Artykuł ukazuje wieloaspektowe relacje między fotografią a szeroko rozumianą kulturą miasta. Fotografia została wynaleziona w czasie, gdy powstawały nowoczesne metropolie i od samego początku stała się sztuką nierozerwalnie z miastem związaną. Kolejne pokolenia fotografów snują swoje wizualne narracje, które odzwierciedlają rozmaite strategie i wizje artystyczne. Tym sposobem fotografia zarówno współtworzy wielkie miejskie mity i legendy (np. paryskie bulwary lub nowojorskie drapacze chmur), jak i staje się narzędziem demitologizacji, medium uprawiania krytyki społecznej. Inaczej mówiąc, fotografia miejska zawsze odzwierciedla jakąś wizję miasta i nigdy nie jest neutralna. Tekst ukazuje kilka aspektów złożonego zjawiska określanego jako fotografia miejska, począwszy od połowy XIX stulecia aż do początków wieku XXI.

The article presents a multifaceted relations between photography and widely understood culture of the city. Photography was invented at the time when modern metropolises were being built/constructed and, from the very beginning, it became inextricably tied to the city. Consecutive generations of photographers have been creating their own visual narrations which reflect different strategies and artistic visions. This way, photography both co-creates the great urban myths and legends (such as the Parisian boulevards or skyscrapers of New York) and becomes a tool of demythologisation of urban space, and a medium of critical look at reality. In other words, Urban photography always reflects a vision of the city and cannot be neutral. The text presents some aspects of the complex phenomenon known as urban photography, starting from the mid-nineteenth century until the first years of the 21st century.
