The article is devoted to the ideas of a holistic approach to examine the child in school in Kharkov pedological school in the activities of pedologist, pathologist I. P. Sokolyansky. Among the scholars who have studied the idea of a holistic approach to the development of the child and his social education was just Ivan Panasovych Sokolyansky. However historiographical review shows that the inheritance of I. P. Sokolyansky has not received adequate attention. His pedagogical views, the idea that they are stored archival documents, special research papers, also require further study in teacher activities in educational institutions of Kharkov, Uman, Zaporozhye and others. Based on scientific and historical analysis of historical and pedagogical, psychological and pedagogical literature, the article presents scientific and organizational system of implementation of humanistic ideas of holistic approach to the individual child with legacy of I. P. Sokolyansky. In his writings teacher concluded that the forms, rules and directions of the child’s behavior resulting from the impact of the environment. I. P. Sokolyansky was one of the representatives of the Kharkov School of pedology for deafblind children, engaged in the problems of children with disabilities. The ideological basis of Kharkov school pedology, which was complicated scientific and organizational activity may be distinguished by humanist idea of a holistic approach to the child, which was developed by one of the native pedologists I. P. Sokolyansky. Kharkiv cell of pedologists (O. S. Zaluzhnyi, I. P. Sokolyansky, O. V. Zaporozhets, P. I. Zinchenko, O. M. Leontiev and others) emphasized the impact of society on child development. This study presents historical and partly pedagogical experience of socialization of children with developmental disabilities, but require further study of other aspects of the problem, namely, сomparative analysis of a holistic approach to the study of the individual child’s teacher and systematic analysis of existing in the world of science theoretical and experimental research concepts of mental development of children with disabilities.

The paper presents a summary of a four-year long research on the text books in piano playing for the beginners. On the one hand, today, changes in paradigms are discussed much about (child-centered education), national standards are defined and author programmes have been developed by teachers; on the other hand, teaching aids adequate to the new paradigm and aimed at promoting 5-7 year old children’s education in piano playing do not exist. The Aim of the Study is to formulate holistic approach-based principles that would underlie the development of a contemporary, scientifically valid teaching aid in piano playing for 5-7 year old children. Research subject: holistic approach to the development of a teaching aid in piano playing for 5-7 year old children. Research object: principles of developing a teaching aid. The research results in defining the holistic approach-based principles for developing a teaching aid: gradualness, visuality, musical diversity, compactness, regularity, esthetics, national/ multinational principle, perceptibility, adequacy to the age, self-creation and scientific principle. On the basis of these principles, a text book for 5-7 year old children has been designed by the author and assessed by experts. The research data are analyzed both qualitatively (surveys of teachers and pupils’ parents) and quantitatively (method of experts’ conclusions). A textbook could help to comprehend what is happening at music lessons and easier join the piano training process, and it could also make the piano training process, whose participants are children, teachers and parents, more diverse and creative.

Recent tendencies in education highlight the need to align the system of general education in Latvia with the tenets of sustainability. In keeping with this broad target orientation, this paper re-examines international and Latvian experiences and perspectives on the application of a holistic approach to the content of primary education. This review of good practice is set against the backdrop of different theories and approaches concerned with the essence and principles of holism. More specifically, the paper addresses the issue of ensuring successful acquisition of musical cultural values in primary school via a holistic approach. In this regard, the latter is construed as movement towards the new that facilitates positive attitudes towards musical cultural values among learners and is both physically and spiritually nurturing. The paper proposes a theoretically and empirically grounded model for the usage of a holistic approach with a view to enabling acquisition of musical cultural values in primary school. The gradual development of the model is traced in the course of theoretical and empirical inquiry, the latter involving a survey and an interview with five experts

The study discusses changes which have occurred in Polish theory of physical education since 1805. From biomedical perspective the theory has been evolving towards humanistic paradigm. While reviewing relevant publications and their contents the author presents the developments in the theory of physical education in Poland, including in particular the changing goals of physical education. He explains the relationship of theory of physical education to pedagogy of physical culture and theory of physical culture as well as examines the position of physical education in relation to the concept of “physical culture”. He also points to the impact of ideology and preconditions related to worldview which are unavoidable in the area of pedagogy. In addition to describing the current standard in teaching “theory of physical education” the author also suggests new themes which should be taken into account for the needs of the theory. Accordingly, the canon of pedagogy “suitable for the 21st century” would include concepts originating from personalism, radical humanism and holistic pedagogy. The article presents contemporary Polish applications of these humanistic concepts to the theory of physical education. The author believes that holistic approach to both a person and educational process is most appropriate.

Wyjaśnia relacje teorii wychowania fizycznego wobec pedagogiki kultury fizycznej i teorii kultury fizycznej, a także miejsce samego wychowania fizycznego w stosunku do pojęcia „kultura fizyczna”. W pracy przedstawiono współczesne polskie aplikacje tych humanistycznych koncepcji do teorii wychowania fizycznego. Holistyczne podejście do człowieka i procesu wychowania autor uważa za najbardziej właściwe.

Increasingly recognized threats from climate change and the progressive sixth mass extinction require not only searching for new technological solutions, but also changing the perception of the world and the beings living in it. There is an urgent need to include individual practices; practices that are an integral part of integrated policies to protect habitats, the climate, and the homo sapiens itself. Eric S. Nelson, in his latest book Daoism and Environmental Philosophy. Nourishing Life introduces the reader to the environmental approach known to Chinese communities for centuries. In a comprehensive and accurate manner, the author presents the Chinese approach to life and development, the understanding and interpretation of which has changed over the centuries, invariably emphasizing man’s belonging to the world of nature. This review introduces the author’s assumptions presented in the book, combining them with relatively new thoughts and paradigms appearing in the 20th and 21st centuries in Western Europe and the United States.

The recognition that transversal competences are increasingly needed to face the challenges of the ever-changing world has given rise to work examining students' development of transversal competences (TVCs) during their university time. This approach argues in favor of embedding transversal competences as well as health literacy competence and subject-based competences in curricula. The mini-study presented herein first posits a logical model for the integration of transversal competences in university curricula, supplemented with a qualimetric model comprising 6 factors associated with transversal competences. The resulting tools for transversal competence evaluation and self-assessment were next applied in a pilot questionnaire study of a small group of management students at a local university. Overall, the findings support the claim that students' TVC development requires a new educational paradigm based on a holistic approach to competence-based learning that involves the harmonious development of a person's TVCs and subject-based competences. Moreover, the results may serve as a reference for future studies on transversal competences and health literacy in particular, as well as for teachers and researchers in related fields.

The World Health Organization defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ This definition promotes holistic approach towards patients. New discoveries and developments in medical science, lead to breaking up medicine into narrow specialities. New generation of health workers needs role models that are able to enhance the status of medical profession and to oppose negative consequences of fragmentation of medicine and commercialization in health sector. The author of the article proposed Dr Wanda Blenska – doctor of leprosy patients from Uganda - as a role model of holistic approach in medicine. Doctor Wanda Blenska took efforts to understand her leprosy patients and support them in all their needs. Her service not only included treatment of ‘leprosy’ as infectious disease, but also physical and psychological rehabilitation of patients, orthopaedic and cosmetic surgery, or even changing the patient’s environment to ensure their highest possible physical, mental and social well-being. Doctor Wanda Blenska left a message to the new generation of doctors: first of all, medical profession is a vocation; care for patients should be motivated by desire to relief the patients’ suffering and not only by own financial benefits; doctors should see a human being in every patient and respect and treat them in a holistic way.

Światowa Organizacja Zdrowia definiuje zdrowie jako nie tylko brak choroby czy kalectwa, lecz stan kompletego fizycznego, psychicznego i społecznego dobrostanu. Definicja ta promuje holistyczne podejście do zdrowia pacjenta.

The paper, in the introduction to the above preliminary project description, refers to the UN Agenda 21 (1992) and the Lisbon Initiative (2000) – delineating the situation in Europe and Poland. The growing competition between the main European cities, engaged in massive strengthening their public image through environmental investments and development programmes, which constitutes also a direct challenge to Gdynia. The above situation, the cities’ continuous energy growth consumption as well as the biosphere pollution – requires holistic approaches to the urban and architectural solutions of the area in the SKOK’s possession. In view of the above, the concept proposes the creation of a new centre for Redłowo quarter. A new ‘Gdynia Saloon’ with an extraordinary environment. The new centrum proposes an innovative development through the introduction of new city-creative functions – based on an environmental appraisal of the area, applied environmental psychology – use of the latest technologies from the cutting edge. A new organisation of ‘green’ open and enclosed as well as immaterial spaces – effectively pixel architecture. New urban Saloon concept consists of a dominant SKOK headquarters, accompanied by + 5*lux hotel, a vertical ‘urban village’, a new type of international shopping – Ecomarket 2V and a multifunctional hall/the world’s first virtual theatre, embracing the proposed Franciszek Stefczyk plaza. The above intelligent buildings – with the developed new trends for the headquarter office (incl. photosynthesis, iodisation), hotel, ‘vertical village’, shopping and theatre – will aim to generate adequate energy for the centre with ‘0’ gas emissions, thus striving to achieve the self-sustaining development. The application of the BIM method will lead to the considerable buildings construction and usage savings, as well as to the higher quality of the development. This holistic approach consists of the integration of science, technology and art, will lead not only to the SKOK’s greater success but will also strengthen the city’s public image, thus fulfilling Gdynia’s development strategy. This will also serve as a paradigm for the Polish/ EU cities.

In our article we will present two Eastern European examples of how sociological research on everyday life in the 1970s has been influenced by political and cultural circumstances and particular scientific traditions. From the early 1970s, sociology flourished in some countries of the Eastern Bloc, institutes were refounded, and research projects were heavily subsidised. Research into daily life – the so-called “socialist lifestyle” – was one of the main foci of sociological inquiry. Recently, similar data collections from two such projects were discovered in the archives of academies of sciences in Hungary (HAS) and Poland (PAS). In both cases, we can see that the researchers stand decisively on the side of “high” culture, while taking a normative view of “low” cultural consumption. Even though there was no direct cooperation or interdependence between Hungarian and Polish “lifestyle” researchers, we can observe similar structures of thinking about socialist society. Western influence, mostly implicitly, is also visible.
