additional information. This augments indicative value of biometric data. This paper illustrates the range of augmented indicative values of the data as well as identifies crucial factors that contribute to increased vulnerability of data subjects.
