The article was devoted to the methodology of research on the relationship between literature-religion. Its aim is a critical reflection on the use of the category of ‘the sacred’ in the research. In Poland, in 70. of the last century, ‘the sacred’ has become the vital category for reflections on the religious aspects of literature (eliminating such terms as ‘catholic literature’ and ‘religious literature’). The historiographical method is used in the article. The author presents the steps of the presence of the category ‘the sacred’ in the humanities, especially in the Polish literature studies. The main results of the analysis: sacrological research had prepared us to meet study of literature and cultural studies. Many factors point to the fact that sacral research was one of the first attempts to build a bond between literary and cultural studies. The term ‘the sacred’ did not have classification or typological aim (such function was sometimes assigned to ‘religious literature’ term). Its wide range allowed activities that led to identification of the religious profile of the literary work. Its primary context was not any ideology or religious doctrine, but cultural anthropology, so it demanded culture studies competence more than being involved in world outlook. The wide range of the notion – completely natural and desirable in the anthropology of culture – did not have to be something obvious in the research of separate literary works, at times evoking the image of the world strictly connected with particular religion, or even particular worship. The answer to this was Stefan Sawicki’s offer to replace ‘the sacred’ category when analysing such works with other terms. Organizational measures undertaken by the founder of Lublin school of sacral research were soon verified by the reality of academic discussion – subject, as each discussion, to the rules of terminology fashion. ‘The sacred’ became fashionable term for some time – used and overused, perhaps. It became the key-word to open all possible references to religious sphere in literary works. It was applied not only where the layer of religious meaning remained generalized in the text, but also in those which were distinctly involved in the symbolic world of a specific religion. There were of course attempts to introduce new notion where the context demanded it. Taken in the article analyzes the concept of the sacred in literary studies have been limited mainly to the area of Polish literary criticism. The text encourages further research. It has practical significance. It explains the methods, can serve students and other readers (such as teachers or students) to acquire the skills to interpret literary texts. The author is not only critically discusses the use of the sacred in the research literature, but also proposes a new research tools in the form of the category of “spirituality”.

The review deals with the comparative analysis of the second edition of the book by Kharkiv literary critic, Doctor of Philology, Professor Leonid Genrikhovich Frizman (1935–2018) “In the circles of literary critics: Memoirs essays”, published in Kyiv and Moscow in 2017. The history of the book is described in the context of the author’s creative practices and similar experiences of Russian and Ukrainian literary critics; its substantive focus, the concept embodied in it, the personal composition, style, architectonics, illustrative component and artistic design are characterized in the review. The focus is on the study of the semantic role of the corrections and additions, made by the author in the second edition. The analysis takes into account the existing critical experience of perception of the first edition of memoirs in Russia to avoid unnecessary repetition.

The issue of subjectivity is raised in the theoretical and critical works on poetry authored by Barańczak, so to speak, marginally. Despite the fact, the issue of identity seems to constitute their core subject and is organically related to other relevant key threads such as, primarily, the issue of the “ethics of distrust”. Interestingly enough, the ambivalence of the situation of an individual, - placed somewhere between the individualistic and the community perspective - which is emphasized by Stanisław Barańczak by making rhetoric figure of paradox particularly privileged - is also expressed in the language in which the critic describes the problem. His observations come down ultimately to one thing: a consistent search in different writers for a confirmation of the assumption on the paradoxical nature and bi-dimensionality of human existence.

The aim of this text is to create the preconditions for systematic research into the progress of autonomization of art within Czech culture. Specialist literature for the most part reflects the results of this process, which were striking during the time that modern trends were emerging in the 1890s, but the actual course of the autonomization process particularly from the 1860s to the 1880s has not yet been examined in any detail. After defining the concept of the autonomization of art, the author of the article refers to sociological and literary history research into this issue in the French milieu (Pierre Bourdieu and Michael Einfalt), and in this connection he focuses attention on criticism as a source that is obviously of key importance in acquiring a knowledge of the historical course of the autonomization of Czech literature.

The article concerns the relationships between terms, frequent in Polish literary criticism, such as “women’s literature”, “women’s press”, “women’s writing”, “literature written by women” and ”Feminist literature”. The author discusses three research books that have been published recently in which slightly different categories have been applied and which, at the same time, focus on the female element of cultural texts. In addition, the author points at multiple tendencies, frequently dissimilar and distinct, in the approach to the relationship between gender and the text. At the same time the author emphasizes a certain disposition manifested by researchers to employ the gender category to judge literary works. Hence, it seems to be quite justified to reopen the Jy women to show them in a new light. The same applies to the surrounding discussions on relevant titles - just as it is the case with publications by Joanna Krajewska, Jerzy Strzelczyk and Kamilla Łozowska-Marcinkowska.
