The purpose of this article is to address the links between minority culture, education and identity in the context of Palestinian Arabs in Israel (PAI). In an effort to demonstrate the unique socio-political status and cultural orientation of the PAI, the historical background of Palestinians in Israel is provided as well as a description of the educational system in Israel, with emphasis on Arab sector education. Against this background, I examine: (1) issues of education and identity among PAI and (2) the potential for identity conflict. Since the majority of teachers in the Arab sector are women, issues of gender relations are also discussed. The narrative methodology is recommended for further research on the way in which Palestinian Arab teachers, as potential agents of social change, relate to the broader cultural context in which they live and how identity issues are managed and expressed in the context of professional roles. The author of this article is a Palestinian Arab teacher in the Israeli educational system. This provides an opportunity for an in-depth analysis of the phenomena presented from an “insider” perspective.

The paper looks at the way in which the notion of queenship - in connection or in contrast with that of kingship and royalty in general - is reflected in Shakespeare’s historical tetralogies and in Henry VIII. It is argued that all royal figures, male and female, featured in these plays, are presented by Shakespeare in accordance not only with Tudor historiography, but also with Elizabeth I’s own strategies of self-representation. Thus, the major notions to be looked into are virtue, legitimacy, agency, as well as, more generally, early modern religious and political issues concerning gender relations

Pomimo przemian w sferze życia małżeńsko-rodzinnego oraz intymnych relacji osoby samotne nadal często pytane są o powody pozostawania w stanie wolnym. Od dorosłej osoby wciąż oczekuje się, że wyjdzie za mąż/ożeni się. Niniejszy tekst przedstawia rezultaty brazylijskich badań poświęconych problematyce „singielstwa”. Autorki pracy skupiają się zwłaszcza na głównych powodach pozostawania w stanie wolnym przez osoby dorosłe z klasy średniej, zamieszkujące stan Bahia, miasto Salvador. Do analizy omawianego w tekście zjawiska zastosowano perspektywę feministyczną oraz kategorię gender. Zastosowano podejście intersekcjonalne, biorąc pod uwagę zarówno klasę społeczną, rasę, pokolenie, seksualność, jak i miejsce zamieszkania respondentów- -singli. Zastosowano metody mieszane z wykorzystaniem takich technik badawczych jak: kwestionariusz ankiety, zogniskowane wywiady grupowe (FGI), wywiady biograficzne oraz obserwacje terenowe. Wyniki badań pozwoliły na zaobserwowanie różnic i podobieństw w kwestii przyczyn pozostawania singlem między kategoriami płci. W przypadku kobiet główną przyczyną pozostawania w stanie wolnym są problemy w relacjach z innymi (partnerami), natomiast główną przyczyną bycia singlem w przypadku mężczyzn jest dobrowolny wybór takiego stanu.

Single people are often asked about the reasons for non-marriage, in a context where, despite several changes in the field of intimacy, adults are still expected to marry. Based on a thesis study on the subject of singleness in Brazil, in the city of Salvador, Bahia, this text presents the main reasons for singleness, declared by single middle-class adults who live alone in this city. The study used a feminist perspective, with the category gender as the basis for data analysis, in an intersectional way with social class, race, generation, sexuality and territoriality. It used mixed methods with a combination of instruments: questionnaire, focus groups, biographical interviews, and field observations. The findings collaborate to observe gender differences and closeness in reasons for singleness: relational reasons prevailing for women and being single as a choice for men.

The article offers an analysis of a once-famous Polish TV narrative for young audiences Stawiam na Tolka Banana [I’d bet on Tolek Banan] (1973, dir. Stanisław Jędryka), casting non-professional children actors and actresses whose superb and effortless performance still amazes. Beginning with the notion of TV series as a “repository of memory,” i.e. a document of cultural consciousness of its own era, the paper employs the Lacanian concepts of “fantasy,“ “Great Other,” “Master-signifier,” and the three registers of Lacan’s triadic division of human experience as analytical tools for the exploration of the mechanism of self-limiting, preemptive tools of subversion of official discourses present in the movie, such as: the discourse of Communist power and the patriarchal and androcentric discourse. In conclusion, the perspective is outlined for reading the film as an “incomplete deconstruction” of the discourse(s) of power, the notion of incompleteness pointing to a negotiation between the historical impossibility of a full rejection of those discourses by the movie and the incomplete control over the movie narrative and representation by those discourses.

The social structure and gender relations in Aboriginal societies clearly indicate that the male domain is favoured in contact with the sacred. Nevertheless, male-female relations are not as unequivocally established as they are thought to be within Aboriginal mythology. The sex of sacred characters such as the Rainbow Serpent or Cannibal Monster is extremely flexible even within the same version of a myth. The general character of male/female relations tends to be one of exchange, where male sacred power is a derivative of the female power of fertility. The most sacred values, belonging to the sacred-secret realm, are established by the tension between male and female principles, marked by moving those elements that belong to one gender to the domain of the other. This construct also establishes the threat of desacralisation, connected with moving the object back to the domain it came from.

The article deals with analysis of future social workers’ training in the context of forming students’ professional legal competency in higher education institutions of European Union (EU), the USA and Ukraine. Based on the study of scientific and reference sources the peculiarities of the educational process in the most popular higher education institutions, particularly, in EU, offering Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work have been defined: in France there is no distinct differentiation between social workers and social pedagogues; these professions successfully combine functions of education and assistance; future social workers are trained in centers and universities that follow instructions of French National Academy for Youth Protection and Juvenile Justice; at German universities social work curricula are based on threefold study load of future specialists: world societies and social development, social problems and human rights violation, international rights in social work; are interdisciplinary and can be realized in cooperation with other European universities; at British universities teachers have great practical experience in social work; student body is cosmopolitan, i.e. a mixture of mature and young students from different ethnic groups and nationalities; curricula also provide for a large volume of practical learning in working conditions corresponding to national requirements; in Spain future specialists are trained for three appropriate segments of labour market, namely, law, social work expert and Master in Social Work (such specializations as social mediation, leisure time activities, professional adaptation).

This paper discusses the ambiguity of sex identity within Aboriginal mythology. Male/female relations are the main point of the well-known Wawilag Sisters myth from Arnhem Land, based on a series of equivalent mythical unions: the penis in the vagina (male in female) ≡ the serpent in the hut (male in female) ≡ Wawilag sisters pregnancy (male in female) ≡ Wawilag sisters devoured by the serpent (female in male) ≡ subincised penis (female in male). The effect of such equivalencies may be compared to a “matryoshka” doll: the male (child) is in the female (sisters) which is in the male (serpent), which in a way also renders the male symbols female (this is why the serpent is called “pregnant”). The basis of such a construction may be understood as the creation of a series of transformations male>female>male>female etc., which eventually leads to realisation of the exchange of female with male blood; their equipoise is necessary for initiation ceremonies.

The article describes the relevance of gender images for the explanation of social and political change at the example of the Polish history since the late 18th century. While focussing on the aspects of political reforms in the field of the military and the bureaucracy it shows how the arenas of female and male agency had been re-configured in a time of abrupt social and political changes which had been characterizing Polish history in the era of reform politics, partitions, and the following decades of missing political independence. The author shows how the (at least until the beginning of the 19th century) rather permeable boundaries between the public and private sphere had become more and more fixed and how simultaneously the fields of male and female agency were ever more closely attached to the respective spheres. Besides that she elaborates on socially adequate forms of masculinities and femininities, whereby it becomes clear, that emotionality once seen as an indispensable element in the education of future soldiers and citizens had come under critique during the 19th century. According to changes in the legal systems (introduction of modern codes of civil law), to new political concepts (organic work) and last but not least to the biologization of gender relations new ideals of conduct in the private and public sphere were ever more attached to allegedly natural characteristics and abilities of men and women.

In Poland, the name Dagny is well-known because of the sad life and tragic death of the Norwegian wife of the famous and scandalising Polish-German fin de siécle writer Przybyszewski. But not many people know that she was a writer and poet herself, even if not a very prolific one. Her ouevre consists of four short plays, five poems in prose and a handful of poetry. The aim of this article is to analyse her plays and prose in respect of the relations between a man and a woman. Especially, I enquire if Juels work is only an expression of the literary conventions of her epoch, or if she gives her texts an unique (feminine) touch. I attempt to demonstrate that the latter is the case in her dramatic work and especially in her prose poetry.
