The main goal of this article is to present basic ontological and theoretical difficulties and methodological problems occurring in the study of generations based on specific examples of empirical research conducted in Poland. The attempt was made to determine empirically so called empirical generation from longitudinal studies. The article also made the attempt to answer the following questions: (1) whether and if yes, to what extent the results of panel research differ from the results of longitudinal studies in the study of generations (the differences between the results of PGSS and POLPAN), (2) what means the divergence of results, (3) which method is more effective in the effect study of cohort, history and generation. The analysis of available empirical data (on chosen examples) showed that panel research allows insight into the mechanisms of opinion, attitudes and orientation changes, therefore it is better in explaining generational changes than longitudinal studies. Observed differences in results between panel and longitudinal research may not have significance in the study of trends, but they may be important in the process of explaining causes of ongoing changes. The proposal of determining generations from empirical data may be the starting point to take up discussion of determinants of generational identity

Thirty years after the onset of democratisation in Central and Eastern Europe, the first generations of post-communist societies have been raised, educated and become professionally active. Objectively, they are a specific group of people whose primary and secondary socialisation occurred during a period that differed profoundly from that of their parents and older acquaintances. The article presents the results of a qualitative study conducted among Polish and Ukrainian students to diagnose their subjective generational self-identifications. The aim of the study was to determine whether and how young people in both countries perceive themselves and their social environment, and whether they identify themselves in terms of a unique generation.

The objective of the paper is analysis of the phenomenon of settling scores with the West German generation of ‘68 based on selected literary, (auto)biographical and essayistic texts of the authors belonging to the generation of their children, so called generation of ‘85. The article also aims to examine the process of building generational identity. The main fields of settling scores are: new concepts of family, anti-authoritarian education, sexual revolution, ideology, the past and politics. Apart from mostly negative there are also some ambiguous and ambivalent evaluations in which the generation of ‘68 is not only criticized, but also admired and envied. Text analysis shows the multidimensionality of the problem of settling scores with the generation of ‘68 and leads to the conclusion that through confrontation with the generation of their parents, the authors of the generation of ‘85 try to determine their own value system and to create their own generational identity. With its strong identity, the generation of ‘68 is a contrast plane for the generation of ‘85 that allows their self-definition. The research perspective presented in this paper refers to the field of generational research (Generationenforschung) and is based on the methods of close reading, which focuses on the immanent text analysis and wide reading, which is oriented towards analysis of the historical and cultural aspects represented in the texts.

The article presents a selected formative projects of polish poetry after 1989-especially contemporary engaged poetry-that have been frequently discussed so far. The author connects the term ‘generation’ with identity issues, however-contrary to Kazimierz Wyka-he does not understand it as an effect of generational experience, but rather as a part of an identity project. The author claims that the contemporary poets’ generations should be considered in the terms of conventionality, therefore the aim is to link an individual biography up to a broader context of a community’s biography. Moreover it stems from an idea of collective socio-political engagement. The ‘generation’ understood this way is no longer just a term of literary history, but on the contrary-a relevant interpretative tool.
