This article discusses how Divine Revelation is understood at the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology. After presenting the significance of the reflection on the subject of Revelation, the article presents the most important characteristics of our reflection on this subject typical of the group of theologians associated with John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. This includes their personalistic understanding of Divine Revelation, the meaning of Divine Revelation in the theological interpretation of religion and their comprehension of Revelation’s credibility.
J. Ratzinger-Benedict XVI relates theological cognition to following Jesus and going in His footsteps. He emphasizes the inseparable, mutual, servant-like relationship between academic theology and Christian praxis, Christological hermeneutics with the existential basis of faith. Intellectual and spiritual understanding of the mystery of Jesus depends on intimacy with Him and grows on this path: only the Son can show the Father because he knows Him in a way that defines his existence as the Son. The eternal inter-Trinitarian conversation with the Father – the prayer of the Son, His sonship-obedience – finds its corporal expression in history, and the humanity of Jesus, whose culmination is the cross, remains His prayer. The earthly life, and finally the Passover of Jesus, introduces into the human, vague concept of God the experience of the loving Father, thus making the course of history definitively meaningful and fulfilling, and the faith legitimate. Ratzinger defends Christology as a conceptual understanding of the truth of the Gospel, the depth and integrity of which Christology guards and to which it refers. Disregarding in faith the cognitive achievements and heritage of systematic theology leads to depriving faith of its most important contents, without which it starts to look in the dark for justifications which are subjective as well as fuzzy.
This article discusses the understanding of Divine Revelation within the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology. After presenting the significance of the reflection on the category of Revelation, the article presents the most important characteristics of the reflection on this category typical of the group of theologians associated with John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, i.e. the personalist understanding of Divine Revelation, the meaning of Divine Revelation in the theological interpretation of religion and the comprehension of the Revelation’s credibility.

Christianity, and the Christian faith, seems to be losing when confronted with scientific reason and scientific certainty. Christianity needs new arguments for the epistemological seriousness of its faith. Those could be found in Joseph Ratzinger’s writings, providing new insights into fundamental theology. The subject of faith as an element that is crucial to him (and to Christianity) pervades all his works. This paper aims at proving that Ratzinger has worked out an original epistemological way of defending the Christian faith. It is an attempt to recreate his argument on the basis of his entire intellectual output. The present research leads to the conclusion that Ratzinger’s way of argumentation is quite unique. In classical fundamental theology, the Christian faith (comprehended mostly as an individual act of faith) is placed at its end point, while in Ratzinger’s fundamental theology, faith (understood mostly as a historical and communal act) is practically a point of departure. From the beginning of his reasoning Ratzinger (due to his meta-faith perspective) persuades that the Christian faith is epistemologically very serious. Faith may not only manifest its presence alongside other serious attitudes to reality, but also be capable of demonstrating its foundation, rationality, originality, uniqueness, and even absoluteness (definitiveness).
Faith in Jesus' resurrection is expressed in multiple ways in New Testament. Among them, of special meaning are the so-called faith formulas, in which the truth on the resurrection is passed on as a part of the Christian creed. The author of the present article took on the study and comparison of the faith formulas of three different kinds: one simple monopartite and two more elaborated bi-partite formulas, 1 Cor 15,3-5 and Rom 1,3-4. He pursued his research in the fundamental-theological perspective, searching for the conclusions regarding the reliability of the formulas and their role in the faith transmission. The analysis made by the author demonstrated that faith in the resurrection very quickly took a specific form in which the truth was expressed in unchangeable and independent manner, a sui generis canon. Additionally, the study allows to claim that already at the very early stage the transmission of faith in Christ's resurrection is connected with a deep theological reflection that interprets the preceding events in light of the resurrection. Ultimately, one can state that the analyzed formulas witness to the fact that for Jesus' disciples faith in the resurrection became “the new beginning” in the process of discovering His identity.

The article discusses the issue of research methodology in the field of fundamental ecclesiology. The author draws attention to the importance and need to update the via ascendens method, especially its variants, which examine aspects of the life of the Church. Taking Latin America as an example, he analyses five selected aspect of the Church’s life from within in relation to ecumenism and non-Christian religions, to religiously indifferent and atheism, and in relation to issues concerning social life and culture. By using SWOT heuristic tools, he discusses their exemplary strong and weak aspects, including opportunities and threats. In the last part, taking into account the Latin American ecclesial experience, the author, first, indicates the need to broaden the subject of fundamental theology concerning the problem of the unfulfilled expectations of those who leave the Church. Next, he stresses the importance of carrying out the mission as the source and purpose of theological research. Finally, he draws attention to the fact, that there are important questions in theology, which concern different social groups.

Artykuł porusza zagadnienie metodologii badań eklezjologii fundamentalnej. Autor zwraca uwagę na wartość i potrzebę uaktualnienia metody via ascendens, zwłaszcza jej odmiany, która bada przejawy życia Kościoła. Na przykładzie Ameryki Łacińskiej opisuje pięć wybranych aspektów życia Kościoła od wewnątrz: ekumenizm, stosunek do religii niechrześcijańskich, obojętnych religijnie i do ateizmu oraz do życia społecznego i kultur. Za pomocą narzędzia heurystyczne SWOT omawia ich przykładowe mocne i słabe strony, możliwości i zagrożenia. W ostatniej części, uwzględniając doświadczenie Kościoła w Ameryce Łacińskiej, sygnalizuje potrzebę poszerzenia przedmiotu teologii fundamentalnej o niespełnione oczekiwania tych, którzy pozostawiają Kościół; podkreśla znaczenie wykonywania misji jako źródło i cel badań teologicznych; zwraca uwagę na rangę w teologii kwestii nurtujących różne grupy społeczne.
The Joseph's Ratzinger's theological thought is for the contemporary theology one of important datum points. Simultaneously we can today declare that the thought of the German Theologian is enough accessible, that it is possible to elaborate generally and critically single themes presented in his theological heritage. The author of the present article undertook one elaboration of key-problems for the fundamental theological reflection: how the German theologian seized the problem of the credibility of the Church. This theme did not find the general and systematic elaboration in the J. Ratzinger's publications, and simultaneously the analysis of his thought indicates that behind the singular elaborations about the partial character hides the certain determined conception of the credibility of the Church. The author of the present article decided to show this conception talking over following problems: conditions defining the possibility of the reflection over the problem of the reliability of the Church, the bond of the Church with the Person of Christ (the historic dimension of the reliability of the Church), features decisive about the reliability of Church community in her current existence.

The article explores how Personalist Philosophy can be helpful for Theology by focusing on the concrete topic of the body. The renewed philosophical interest in the body is important for Christian Theology inasmuch as the latter is centered on the concreteness of the Incarnation. The article follows Gabriel Marcel’s approach as a guideline to review the understanding of the body proper to Personalism. In this approach, the body is seen as the person’s relational presence in the world and among others and as the openness of the person towards transcendence. The richness of this approach is explored in three important areas of dogmatic theology: Christology, Sacramentology, and the Theology of Creation. The article exemplifies the circularity between Philosophy and Theology in the concrete topic of the body.
In the article, the author analyzes the contemporary defense of Christianity and the civilization founded on it. It defines basic concepts such as apology and apologetics, shows their originality and transitivity, also points to the most important trends/trends of contemporary apology/apologetics and methods used by apologists.
There are two purposes of this article: the first one - to clarify the meaning of the term ‘credibility of the Church in contemporary Poland’ from a theological perspective, and the second one - to describe the basic signs of such credibility and the difficulties they are facing. The article consists of three parts and a conclusion. The first part deals with the theological understanding of the Church’s credibility in contemporary Poland in the light of new researches and inspirations offered by Joseph Ratzinger’s ecclesiology and by the book Oblicza Kościoła katolickiego w Polsce. 1050. rocznicaChrztu [Features of the Catholic Church in Poland. The 1050th Anniversary of the Christening] (ed. by J. Mastej, K. Kaucha, P. Borto, Lublin 2016). The second part is focused on the signs of the Church’s credibility in Poland (sign of Peter, of the Apostolic Collegium, of unity, of holiness, of universality, of apostolicity, agapetological, praxeological, martyriological, and culture-creative), which started to be described about 25 years ago by Rev. Marian Rusecki, who was co-founder and the most excellent representative of the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology. The third part presents some new signs of the Church’s credibility in Poland according to the author of the article (charitable, staurological, resurrectional, paschal, anthropological-vocational, of freedom, of the priority of the Spirit and spiritual life, of peace and reconciliation, of protest, of the faith’s pure- ness). In the conclusion the author underlines the values of the semeiological method in describing and testing the credibility of the Church in contemporary Poland.
Tis article discusses the history of apologetics and fundamental theology as they have been taught in the Diocese of Siedlce’s Major Seminary since its founding in 1819 to the present day. Te author refers to historical sources and works in order to present pro-fles of the professors who taught these subjects, the trajectories of their academic careers, their teaching styles, as well as their academic achievements. Tis article also presents the textbooks and other materials that have been used in the seminary to teach these two disciplines that employ diferent methodological approaches but have the same academic aim, which is to study the credibility of Divine Revelation, meaning the fact that God ex-ists, His nature, and how He conveys Himself and remains within the Church.
Academic research in the field of ecclesiology has been conducted at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (CUL) from the beginning of its existence, among others, in the Department of Fundamental Theology headed in 1918 by Rev. Piotr Kremer. Research intensified after the creation of the second Department of Fundamental Theology—Ecclesiology (on June 23, 1958), which in the years 1964–91 was headed by Rev. Stanisław Nagy (Cardinal since 2003). Along with this, the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology developed, whose most prominent contributor was Rev. Marian Rusecki. The aim of this article is to present the achievements of the Lublin center (authors, works, research problems, its development) in the field of ecclesiology. The article will not repeat the contents of other articles included in this volume but will be composed of the following sections: (1) the ecclesiological contents before the establishment of the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology, (2) the ecclesiological contents in the works of Rev. Edward Kopeć, (3) the ecclesiological achievements of Rev. Stanisław Nagy and his students, (4) the ecclesiological achievements of Rev. Marian Rusecki and his students, and (5) a conclusion.
The article takes the issue of the image of God in the perspective of the relationships between faith and science. The structure of the article determines the three kinds of relationships between them. The first two are relations of conflict resulting on the one hand from the supremacy of faith over science, on the other - the reduction of faith by science. The third group of relations is the positions of dialogue and integration. Each relationship casts on the image of God. The consequence of the supremacy of faith over the science is the understanding of God as a distant, unknownable, inaccessible to man, and on the other as a tyrant who does not respect the autonomy, freedom and dignity of his creation. In the reduction of faith by science the image of God is twofold. On the one hand, God is reduced to the role of physics premise and assumption of the mechanics of the universe or to the Newtonian Watchmaker, and on the other is by science rejected as an unnecessary assumption. These claims of science are, however, included in the materialistic and atheistical position and going beyond their competences. The positions of dialogue and integration show that not only is no conflict between faith and science, but also that the results of science are the basis for a credible understanding of God’s image, which is consistent with his biblical image.
W trzeciej dekadzie dwudziestego pierwszego wieku "katedra" teologii katolickiej byla przedmiotem pewnych strukturalnych ataków, a jej rozwój jest obecnie "gorącym tematem".

In the third decade of the twenty-first century the “cathedral” of Catholic theology has suffered some structural assaults and the way forward is a contemporary “hot topic”. This paper argues against the idea, common among Catholics of the millennial generation, that we simply need to “reboot” the system to 1959 and restore the framework of “Strict Observance Neo-Scholasticism”. Instead it suggests that attention needs to be given to the structure itself, to issues in fundamental theology, and the relationships or “joints” in the framework of Catholic theology, along the lines recommended by Joseph Ratzinger and others in his theological circle.
The aim of this article is to demonstrate the contribution of fundamental theology to meta- theological research. The main considerations are introduced by a brief presentation of the main stages of development of the theory of theology. This renders it possible to indicate at which moment fundamental theology enters the meta-theological research and to present the research in this area. The participation of fundamental theology in these investigations is presented in two parts: (1) fundamental theological research in the area of the general theory of theology and (2) in the area of the theory of fundamental theology. In both areas, fundamental theology has a good number of publications and significant substantive achievements. This is undoubtedly due to the inclusion of meta-theology by many fundamental theologians as being important subjects of their research. Important, too, is the acknowledgement that fundamental theology, more than other theological disciplines, is predestined to carry out this type of investigation.

Celem artykułu Teologia fundamentalna wobec naukowości teologii jest ukazanie wkładu teologii fundamentalnej w badania metateologiczne. Do zasadniczych rozważań wprowadza krótkie przedstawienie głównych etapów rozwoju teorii teologii. Pozwala ono wskazać, w którym momencie w dociekania metateologiczne włącza się teologia fundamentalna i jaki stan badań zastaje. Udział teologii fundamentalnej w tych dociekaniach zostaje zaprezentowany w dwóch punktach: badania teologicznofundamentalne w obszarze ogólnej teorii teologii oraz w obszarze teorii teologii fundamentalnej.
This article contains many information about scientific and theological research on the Shroud of Tourin which arouses interest of many people. Especially fundamental theology research, the discipline which so far was interested in it very rarely and today should make necessary revisions, allows to see it as the picture of Jesus Christ, the third sign – beside paschal christofanies and so called the empty (not really) tomb – of the credibility of Christ’s Resurrection (maybe for some people the most evident) and a special sign of the Divine Revelation, God’s economy and the credibility of Christianity. Fundamental theology allows also to treat it as the miracle.

One of the arguments supporting the credibility of the Christian faith formulated as part of fundamental theology is called the aesthetic argument. It empha-sizes the importance of the power of beauty in the process of accepting Christianity as trustworthy. To further a deeper reflection on the topic, it is commendable to read a document published by the Pontifical Council for Culture in 2006 called “Via Pul-chritudinis” – Privileged Pathway for Evangelization and Dialog. This document has not been officially translated into the Polish language yet but constitutes a compendium of the Church’s teaching on the subject of the evangelical power of beauty. The prin-cipal aim of this article is to extract inspirational content from the abovementioned document, which may prove useful within the framework of fundamental theology. The text starts with a short introduction to the topic of the theology of beauty and via pulchritudinis followed by the analysis of the abovementioned document. Next, it describes the current situation concerning faith and the nature of arguments used to demonstrate Christianity as credible. The main part of this analysis will include the topic of understanding and making of the aesthetic argument as well as the issue of the motivational aspect of via pulchritudinis.
One of the classic arguments used in fundamental theology is the scriptural argument. It aims at showing that in the historical person of Jesus of Nazareth the messianic prophecies and salvific promises of the Old Testament were fulfilled. For this reason, it is also sometimes called biblical or prophetic. An important background, without which it is impossible to properly refer to this argument, is the complex historical and theological reality in which the gradual divergence of the ways of the Church and the Synagogue took place. Of key importance here is the capture and destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE and the subsequent rabbinic reorganization of biblical Judaism. The primary purpose of this paper is to point out the prominent features of this reorganization and its significance for the formulation of the scriptural argument in fundamental theology. This issue has not yet been widely debated in the literature on the subject. In pursuit of the stated aim, the consequences of the destruction of Jerusalem have been pointed out first. Next, the author discusses the meaning of the Septuagint (LXX) and the fact of its rejection by rabbinic Judaism, and points to the specificity of the Masoretic vocalization of the text of the Hebrew Bible. The final section points to the important inspirations for fundamental theology that flow from the contents discussed. In this way the scriptural argument gains in its significance and can still be helpful in substantiating the person and work of Jesus of Nazareth.
