Włodzimierz Spasowicz can be portrayed as a lawyer – a lecturer, the author of the first criminal law textbook ever to be published in Russia, the `king of Russian advocacy' – a humanist, literary historian, literary critic, an editor and publisher; a political, cultural, and social activist. Spasowicz was born January 29th 1829 in Rzeczyca nad Dnieprem, in the Minsk area. Having graduated from a gymnasium in Minsk at the age of sixteen, he was admitted to the Law Department at the University of Petersburg. After completing his studies, he worked with the judiciary for a while, and after that he became a university lecturer. His liberal stance got him removed from his position of a professor at the university. For the next few years he made a living publishing articles for liberal Russian periodicals. He joined the District Attorney's Office in Petersburg in 1866. As an attorney, he became renowned for participating in the biggest political trials of his time. Despite his lack of rhetorical skills he became known as the `king of Russian advocacy', a `master of words'. His court statements were characterized by great erudition and contained elements of ethics, philosophy and psychology. Spasowicz was a well known literary historian and critic. His legacy consists primarily of dissertations on Polish and Russian literature and their relationship. He started the `Ateneum' monthly together with Adolf Pawinski' in Warsaw and the `Kraj' weekly with Erazm Piltz in Petersburg. He was the organizer of various societies and circles. For example, he was the founder of the Law Society and a founder and member of the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Society started in 1866. 1873 was the year he became a member of the `Akademia Umiejętności' in Cracow. He was also the initiator of the Warsaw Science Society in 1906.
