The article analyses the structural, pragmatic, cognitive and stylistic aspects of a handbook entitled Introduction to governance, featured in the first Polish popular-scientific journal – “Nowe Wiadomości Ekonomiczne i Uczone” published in Warsaw in 1758–1761 by Wawrzyniec Mitzler de Kolof. It has been demonstrated that the text under analysis, which can be classified as a utility text, shows conspicuous elements of two styles – ordinary (unsophisticated vocabulary; simple syntactic structures; proverbs) and scholarly (pronounced text segmentation, perspective of the author setting himself aside from the recipient; economic terminology; defining new or more difficult concepts; references to foreign (Latin and/or German) counterparts of Polish names of plants).

The aim of the present article was to conduct a primary analysis of a style/styles of a modern self-help manual (particularly in the form of a book), which analysis would take into consideration the following detailed problems: a handbook versus typical styles, the stylistic component of the handbook model, the style of a handbook and/versus the “handbook-like” style, the style of handbook texts. The observations presented here should be perceived as a fragment of a broader project which focused on recreating a model (a pattern) of the genre and its textual realisations. The analyses were conducted in line with the paradigms of linguistic genology and stylistics. The subject was selected on the basis of an assumption pertaining to the uncertain discursive status of handbooks – being now an expansive, polymorphic and transgressive form of discourse, which spreads its features to other genre forms. Uncertain remains the stylistic affiliation of this form of utterance, recognised by receivers/readers. Within the handbook sphere (no matter what genre it represents), one may introduce indicators of numerous styles and language variants. Specialist fields of science (law, Information Technology, medicine, etc.) impose their own, more or less hermetic ‘language’ on genre actualisations. Language styles are represented not only by verbal codes. In the case of handbooks, equally important is the image code – a picture, chart, or in a broader sense: a graphic shape of the text (a book). The review of textual empiricism should also be extended by stylistic distinctiveness which arises from individual preferences and traits of the author of discourse.

Va osservato che tutti sono stati scritti dai preti, professori di patrologia nei seminari, espongono il materiale in servizio alla dogmatica e sono assai ermetici in forma e linguaggio. Quelli piu recenti danno una bibliografia aggionata e - quasi sempre - riportano i testi piu significativi dei Padri.

The article refers to a collection of handbooks and guides for creative writing – both written by Polish authors and available in translations from English. The author reflects on the publishing conditions and the practices of publishers. In the main part of the article, he tries to reconstruct the figure of an advisor (instructor) in matters of creative writing. It presents the most common author’s strategies, and also reports on the circumstances in which the guidebooks were created.

Artykuł odnosi się do zbioru podręczników i poradników twórczego pisania – zarówno napisanych przez polskich autorów, jak i dostępnych w przekładach z języka angielskiego. Autor zastanawia się nad uwarunkowaniami wydawniczymi oraz praktykami wydawców. W zasadniczej części artykułu próbuje zrekonstruować sylwetkę doradcy (instruktora) w sprawach kreatywnego pisania. Przedstawia najczęściej pojawiające się strategie autorskie, a także zdaje sprawę z okoliczności, w jakich publikacje poradnikowe powstały.

Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie zapomnianego dzieła Joachima Löisentina pt. Christliche Haußzucht…, które po 31 latach zostało opublikowane w 1655 r. przez Davida Friedricha Rhetego w Gdańsku. Zbiór ten, stanowiący połączenie modlitewnika, kancjonału oraz podręcznika wiary, przedstawiono jako komplementarny poradnik służący systematycznej i metodycznej katechizacji w duchu luterańskim w zaciszu domowym.

The aim of the article is to present the forgotten work by Joachim Löisentin, titled Christliche Haußzucht..., published in Gdańsk in 1655, that is 31 years after its inception, by David Friedrich Rhete. This collection, a combination of a prayer book, a hymnal, and a religious handbook, was presented as a complementary guide for systematic and methodical catechisation, in the Lutheran spirit, in the comfort of one’s own home.

W artykule analizowane są podręczniki, rozmówki i słowniki tematyczne służące do nauki języka białoruskiego jako obcego, wydane na Białorusi oraz różnych krajach świata. Ukazano także artykuły, w których różni autorzy omawiają dotąd wydane podręczniki. W artykule został zaprezentowany podział omawianych podręczników m.in. ze względu na miejsce wydania, grupę docelową, pochodzenie autorów, prezentowany materiał i funkcje podręczników.

The article analyzes handbooks, phrase books and thematic dictionaries for teaching Belarusian as a foreign language, published in Belarus and various countries around the world. Papers were also shown in which different authors discuss the handbooks issued so far. The article presents the division of discussed handbooks, among others due to the place of publication, the target group, origin of authors, presented material and functions of handbooks.
