In my article I discuss the concept of the subject from the Lacanian psychoanalysis point of view. My aim is to show that the subject seen from such a perspective is condemned to total loneliness. I refer to three different points: otherness, comprehension and love. In Lacan’s psychoanalysis the difference is referred to as the Real (subject as je). The Real is in opposition to the Symbolic and Imaginary (subject as moi). Therefore, the world, other people and oneself can be understood as absolutely different. Taking such a definition of the otherness, the comprehension is impossible, because it takes place within symbolic sphere, which is false and alien to the subject (je). The otherness and inability of understanding determine treating love as transferred and always directed to imaginary subject. What is important, the theory of the subject as homo symbolicus, even though seemingly in agreement with anti-positivist theory, does not allow to cross lingual and to direct approaching to the otherness. The otherness may be deciphered only within the Imaginary as a disturbance within it, as a temporary lack of sense.
In this article I present some basic modes of “domestication” of the religious otherness – “idolatrous” polytheism, in this case – in the conquest of the New World. Selected examples: Cortés, Bernal Díaz del Castillo, José de Acosta and Bartolomé de Las Casas, were used in order to determine the key patterns of capturing the indigenous religions, starting from appropriating the other, then establishing of radical difference and finally its denial – not through assimilation but through discovering the inner foreigness. I use the notion of “extraordinariness” (Le Goff) as the main analytical category. My theoretical perspective is Wolfgang Welsch’s proposal to reject the ‘old’ way of thinking in the terms of own – foreign and replace it with the opposition of close – distant.

Contemporary dimension of religious, socio-cultural situation in Europe implies the need for the positive perception of the persons of different faiths. The perception of the religious otherness as a value may (through mutual exchange and synthesis of spiritual values intrinsic for whole Christian community and encounter with positive values of other religions) enrich religious identity with the aspect of openness.Young people tirelessly search for their own identity and, thus, confirm the need for religious education which enhances the formation of religious identity. Tasks of school religious education in the context of forming the open religious identity comprise both acquiring knowledge about one’s own religion and church, religious formation and also the knowledge about religious pluralism; the perception of the religiously other as the value; reflexive approach to religious questions and the development of positive attitudes toward the religious otherness. The author attempts to find the answer to the question whether and to what extent the religious education enhances the creation of open religious identity of young people.

Współczesny wymiar religijny rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturowej Europy implikuje potrzebę pozytywnego postrzegania osób/grup odmiennych religijnie. Postrzeganie Inności religijnej jako wartości może – poprzez wzajemną wymianę i scalanie wartości duchowych będących wspólnym dobrem chrześcijaństwa, a w kontekście różnych religii poprzez mediację między wartościami chrześcijańskimi i pozytywnymi wartościami innych religii – wzbogacać tożsamość religijną o aspekt otwartości.Młodzi ludzie usilnie poszukują własnej tożsamości, stąd edukacja religijna młodzieży powinna stymulować kształtowanie tożsamości religijnej. Zadania edukacji religijnej w kontekście kształtowania otwartej tożsamości religijnej obejmują zarówno nabywanie wiedzy o własnej religii i Kościele, formację religijną, jak i wiedzę na temat pluralizmu religijnego, postrzeganie zróżnicowania religijnego jako wartości, refleksyjne podejście do kwestii religijnych i rozwijanie pozytywnych postaw wobec Inności religijnej. Autorka stawia pytanie: czy i w jakim stopniu szkolna edukacja religijna wspomaga kształtowanie otwartej tożsamości religijnej młodzieży.
The article reviews the posthumanistic concepts of moving beyond anthropocentrism. They are presented in the context of deliberations on non-human animals and human-animal relationship. Posthumanism criticizes primarily the humanistic category of a “human”. As Rosi Braidotti notices, it does not perform the descriptive function, but mostly serves to stigmatize the different, non-human. The consequence of such assumption is the postulate to extend the field of humanistic thoughts. The point is not to abandon a topic of a human, but to attempt to develop tools to describe non-human “otherness”.
The author examines repeated in the texts of popular culture theme of monsters of varying shapes. She argues that their monstrosity is not about frightening appearance, but about the loss of form. The examples of monsters presented are involved in the same kind of monstrosity related to inability to control the chaotic matter by form. The author uses this definition of monstrosity and the concept of formlessness derived from Georges Bataille’s heterology to prove that monstrosity is not a feature or a motif, but an operation.
The author, in his paper, pays close attention to the uncontrolled dialectics ofdeath within human existence; that which is actively experienced but passivelysustained; is the end of everything but the beginning of something new; is absolutecertainty but unpredictable uncertainty; is always and only personal for me but always and only personal for others, too. In fact, it is very difficult to explain themeaning of death from an ontological study of death: if and how death exists in thearea of human experience; if death is an immanent possibility for personal existenceor, is it introduced from outwith and occurs when we are not still living. To respondto these questions, the author proposes to use the bridging term, with which variousphilosophical positions can be qualified. This bridging term is ‘distance’ and ourdeath experience is defined as the distance between man (person acting) and hissubject (experience). The dialectical nature of this experience implies that deathmight be through an infinite separation or an infinite closeness to man. Driftingbetween those faraway shores, we can find in Emmanuel Levinas’ philosophy. Herefers to death as Other (something else for man), but this does not mean that deathis strange or unknown within one’s life experience.
Marię Poprzęcką: W jakim stopniu historia sztuki współtworzyła potężną strukturę dominacji kulturalnej i intelektualno-artystycznej władzy, co znalazło swoją instytucjonalną i materialną formę w muzeach powstających we wszystkich zakątkach świata.
The article concerns the presence of the figures of the Other in textbooks for teaching Polish at the second stage of education. The work explains the theoretical foundations and sources in speaking about otherness, includes an analysis of the fundamental components that define someone as not-mine, and in the empirical part I analyze the content of the texts on the basis of the defined criteria of confrontation. The work can be of benefit to researchers of the didactics of Polish language and literature, and it can also be helpful in planning Polish language classes about the Other.

Urzeczywistnienie grekokatolicyzmu w Polsce, zwłaszcza w ostatnim ponadpółwieczu, przyjmowało dosyć różnorodną formę i zakres.

Next membership in determined community, being real reflecting the baptismal nude, is supposed also to support tightening bonds between different options religious. Today it is possible to talk about the fact that in Poland since the certain time a completely different model already started prevailing of inside Catholic and inside Christian relations.

Being different means being different from the community to which I belong and that sets the perfect patterns of being and living. Sometimes it also means exclusion from the category of beings regarded as human or “the most human”. While such situations occur in cultures of indigenous peoples from the Amazon, the category of humanity happens to be fluid there. A human being can become an animal, and vice versa. Using selected examples from the Amazon the article outlines dimensions attributed to the other and social consequences that may result from them. It also points to the contribution of white aggressor sin shaping indigenous relationship towards the other.
Xięga poezji idyllicznej, along with the letters of Maria Komornicka show the tragic discord between the optimistic approval of an idealized reality and the heroic struggle for respect of the rights to diversity. The aim of this study was to re-read the poetry and biography of Komornicka in the context of the metaphysical project of the affirmation of otherness, which shows an alternative reality. The work of Komornicka-Włast has been accepted as a unique testimony of courage – a crippled demiurge is allowed to praise the work of God, and a mentally exhausted, humiliated woman can be just a man.

Xięga poezji idyllicznej wraz z listami Marii Komornickiej ukazują tragiczny rozdźwięk pomiędzy optymistyczną aprobatą idealizowanej rzeczywistości (w wyobrażeniach poetyckich) a heroiczną walką o poszanowanie praw do godności i odmienności (w korespondencji do rodziny i przyjaciół).
This paper engages with the question of the ethical implications of, and artistic imagination in picturebooks. The analysis relies on two visual narratives confronting the theme of cultural difference. The juxtaposition of the two books that share the themes of visiting and hosting, of confronting otherness, and of cultural prejudice indicates differences in their narrative and artistic potential. The analysis of formal strategies in Jemmy Button by Jennifer Uman and Valerio Vidali and in Eric by Shaun Tan serves to point out the role of artistic imagination and narrative wisdom in creating visual literature
The present paper attempts to investigate the developement of existential competence within the framework of the intercultural approach to foreign language teaching. The main dimension of this approach to be explored is the application of the semantic analysis of key words for each culture designating values. To better understand the theoretical background of the intercultural competence its main aspects will be analyzed, i.e. alterity, representation, and identity. The analysis will especially include the process of discovering the real meaning of wordswithin their cultural background. Such a reflective approach to teaching and learning foreign languages allows the students to change their ethical attitude towards foreign cultures as well as their own culture.
The purpose of this article is to pay close attention to two important phenomena which could be related. The first one is the individuation – becoming a person as well as being oneself. The second is antipathy towards otherness and diversity. In reference to both phenomena, the following research question is raised: could antipathy towards otherness be an expression of one’s own fear of becoming an individual? Being an authentic, autonomic and responsible person – being oneself – is indeed a challenge, especially for young people. Creation of a certain attitude towards other people is accompanied by raising consciousness of one’s own being a separate person. Therefore, it is worth conducting some research on how one’s “becoming a person” (while functioning in a certain social context) may affect forming individual attitudes towards otherness. In the undertaken research, an individualistic perspective is used, consisting in the person-centered approach and selected existential principles.

This article is located within the field of culture studies, which is understood here as describing the values and feelings manifested in various human creations. The author analyses a culture whose core is the cultivation of otherness. As sources, the author primarily uses anti-gender publications, complemented by reflection on the philosophy of Slavoj Žižek and the Polish reception of queer theory. The author advances the thesis that the high rank accorded to the same–other pair is to some extent a common feature of both the anti-gender side (male–female) and the queer side (system–non-normativity).

Nathalie Sarraute (1900-1999) was born in Russia but she lived in France. She was a writer, a woman of immense erudition, and a polyglot whose works show the experience of a tragic ‘Me’ fighting against ‘the Other’. The consequences of the childhood spent abroad, far from her grandparents whom she loved very much; the holidays spent in Russia; her expectation of the promised meeting with her mother; her being defenceless against her stepmother; finally, the awareness that her strange surroundings was a threat: all these factors made her censor her own words and understand the importance of contact with the Other. This painful experience of childhood and living at the crossing of cultures, became a very rich and interesting literary substance expressed through so-called tropisms. From her first work to the last one, the author’s most important aim is to deal with the mechanisms that generate concrete statements, like pre-dialogue or under-conversation; she is interested with all kinds of reflective activity caused by the fear of an unwanted reaction to what we say.
The article proposes to look at the “character” through the humanistically defined categories of games and play and the genological category of characteristics. Since a literary game is a special type of interaction between the creator of a work and its recipients based on curiosity or pleasure, it was assumed that among all the elements of the game with which the author influences the reader's interest, the character plays a key role. Each encounter with a character in the experience of reading changes the "character" of the experiencing person, and such an ambiguous understanding of the noun "character" may signal its use in a substantial sense, close to the shape and, at the same time, the essence of something. This, in turn, gives the opportunity to look at the game with the "character" in Polish lessons as a game with the protean genological shape of the character's characterization. Therefore, four possible formulas, anthropo-cognitive strategies have been proposed - figures of the game with the genre and the hero: 1) Immersion in the character, 2) Trying on the character's costume, 3) A special relationship with the hero, 4) Mirror of oneself. All of these "individual stagings of otherness" are immersed in a category particularly predestined to combine all directions of acquiring "knowledge about oneself and a person" during Polish lessons - empathy, defined by Elżbieta Mikoś as "a special emotional resonance".

Każde spotkanie z postacią w doświadczeniu lektury zmienia jednocześnie „postać” doświadczającego, a takie dwuznaczne rozumienie rzeczownika „postać” sygnalizować może użycie go w znaczeniu substancjalnym, zbliżonym do kształtu i zarazem istoty czegoś. W związku z tym zaproponowano cztery możliwe formuły, strategie antropopoznawcze – f i g u r y gry z gatunkiem i bohaterem: 1) zanurzenie w postaci, 2) przymierzanie kostiumu postaci, 3) szczególny związek z bohaterem, 4) lustro samego siebie.
The aim of the article is to reflect on the directions of work on taming otherness in the activities of artists and theatre pedagogues from the Theatre 21. We present a model of integration of otherness through theatre art, which aims to remove barriers of inclusion and break the social isolation that separates people with disabilities from the society. At the same time, this model makes it possible to use new protective forms whose main function is to secure the participants of the interaction with the Other. In the article, we present the methods and tools used in the educational work of the Theatre 21 and we reflect on the effects of their application in the processes of changing attitudes towards disability. The empirical basis of the article consists of the conclusions drawn from the research carried out during the evaluation of the ‘O!Swój Theatre 21’ project in 2017-2018. The artistic and educational activity of the Theatre 21, created mostly by actors with Down syndrome, focuses on supporting the processes of the socio-cultural integration of people with disabilities. However, the discussed model of taming this particular otherness, developed by the Theatre 21 group, is quite universal and, in our opinion, can be applied for working with different dimensions of otherness.

For years deaf people have been assigned to a group, to which the name of the „foreign” group could be given, to which people felt and it happens that they still feel some prejudices and create certain stereotypes. Creating this type of social myths is linked to the scarcity of knowledge that society has. A man is often not able to explain certain situations, facts that overwhelm him, therefore he looks for solutions to his thoughts by creating his own opinions, which often turn into myths with time. Many disabled people struggle for social position, to which they are entitled, just like every human beeing. Deaf people who have trouble communicating their thoughts, emotions – simply – using language, transfer them to their recipients in a different way to be understood, appreciated and equal in society. „Fighting” is their creation.

After the Second World War, Paul Ric œ ur started his career teaching philosophy at the Col- lège Cévenol in the village of Chambon-sur-Lignon, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation dedicated to the phenomenological analysis of the voluntary and the involuntary. Borrowed from Milan Kundera, the paradoxical notion of ‘wisdom of uncertainty’, applied to Ricoeur’s work as a whole, highlights the specific features of his contribution to the development of hermeneutic philosophy in the 20 th century
