Through the content analysis of basic ethnologic and folkloristic journals from the years 1945-1989 (Český lid [The Czech Folk], Československá ethnografie [The Czechoslovak Ethnography], Národopisný věstník československý [The Czechoslovak Ethnographical Journal] including Věstník národopisné společnosti česko-slovenské [The Journal of the Czechoslovak Ethnographic Society] and Zprávy Společnosti česko-slovenských národopisců [The Newsletter of the Society of Czechoslovak Ethnographers], Národopisné aktuality [The Ethnographical News]), the study shows the tendencies in the development of particular periodicals, major themes studied, and interconnections of their authors and editors.

When the ethnology study programme was divided into the bachelor and the master degree programmes, the bachelor programme focused on the basic knowledge of the field of ethnology; first of all on Slovak and central European “traditions” and then also on other foreign “traditions” of the discipline. the history of ethnology is an integral part of the instruction. Ethnology is one of the oldest disciplines taught at the Bratislava university. In the past, it was incorporated in the structures of other departments. The independent ethnology department was formed forty years ago and the courses on the history of ethnology have always been a compulsory part of the studies. Attention has always been paid primarily to the history and personalities of the 19th century, depending on each lecturer’s preferences. nowadays, teachers focus on the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The editing, exhibition, societal, educational and building activities of this period determined the position and social prestige of ethnology in its further development. The time during the undergraduate studies is an important period for all ethnology students as they acquire knowledge which was not accessible to them during their high school studies. We believe that from the methodological point of view, it is important to study the history of the discipline in order to consolidate one’s knowledge within the framework of the little acknowledged social sciences.

The study deals with the principal tendencies in the development of Czech prosaic folkloristics after 2000, and it analyses the revitalization of folkloristics, which began after a period of certain instability in the discipline, uncertainty in research activities, and low productivity in the 1990s. The new millennium saw quite a vigorous increase in research on folklore within Czech ethnological and anthropological studies, which became evident mainly in the following research domains: research on collective and family memory; research in the field of contemporary legends, rumours, and contemporary folklore in general; research and indexing of “traditional” legends; and the revitalization of folktale studies. At the same time, new series began to be published, and publication activity itself experienced a significant increase (including the foundation of three folkloristic series, even by non-academic, commercial publishing houses), as did the number of international scholarly contacts. For this reason, prosaic folkloristics can be by rightly considered to be one of the most fruitful (sub)disciplines of the Czech ethnological and anthropological sciences.

The study acquaints the readers with the life story of one of the leading personalities of Czech ethnology in the second half of the 20th century - University Professor PhDr. Antonín Robek, DrSc. - the leader of the Department of Ethnography and Folkloristics at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, and the accredited director of the Institute of Ethnography and Folkloristics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The biographical sketch is based on the combination of biographical research, oral history method and analysis of historical sources. The resulting image is an intersection of the fundamentally subjective memories that the oldest and middle generations of Czech ethnographers and ethnologists have of Antonín Robek, with hitherto (un)published information about his person and activities. .
