The article covers the book of Idith Zertal, Nation and Death. Holocaust in the discourse and politics of Israel. It was published in Hebrew in 2002 under the original title HaUmah ve HaMavet, Historia, Zikaron, Politika by the Israeli publishing house Dvir. The Polish language version was not released until 2010 by the Krakow-based Universitas publishing house. The translation was prepared by Jan Maria Kłoczowski. The author of this publication points out, however, that the translation was made on the basis of the English and French versions of the text, which may be a disadvantage of the Polish publication, as often the meaning hidden between words may be transformed when translated from other languages. The text carefully discusses the individual chapters, pointing out both the advantages and disadvantages of Zertal’s work.

Autorka artykułu recenzuje książkę Idith Zertal, Naród i śmierć. Zagłada w dyskursie i polityce Izraela. Została ona opublikowana w języku hebrajskim w 2002 roku pod oryginalnym tytułem HaUmah ve HaMavet, Historia, Zikaron, Politika przez izraelskie wydawnictwo Dvir. Polska wersja językowa ukazała się dopiero w 2010 roku nakładem krakowskiego wydawnictwa Universitas. Tłumaczenie zostało opracowane przez Jana Marię Kłoczowskiego. Autorka niniejszej publikacji zaznacza jednak, iż przekład został dokonany na podstawie wersji angielskiej i francuskiej tekstu, co może stanowić wadę polskiej publikacji, gdyż nierzadko sens ukryty między słowami może ulec przekształceniu przy przekładach z kolejnych języków. W tekście skrupulatnie omawia ona poszczególne rozdziały recenzowanej publikacji, wskazując zarówno zalety, jak i mankamenty pracy Zertal.

Bronia (Brejndl) Baum (1896–1947) was an orthodox writer, activist and publicist. She was born in a Hasidic family in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. She published poems and articles in Yiddish in “Der Jud”, “Dos Jidisze Togblat”, “Bejs Jakow” and in Hebrew in “Bat Izrael”, “Baderech”. In the family archive among the manuscripts of Bronia Baum from 1912–1921, a diary written in Russian has been preserved. Considering the content and form of records, it can be most accurately described as an intimate diary. The notes of Bronia Baum are a valuable source for research in the field of local Jewish history, especially during the First World War, but also for issues related to Jewish orthodoxy, Zionism and religious feminism.
