An article presents selected theoretical and empirical aspects of functioning information in social and economical dimensions of contemporary democratic political systems. Quantitative and qualitative levels of analysis were highlighted. New developmental forms of the information society were the object of consideration. Some skills related to the use of information and communication technologies were presented. The labour market’s situation in the digital economy was include in the analysis. Profession of the information broker was used as an empirical example of that situation. Lastly, a sequential model of information broker’s activity was proposed.

W artykule przedstawiono wpływ rozwoju techniki informatycznej na proces gromadzenia, przetwarzania i udostępniania informacji. Omówiony został wpływ cyberprzestrzeni i Internetu na kształtowanie współczesnego sektora informacyjnego. Wyjaśniono terminy broker informacji, infobroker, społeczeństwo informacyjne, szum informacyjny. Przedstawiono krótką historię początków infobrokerstwa. Omówiono najistotniejsze międzynarodowe organizacje i stowarzyszenia związane z infobrokerstwem. W artykule zaprezentowano charakterystykę kompetencji i umiejętności osoby trudniącej się pozyskiwaniem informacji. Opisano ofertę edukacyjną polskich uczelni kształcących przyszłych brokerów informacji.

The article presents the impact of the development of information technology for the collection, processing and sharing of information. The impact of cyberspace and the Internet on the development of modern information sector is discussed. The following terms are explained: information broker, infobroker, the information society, information noise. A brief history of the origins of information retrieval is presented, and the most important international organizations and associations related to information retrieval are discussed. The article presents the characteristics of the competencies and skills required in persons engaged in acquiring information. The educational offer of Polish universities educating future information brokers is also described.
