This article deals with the significance of value ideals for political and legal thinking.Value ideals are necessary ingredients of any normative thinking but it is not self-evident what role (if any) we should assign to ideals so high that they are infeasible. People have tendency to selfish behaviour (at least in part) due to their human nature but this empirical fact does not diminish the moral wrongness of selfish behaviour. Even if human nature was unchangeable, it would be possible and right to criticize selfish behaviour from a moral point of view. In this sense, even an unachievable ideal can become a standard of moral rightness.However, we need to address practical problems of our real world. If a utopian vision abstracts away from facts about the sources of these problems then it cannot provide us useful guidelines for solving them.

Tento článek se zabývá významem hodnotových ideálů pro politické a právní myšlení. Hodnotové ideály jsou nezbytnou součástí každého normativního myšlení, ale není zřejmé, jakou roli (pokud vůbec nějakou) bychom měli připisovat ideálům, které jsou tak vysoké, že nejsou realizovatelné. Lidé mají sklon k sobeckému jednání, což je (alespoň zčásti) důsledkem jejich lidské přirozenosti, ale tento empirický fakt nic nemění na skutečnosti, že sobecké chování je nemorální. I kdyby lidská přirozenost byla nezměnitelná, bylo by možné a správné kritizovat sobecké chování z morálních pozic.V tomto smyslu lze říct, že i nedosažitelný ideál může být standardem morální správnosti. Nicméně, my potřebujeme řešit praktické problémy reálného života. Jestliže nějaká utopická vize odhlíží od faktů ohledně zdrojů těchto problémů, pak není způsobilá nám poskytnout vodítka pro jejich řešení.
