The book by Marcin Starzyński recapitulates, rectifies and complements what we at present know about the medieval City Council of Cracow as an institution. The discussed monograph collected the most important issues devoted to the medieval Council of Cracow. The monograph pointed also to the directions along which further research should be continued. The volume therefore does not conclude the study of the aforementioned institution. Its task is rather to introduce further research whose subject-matter might include: the prosopographic studies, the law-creating accomplishments of the Council and the political role that it played in the medieval Kingdom of Poland. It is worthwhile to note that half the volume is covered by the appendices that inform of the city councilors, include the register of the Council-produced wilkurs and specify the debts incurred by the Council in order to achieve the measures needed for lending money to the Kings.

Главная тема статьи – размышление о присутствии лошадей в городском пространстве Кракова. Эти животные составляют неотъемлемую часть городского пейзажа, так как их каждый день можно встретить на улицах Кракова. В тексте рассматривается вопрос использования лошадей в качестве тягловой силы в городском транспорте, пожарных командах или службах безопасности. Положение лошадей представлено в контексте зарождающегося движения за заботу о животных, восходящего к XIX веку. Такое широкое использование лошадей привело к огромным злоупотреблениям по отношению к этим животным.

The main goal of this article is to ponder the presence of horses in the urban space of Kraków. Due to their common presence on the streets, horses constitute an integral part of Kraków’s cityscape. Joanna Gellner treats the issue of using horses as draft force in urban transport, by fire brigades and order services. She discusses the situation of horses in the context of the emerging animal welfare movement, which dates to the nineteenth century. The large scale of using horses caused a similarly large scale of abuse against them.

Tematem artykułu jest refleksja na temat obecności koni w przestrzeni miejskiej Krakowa. Zwierzęta te ze względu na swoją powszechną obecność na ulicach miasta stanowią jego integralną część. W tekście poruszona jest kwestia wykorzystania koni jako siły pociągowej w miejskich środkach transportu, straży pożarnej czy służbach porządkowych. Sytuacja koni przedstawiona jest w kontekście rodzącego się ruchu opieki nad zwierzętami, który swoimi początkami sięga XIX wieku. Tak duże wykorzystywanie koni przekładało się bowiem na ogromną skalę nadużyć wobec tychże zwierząt.
