Academic and linguistic gains during a semester long study abroad: A cohort case study

The present case study investigated university students’ academic and linguistic gains during a semester-long exchange program abroad. Thirty three third-year English majors from a Chinese university answered a battery of questionnaires and 13 of them participated in semi-structured interviews both prior to and after the program. Analyses of the data showed that the participants gained greatly from the exchange program both academically and linguistically. Based on the findings, some implications about exchange programs are discussed.

W realnej gospodarce kupno i sprzedaż oparte są na założeniach o sumie dodatniej: każda osoba zaangażowana w wymianę wypracowuje zysk. Bez zysku wymiana upada. Proces kupna i sprzedaży zazwyczaj odbywa się na zasadach pewności i przejrzystości, by zagwarantować sprawiedliwość. W sektorze finansowym inwestowanie, hedging oraz spekulowanie są oparte na sumie stałej – zysk jednego agenta jest stratą drugiego. Inwestorzy, asekuranci, spekulanci kierują się niepewnością i ryzykiem związanym z przyszłymi zmianami cen. Asekuranci nie lubią ryzyka, unikają go kosztem możliwych większych zysków. Spekulanci są nastawieni na ryzyko, podejmują je dla możliwych większych zysków. Inwestorzy mogą być przeciw ryzyku i/lub nastawieni na ryzyko. Autor artykułu skupia się na zagadnieniu kupna i sprzedaży w realnej gospodarce oraz inwestowaniu, hedgingu i spekulowaniu w sektorze finansowym, by lepiej zrozumieć, w czym są podobne i czym się różnią. Celem napisania artykułu nie jest szczegółowa analiza tych czynności, ale podkreślenie różnicy między działaniami o sumie pozytywnej a stałej oraz roli sprawiedliwości w realnej gospodarce i sektorze finansowym. W polu zainteresowania znalazły się wyłącznie instytucje finansowe i gospodarcze w USA. Jednakże zasady sprawiedliwości, które stosuje się w Stanach Zjednoczonych, z pewnością mają zastosowanie również w Polsce.

In the real economy, buying and selling are based on assumptions about a positive sum: each person involved in the exchange works out a profit. Without profit the exchange collapses. The process of buying and selling is usually held on the principles of certainty and clarity to ensure justice. In the financial sector investing, hedging and speculating are based on the fixed sum - gain of one agent is a waste of a second. Investors, hedgers and speculators are driven by uncertainty and risks associated with future changes in prices. The hedgers do not like risk, and avoid it at the expense of possible higher returns. Speculators are focused on the risk, and take it for potential higher returns. Investors may be against risk and /or risk oriented. The article focuses on the issue of buying and selling in the real economy, and investment, hedging and speculation in the financial sector, in order to better understand in what way are they similar and how they differ. The aim of this article is not a detailed analysis of these activities, but to emphasize the difference between the actions of the positive and fixed sum, and the role of justice in the real economy and the financial sector. The paper focuses purely on economic and financial institutions in the US. However, the principles of justice, which are used in the United States, surely can be also applied in Poland.
