The article deals with the typological analysis of adjective declination with the special focus on the number of grammatical categories, paradigm units, productivity, syncretism, congruence and morphophonological and/or morphophonetic parameters. Polyconfrontative comparison involves three genetically non-related languages: German, Polish and Latvian. Results of the analysis will be applied to methodology of foreign language teaching.
The paper attempts to provide an analysis of the phenomenon of grammatical interaction in the categorial area of aspect, tense and deontic modality under the presumption that these three functions are mutually connected with each other and form a setting of overtly or covertly encoded interface. The source text is written in English which is a language without the so called “Slavic-style aspect” i.e. the grammatically denoted opposition between perfectivity and imperfectivity. Thus, the deontic modality, which is a typical feature of each juristic text, is encoded in it by means of overt modal signals (modal verbs and other modal entities) in connection with the tense forms, especially the future tense. The Polish and Russian translations encode the deontic modality both by means of grammatical aspect, modal entities and tense forms. The paper investigates the relations between overt and covert expressions of deontic modality. The main claim is based on the assumption by Werner Abraham that deontic modality is strictly linked to the category of perfectivity which is encoded in Russian and Polish by means of the grammatical aspect (“viewpoint aspect”). The second claim is the preference of passive and impersonal constructions both in the source text and in its translations which is caused by the specificity sort of the analyzed text.
Teaching elementary Czech to university students is a challenging task. Given the profound complexity and numerous exceptions found in the Czech language system, a balance between oversimplification on the one hand and overwhelming students on the other hand needs to be sought. The objective of this study is to find out whether and to what extent do beginner Czech learners understand how selected grammatical categories work in Czech. The results imply that more attention should be paid to word formation processes as insufficient understanding of them was identified not only in students who were new to Czech but also in the control group.
The article looks at grammar in the construction of linguistic worldview (LWV): the problem is important inasmuch as most researchers tend to only focus on lexical issues. By adopting a broad understanding of grammar as a body of mechanisms that make language possible, the author claims that the Polish linguistic worldview draws from the world-formational system (it allows for the emergence of new words and organizes the lexicon by arranging it into conceptual categories with formal linguistic exponents). The inflectional and syntactic systems, in turn, contribute to the LWV much less: the only grammatical categories with a semantic function relevant in this respect are number, gender, tense, modality and conjunctions, which code relationships between entities and phenomena.

The study is based on the assumption that human cognition is closely linked with natural language. One can therefore ask what conceptual content has found its way into linguistic expression, in what form it is expressed, and what motivates that expression. The study is concerned with the linguistic manifestation of the concept of number (one of the most important categories of human thinking), through grammatical (morphological, syntactic and lexical), highly conventionalised means. Elementary numerical meanings encoded in Polish include ‘one’ and ‘more than one’ (in former stages of the language also ‘two’), corresponding to first numerical concepts comprehensible to humans (both in the historical and the individual sense). Those meanings are obligatorily expressed by all speakers of Polish and their markers are inflectional morphemes that play a role – in accordance with the norm – in all inflected parts of speech. That numerical opposition is also broadly expressed at the world-formational plane: there exist special morphemes that code the singularity of something (e.g. grosz-ek ‘pea’) or the collectivity of items (e.g. pierz-e ‘feathers; plumage’). Similarly, specific morphemes accentuate the singularity of an event (e.g. kaszl-ną-ć ‘to cough once’) or the multitude (multiplication) of actions (e.g. na-obierać ‘peel a lot of’, po-wynosić ‘take out many/all’ the items). The importance of the concept of number in Polish is also attested by the existence of numerals. The various degrees of precision that they express, e.g. the so-called definite numerals (trzy ‘three’, piętnaście ‘fifteen’) and indefinite (kilka ‘a few’, dużo ‘many’, tyle ‘that many’) correspond to the differences in the number and needs of the persons engaged in communication. The different inflectional paradigms and related syntactic functions of different numeral types stems from the need to link, in sentences, numbers with names of entities and events – that need, in turn, shows that a wide range of phenomena are perceived and conceptualised in numerical terms.

Grammar books for L2-learners mostly follow grammatical themes, e.g. sentence – verb – conjunctions. However, when a L2-learner composes a text, he will probably focus more on the function he wants to express than the form he wants to use. In this article, functionality versus grammatical categories will be discussed in order to answer the question, whether and – if so – how German and Dutch students differ in their way of expressing causality in academic writing. An analysis of German Bachelor’s and Master’s theses written by German and Dutch students showed differences between these groups in their use of subcategories (word classes) and specific words for expressing causality. The absence of a functional structure and specific information about the use of causal connectives in grammar books can therefore be regarded asan important cause for these findings. Especially for advanced L2-learners of German it seems recommendable to organize grammar books to put a greater focus on function (rather than form).
Afatyczne zaburzenia w realizowaniu gramatycznej postaci wyrazu są interpretowane w dwu perspektywach: 1) jako neutralizacja (zniesienie) fleksji, oraz 2) jako niedostatek elementów pełniących w zdaniu funkcje gramatyczne oraz niewłaściwe posługiwanie się morfemami fleksyjnymi. Przyjęcie założenia o neutralizacji morfemów fleksyjnych każe eksponować w gramatycznym opisie wypowiedzi chorych z afazją przejawy redukcji funkcjonalnych opozycji pomiędzy różnymi kategoriami gramatycznymi, zniesienie gramatycznego nacechowania wyrazów odmiennych i skłonność do tworzenia form podstawowych wyrazów. Takie spostrzeżenie nasuwa wniosek o zdolności chorych z afazją do realizacji tekstu komunikatywnego pomimo redukcji gramatycznego nacechowania wypowiedzi. W świetle powyższych ustaleń agramatyzmy afatyczne mają selektywny charakter uzależniony od stopnia relewancji gramatycznych wykładników funkcji i znaczenia wyrazów tekstowych.

Aphasic disorders in producing the grammatical from of word are interpreted from two perspectives: 1) as neutralization (abolishing) of inflection and 2) deficit of elements that perform grammatical functions in a sentence, and the wrong use of inflectional morphemes. The adoption of the assumption about neutralization of inflectional morphemes compels us to emphasize in the grammatical description of utterances of aphasic patients the manifestations of reduction of functional oppositions between different grammatical categories, the neutralization of grammatical marking of inflected words, and the tendency to produce basic forms of words. The adoption of the hypothesis about the destabilized grammatical system makes it necessary to present in the description all manifestations of grammatical marking of words in the utterances of aphasic patients, which allows us to say that patients are able to produce all inflectional morphemes existing in Polish but they use them in the wrong contexts, interchangeably with correct forms. The results of my studies have shown that the context of occurrence of agrammatisms can be varied. Agrammatisms occur more often in the environment that explicitly implies the grammatical functions of the incorrectly used construction; they are found less often in obligatory contexts when the language environment does not indicate the grammatical function of the words used. This observation suggests the conclusion that aphasic patients are able to produce a communicative text, with the reduction of the grammatical marking of utterances. In light of the foregoing findings aphasic agrammatisms are of selective nature depending on the degree of relevance of grammatical exponents of the function and meaning of text words.

The translator as a mediator between the original and the translation is a person who is simultaneously working between two languages, two cultures and two literary heritages, which have experienced different developments. The work of translation is similar to that of comparativism (comparing, text analysis, exploration of literary and cultural contexts, differences and similarities), so it is possible to say that the translator is an ideal comparatist, or a „comparatist — practitioner”, who must cope with the diversity of languages and cultures during the whole process of translation. Translation from the original to another language reveals relativism, which sometimes cannot be overcome. The different linguistic nature may appear not only at the level of semantics, or in the pragmatic conventions, but also in the field of grammar: for example, grammatical forms, which enable the creation of a certain poetic “visionism” in the original language, do not allow translation into another language, as the latter uses a different grammatical system. Thus, the Polish instrumentalis, which does not need to use the preposition s/z, is untranslatable into Slovenian and, considering the same principle, the Slovenian “intimate” category of the dual form is untranslatable into other languages. The differences between the various linguistic conceptualization are observable only through a comparative analysis between the original and the translation, which — in practical action — is done by the translator, and — in theory — by the translation critics.
