Ukrainian Oeconyms in the Context of Decommunization Processes in Central and Eastern Europe at the End of the 20th and Beginning of the 21st Centuries The article is dedicated to the analysis of ideologically meaningful proper names, mainly oikonyms, and also to the indication and description of the three main tendencies noticed in Ukrainian oikonyms from the end of 1989 until 2016, during the social and political transformations in Ukraine and the decommunization processes connected with it. Using examples, the authors illustrate the phenomenon of korenizatsiya (nativisation), namely the recovery of historical names from before sovietisation, allusiveness, ensuring a neutral nature for names by referring to objects outside the area of politics and ideology, as well as glorification, the honoring and memorializing of events, heroes, and symbols connected with the past and modern history of Ukraine.

This study aimed to characterize proper names from the “Słownik mimiczny dla głuchoniemych i osób z nimi styczność mających” written by Józef Hollak and Teofil Jagodziński. This lexicon, targeted at deaf people, their families and friends was edited in 1879. Among the collected proper names, there are anthrophonyms and geographic names. The analyses have shown the similarities and differences between proper names in the Polish Sign Language and the ways of signing the collected onyms indicated by the authors of the dictionary. Results of the analysis confirm that the aim of the dictionary was to become a useful tool in the process of explaining the articles of faith and the Bible. What is more, the structure of the dictionary proves that this is not the lexicon of the Polish Sign Language, but a two-language dictionary that translates vocabulary from Polish language to the Polish Sign Language. This is why the analyzed lexicon does not present the natural system of proper names characteristic of the Polish Sign Language, but rather illustrates different ways of adapting proper names in Polish language to the methods of signing that are possible in Polish Sign Language. The ways of signing proper names indicated by the authors of the dictionary were not aimed at the facilitation of communication with deaf people, instead they reflect the meaning of proper names.

The nomenclature in The Chronicles of Jakub Wędrowycz is connected with the mimetic fiction, the realistic trend in literary onymy, and with the poetics of magical realism. The Chronicles, as an example of contemporary popular literature, falls into the category of grotesque, it exploits black humor and combines realism with supernatural occurrences; it also favors current events and intertextualities. The realistic onymic layer performs its typical functions: geographic names place the events on the Polish-Ukrainian borderland (Wojsławice, Stary Majdan, Uchanie), locate them in time (The Soviet Union, FRG), and perform the semantic function as well (Gallows gorge). Personal names and ethnonyms are also typical, their structure is governed by the probability rules, and they serve the pragmatic functions in the literary work in both the official and the colloquial language (compare Szkopy [Krauts], Germans, Semen Paczenko, Józef/Józwa, Maciuś [diminutive], Skorliński). Proper names in The Chronicles engage in word plays and they can be grotesque, humorous; they lighten the atmosphere of horror and mystery especially in the context of the protagonist’s—Jakub Wędrowycz’s doings and his characteristics.

Nazwy własne Kronik to formy uwikłane w gry językowe, groteskowe, humorystyczne, przełamujące nastrój grozy i tajemniczości w obliczu działań i charakterystyki głównego bohatera, Jakuba Wędrowycza.
