Wieloznaczny wyraz gościniec w polskim folklorze wierszowanym występuje jako: (1) ‘gospoda, karczma’, (2) ‘podarunek, prezent’, (3) ‘droga’. Bazując na tekstach pieśni miłosnych i pogrzebowych, przysłów, zagadek i zamówień, autor dokonuje szczegółowej analizy gościńca, w jego trzecim znaczeniu – ‘drogi’. Jest ono dla polskiego folkloru wierszowanego najbardziej typowe i ma najwyższą frekwencję.

The polysemous Polish word ‘gościniec’ in rhymed Polish may have the meaning of: (1) ‘gospoda/ karczma’ [a tavern], (2) ‘podarunek/ prezent’ [a gift], (3) ‘droga’ [a road]. The author carries out a detailed analysis of the word in its third sense, i.e. a road, on the basis of the linguistic material composed of dirges, love songs, riddles, and spells. The third sense of the word is the most typical and frequent in the Polish language.
