In the 1920s–1930s, when the theoretical foundations of the methodology of Latvian literature were elaborated, branch experts (scientists, methodologists, teachers) resolved several problems connected with acquiring the literature content that are still topical also in the present-day teaching process of literature, namely, the specific character of literature as a study subject, the principles of the choice of teaching content and distribution, opportunities of acquiring various literature genres, scheduling literature lessons, choice and application of adequate study methods, visual aids and illustrative materials, as well as issues of methodology of compositions (essays). The historical experience of the methodology of literature of the 1920s–1930s has been actualized in the context of present-day literature didactics.
