This article is devoted to analysing the columnistic statements by Prus – a chess fan – about the chess game. Columnist describes different kinds of analogies between chess and life and draws conclusions from them about actions that allow to achieve success on various levels of life (individual, social, political, historical). Prus’ interviews about chess are arranged in a kind of philosophical discourse, in which the chronicler consist-ently returns to the issues expressed in years in columns: on the one hand, he points and condemns the faults of Poles, on the other, calls for a change in mentality and behaviour.
