The aim of this article was to establish some biographical facts about Joseph Zmijewski, the author of the manuscript Method of curing with the means not used before […], so far known only by his first name and surname, On the basis of the author’s comments, the interpretive sources, as well as the secondary sources it has been possible to establish that he lived in the 19th century (or perhaps in the first decade of the 20th century), came from a Mazovian noble family. Undoubtedly he was well educated and knew the recondite material of medical art. He took part in the fights for the independence of our country.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate how a linguist can find biographic data knowing only the name and surname of the author of a manuscript. It is extremely important for a language historian as historical linguistics must possess a historical background without which drawing up a cohesive synthesis, registering and systematizing linguistic facts is impossible. Based on Józef Zmijewski’s description of the nature and etiology of plica neuropathica, methods and means for treating this – as he puts it – “medical condition”, the nomenclature he uses (I am explaining the origin of a variety of names of this hair disorder), as well as the knowledge from other domains, I attempt to find out what Zmijewski’s profession was. Adding this important fact to the biography of the author of The method will allow for further exploration of medical vocabulary contained in this historical piece of literature.

Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, w jaki sposób językoznawca może ustalić dane biograficzne znanego tylko z imienia i nazwiska autora rękopisu. Jest to niezwykle ważne dla historyka języka, językoznawstwo diachroniczne musi bowiem dysponować zapleczem historycznym, bez którego wykluczone jest opracowanie spójnej syntezy, rejestrującej i systematyzującej fakty lingwistyczne. Na podstawie rozważań o charakterze i etiologii kołtuna, proponowanych przez Zmijewskiego sposobów i środków leczenia tego – jak sam określa – schorzenia oraz używanej przez niego nomenklatury dla tej dolegliwości, a także wiedzy z zakresu innych dziedzin niż językoznawstwo staram się ustalić, kim był z zawodu Zmijewski. Uzupełnienie biografii twórcy Metody o ten fakt pozwoli w przyszłości na rzetelne opracowanie słownictwa medycznego zapisanego na kartach zabytku.
