Pionierskie prace badawcze dotyczące chemioterapii przeprowadzone zostały na przełomie XIX i XX wieku przez niemieckich i francuskich uczonych. Późniejsze badania prowadzone zarówno przez uczonych europejskich jak i amerykańskich zaowocowały uzyskaniem wielu leków przeciwdrobnoustrojowych. Niektóre z tych osiągnięć uwieńczone zostały Nagrodą Nobla. W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono rys historyczny odkryć z dziedziny chemioterapii ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem antybiotyków przeciwbakteryjnych.

Th e pioneer work on antimicrobial agents was conducted in the late 19th and the early 20th century, mostly by the French and German scientists. Th e later research performed both in Europe and in the USA resulted in the development of a large number of novel antimicrobial drugs. Some of these achievements were highly appreciated and consequently awarded with the Nobel Prize. In this review the history of the major cornerstones in the antimicrobial agents development is outlined. Special attention is given to the antibacterial antibiotics.
