Autorzy dowodzą, posługując się przykładami z korpusów i innych cyfrowych kolekcji tekstów, że wyraz digitalizacja, odnoszony dziś przede wszystkim do czynności i procesów związanych z techniką komputerową funkcjonował w polszczyźnie już przynajmniej od lat 30. XX wieku jako termin medyczny i oznaczał działanie na organizm pacjenta lekami z naparstnicy (łac. digitalis). Był jednak nieobecny w słownikach ogólnych polszczyzny. W latach 70. XX wieku wyraz został ponownie zapożyczony, z języka angielskiego, w znaczeniu ‘wytwarzanie cyfrowych kopii istniejących realnie obiektów’ i w tym znaczeniu występuje w tekstach języka polskiego do dziś, tworzą się także jego inne znaczenia.

By using examples from corpora and other digital collections of texts, the authors prove that the word digitalizacja (‘digitization’), which nowadays refers mostly to activities and processes connected to computer technology, has functioned in the Polish language since at least the 1930s. In the past it was a medical term used to describe treating a patient with medication created with the plant digitalis. It was, however, absent in the general dictionaries of the Polish language. In the 1970s, the word was re-borrowed (from English) in the meaning of ‘creating digital copies of objects existing in real life’. In this meaning it persists in texts written in Polish up to this day. New meanings of the word are also emerging.

The article presents a lexicographical history of two word families: pąć and peregrynacja. It has been demonstrated how these families evolved quantitatively at various periods of the development of the Polish language, how the semantics of lexemes functioning in these aggregates changed. The analysed material has been excerpted from historical and modern general language dictionaries and etymological dictionaries of Polish as well as from expert publications in the field of religious studies.
