The subject of description in this paper is the functioning of the expressions biały kruk in the history of Polish language. The expression has a long tradition of application in Polish language, although its complete metaphorisation took place as late as in the 19th century. The analysis of the functioning of the expression in 20th and 21st century texts convinces us that at present it is subject to numerous formal modifications and is broadening the scope of its meaning.

By the time the first dictionary of the Polish language by Samuel Linde was published, several dozen translation lexicons had been published, in which the Polish language was once in the position of the initial language, and other times – the target language. The number and variety of such dictionaries should make them important material for a researcher of the history of the Polish language. However, a review of selected textbooks of the history of the Polish language shows that the potential of dictionaries is not used enough. The article strives to prove that translation lexicons are a source of equal value in relation to other texts for building a general reflection on the history of the Polish language. This hypothesis is illustrated with examples from the field of graphical variability, the development of the language system, linguistic awareness and historical and cultural phenomena.

Do czasu wydania pierwszego słownika języka polskiego Samuela Lindego ukazało się kilkadziesiąt leksykonów przekładowych, w których polszczyzna raz stawała w pozycji języka wyjściowego, innym razem – docelowego. Liczba i różnorodność tego typu publikacji powinny czynić z nich ważki dla badacza historii polszczyzny materiał. Przegląd wybranych podręczników do historii języka polskiego przynosi jednak spostrzeżenie, że tkwiący w słownikach potencjał wykorzystywany jest w ograniczonym zakresie. W artykule autorka stara się dowieść, że leksykony przekładowe są równowartościowym względem innych tekstów źródłem do snucia ogólnej refleksji o dziejach polszczyzny. Tezę ilustruje przykładami z zakresu wariantywności grafii, rozwoju systemu językowego, świadomości językowej i zjawisk historyczno-kulturowych.
